Mother Earth -- Our Only Hope For The Future

With the threat of global warming, the future of the Earth is very much in question. Whether you say you believe -- or do not believe -- in global warming, let me just say that you most likely do, just not the reasons behind it. There is plenty of evidence to back the fact that our earth is warming. The real question is whether you believe it is manmade or a naturally occurring phenomenon. With that is also the question of whether global warming is long term or short term.
This is a real political hot button. It seems like global warming is divided straight down the partisan line. I feel by being particularly partisan, a writer alienates the very readers that he or she wants to reach, so let us look at it from a different angle.
I am not a scientist, so I can not say with any sort of conviction that global warming as caused by humans -- and something we have the power to change -- is real. I also can not say with any sort of conviction that it is not caused by humans. What I can say is that there is plenty of evidence that we are polluting our earth at an alarming rate. Anyone who disagrees with that just can’t be reached. They are already in outer space. Earth to idiot, earth to idiot….
A Bright Side to the Global Warming Issue?
If there is a bright side to such a dire issue as global warming, it is this: more people are aware of how their actions affect the world around them. However, the very best turn of events is that more people are putting pressure on our government to research alternative fuel sources. Of course, the all too recent spike of over $4.00 for a gallon of gas had many people on both sides of the spectrum speaking out anyway. I now see that the price of gasoline is slowly inching back up. How long before it is back to $4.00 a gallon?
Alternative fuel sources would solve a lot of problems that we have. Right now, the bulk of our energy money goes straight to the Middle East. What would happen if we cut off their major source of cash flow and oil became obsolete? Would al-Qaeda have the money to continue waging their jihad? They may not go totally broke, but, it is likely that their funds would be greatly diminished.
Other issues are also a great threat to the earth and our way of life. The biggest one that I can think of is a suicide bomber with access to nuclear weapons….bring on the virgins! Over-population, lack of food, pandemics….all of these and more are a threat to us and our way of life.
The Earth Rejuvenates Itself
What would happen to the earth if humans destroyed it through their own actions? Humans might disappear, but the earth, as long as there is a sun to warm it, will likely rebound the same way it always has. The earth has natural mechanisms to rejuvenate itself. For instance, water filters the pollutants out naturally through rocks and sediment. Trees and plants help the earth by filtering the air to remove pollutants.
The earth has been through many cycles of warming and cooling. If all life on earth were destroyed, amoebas would likely evolve again into some sort of life, maybe just not life the way we currently know it. The earth is a miraculous thing. It is a thing of beauty and awe. Our world is not something to be taken for granted. If we start to take good care of it, we -- and our descendants -- just might be around to enjoy it.

We are responsible for much of the mess we are, and I agree with your basic idea. The 1st world as we call it here in Spain, the Industrialized nations, need to take responsibility and do better than we are doing to help clean up the mess we have made as well as to find ways of making our entire future on Earth cleaner and renewable.

Connie, I don't get the people who want to fight the idea of global warming. Even if it does not exist, it only makes sense to cut our use of fossil fuel, and generally clean the earth up - it will improve the environment and create jobs.
You are absolutely right, Delores. Even close friends of mine argue against this issue. I maintain that this is not really a political arguement, except that goverment has to take stronger action to protect our environment. You are right that it comes down more to common sense in that taking the needed steps to clean up our environment is going to serve us better in the long run.
so well said sister.. i wonder if we will ever stop trying to control mother earth, and if we'll ever respect her enough to treat her with the respect she deserves.. so sad to see so many treat our only home as if it is something to be "used". not cool.

The earth has gone through many climate cycles. Global warming may or may not exist. We need to stop poisoning the earth. Who really pollutes the upper atmosphere? Not cars but thousands of airplanes. Al gore is quiet on that subject.
I was taught recycling from early childhood on and I'm still doing it. That helps a lot.
Interesting point you make there Connie, about the Middle East and what would happen if oil were to become obsolete. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Not "sweet" Sabu, true. I had to agree with another commenter on that site. It is the best article that I have read anywhere on the subject.
I am always curious as to why humans think they don't affect the earth and global warming. We see trees beside highways struggling to exist and watch fish wrapped in nets die on shorelines. We watch our friends and neighbors die of secondary smoke inhalation. Birds and bees disappear, cities have noxious clouds hanging over them for days. What is there not to get? Thanks for the hub. Made me think.
Thank you for reading it, Storyteller. I also wonder what there is not to get, but I do get it. It does not mesh with our capitalistic ways of putting profits before all else. I certainly am not against capitalism, which has, to now, worked well for America, yet our Earth cannot sustain continued growth and expansion at all costs.
Hi Connie, I found your hug through Ralph Deeds. You know, finally the cat is out of the bag and almost everyone accepts that global warming is a reality. I remember when the issue was considered so fringe, most people denied it was happening. I read Al Gore's book when it first came out, Earth in the Balance. I thought it was brilliant. He compared the way we view the earth and our denial about the negative impact we are having upon it to the way a dis- functional family goes into denial! Thanks for talking about this issue.

Thank you for your great hub. It is important to start to care about the environment before it is too late and most importantly make people aware of this problem. I have just read a great book: 'We Are The Weather Makers' by the Australian Scientist Tim Flannery. In his passionate book Tim speaks about cyclons and droughts, about coral reefs and polar bears, about wind energy and nuclear power. he reminds us that climate connects us all, from the Arctic to the Outback. And our climate is influenced by how we choose to live-how we use our fuels, our water and our land.
