A Bilingual Book

There's something else special about this book, too: It's one of Tulika's Bilingual Picture Books.

India speaks many languages, and every Indian child is exposed to atleast two languages. These books provide an opportunity for the young reader to learn one language through another.

Each line of text is in English and another Indian language. The book is available in:

English-Hindi

English-Tamil

English-Malayalam

English-Kannada

English-Telugu

English-Marathi

English-Gujarati

A special book of moving images

Grandma's Eyes is a warm and funny picture book for children of two years and above. The author, Sandhya Rao, meant to celebrate the special relationship each child has with its grandmother. I had about 20, because when I was a kid, not content with my real two, I used to borrow other people's grandmothers, too!

There are only twelves lines of simple text that celebrates the essence of the special relationship. When I started illustrating for this book, I did all kinds of styles and treatments, but neither the editors at Tulika Publishers nor I could achieve anything satisfactory. Children deserve the best, so we kept brainstorming.

While at it, I was struck by a bolt of memory! When I was ten, I used to tear out the sheets of my notebooks to make 'moving pictures.' I used the same idea for Grandma's Eyes, made her eyes blink happily. The editors fell in love with the idea, and I drew the book in a day!

I hope every child who's delighted with the moving grandma will try this out herself, and have written a hub on my secret method, too!

The publishers told me that many adults liked flipping and flapping the pages merrily to watch the pictures move. So it delights kids of 40, too!

Kenny: What a beautiful talent you have! I am thrilled to be in this community, its gets one's creative juices going sorrounded by so many talented folks. The idea of movable eyes is one that must have brought the book to life. BDW, your middle name is Omar? My late 18 year old nephew was Omar Subhi Hammad, half Arab on his Dad's side... and was named after Omar Shariff, the actor.

I will be sure to purchase your books, if I come across a child I can gift them with as I often like to purchase gifts from talented artists or writers with good energy such as yours.

Dear Violet, welcome to my hubs and to hubpages! It's a great community, isn't it? Talent, and a lot of love is shared here!

No, no, my middle name isn't Omar, that's Zsuzsy Bee's joke;

she thought I looked like Omar Shariff in my last profile picture! lol!

I like him very much, though!

Thanks for saying that you like my books enough to want to gift it to a child.

My talent is available to be shared,

and one by one, I'm going to share all

the tricks of my craft with everybody here.

Thanks, Violet, and I look forward to reading your After Death hub.

The hub interface is delightful, isn't it? I am quite addicted!

BTW, it was not Zsuzsy, God bless her, who said I looked like Shariff.

It was Earth Angel, God bless her too!

Hey thanks, Gemma, for stopping! :)

But being a nan of 2 children is not a selfish activity, so you are not that! Not selfish, I mean, not 'not nan'!

Kenny, I'm so glad you celebrate Grandmas! I am a grandma and have such fun stealing kisses from my little ones. Grandkids are so innocent and pure and fresh to the world. Their wonder at simple things is a delightful reminder of the true value of things like frogs and jumping, trampolines and water slides, and flowers, and ... Dora. Whenever I need to take a break I think about the little children and the times we've spent together. It brings me a renewed sense of Life (with a capital L) and puts a big smile on my face.

Thank you so much, Kenny, for your delightful approach to Grandmas.
