My Ten Places To Be In Canada
94Canada and Places In It I Love
I love in Canada, and have traveled to most of the provinces of Canada, so I'll try to narrow down some of my more favorite cities and why I love them. In no particular order, as I really don't have a true primary favorite.
Vancouver:
The largest city in the Western part of the country, it is close to the Pacific Ocean and the weather is mild, and for the most part it is a busy place. There is plenty of walking trails and parks. The sites are great.
The more interesting thing that will happen to this city will be the Olympics on 2010. There was an Expo in 1986 which helped the economy and developed an area many though couldn't be developed. There is also an annual fair known as the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) great fun to had by all. For the more historical minded there are many older buildings and sites people can go and see.
This city is one I love partly because of the climate and partly because I live there!
Kitchener Waterloo:
A smaller sized city close to Toronto and like Vancouver, holds a lot of history and a center of education. These two cities boast not one but two universities, and a college. The winters are not mild, they get a lot of snow, and ice, but there are many things to do in the area.
Fun Fact: Kitchener was once called Berlin, due to the high number of ethinic Germans living in the area. During World War I it was changed from Berlin to Kitchener, to show loyalty to the Canadian government.
I love it for the history and every time i go to Ontario I tend to stop there for a few days.
Edmonton:
A northern city with plenty of history and many things to do. If you go there, the Hotel MacDonald is a site to see. The downtown core has plenty to see and Edmonton does have a number of Colleges and a Large university.
For the more sport minded person, Edmonton was known as "city of Champions" for a time with their Hockey team and football team both winning numerous championships. ( Hockey Five Stanley Cups. and Countless in Football.. sorry not sure of the number in the CFL, can someone help with that?) There are so many things to do in winter and summer. Fort Edmonton is a must for any history lover.
Calgary:
The Calgary Stampede. Enough said. This even is held yearly and is a lot of fun to see the horses and cattle.
There is many sites and the transit system is grand, it run fast and effectively. In 1988 there was the Calgary Olympics, of which the movie: Cool Runnings is based on. The winters are lovely, but not the hot and cold spells during the spring. Still there is a lot to do, and many sites to see. The revolving restaurant is great to go to. A must.
Victoria:
The city on the island. This is one of the most westerly cities of Canada, A very nice capital city, and named after a Queen. The Parliament building is a great place to visit. The climate is perfect and there is both old and new Victoria side by side.
Toronto.
CN Tower. Canada's largest city. Bloor Street Shopping. The Canadian National Exhibition. Ontario Place. The many Universities. The History, once a capital of Upper Canada. Hundreds of sites to see and things to do.
Enjoy the shopping or take in a hockey or baseball game, or even a basketball game. There are things for every sports fan.
I love the vibrancy and movement in this city.
Montreal:
You'll need to speak French, but the language makes the city, The Eastern island city is a wonderful piece of history and tradition and a great place to view the river surrounding it.
I love the ability to go to the city and speak another language and yet, still be within Canada. The city has a wonderful hockey team who has been there for more than a century. The Montreal Canadiens. ( this is the French version of Canadian.)
Charlottetown:
This is a historical city and yet, it is also the place where much is changing and yet remains the same. A city on a island. Prince Edward Island to be exact. Named after a son of King George III. ( Or so the story goes.)
This is mentioned in Anne of Green gables and its series. This is a lovely city in Summer and a Wonderful place in winter.
Winnipeg:
Three Words For you: The Guess Who. Love that rock band. some great talent has come from this city. There are thousands of lakes in the area. It's great for fishing.
Last but not least....(it might also be my favorite!... you never know)
Ottawa:
For the History lover, this is Bytown. The city is the capital of Canada. It was chosen as such by Queen Victoria. Toronto to close to the United States border, and Montreal would anger the Upper Canadians... so off North to Bytown it was. The newly renamed Ottawa is home to royalty and government.
This is a wonderful city to visit, but be advised to do so outside of sessions of Parliament, easier to be able to view the city.
There you have it my top ten, there are others, but these are the ones I love and a reason or two why I love them.
NB: This is my first travel and places hub, so hope you enjoy it!

Those pictures of Canada are fantastic,I never knew a whole city spoke French in Canada, that's news to me!Great hub Rebecca E!
We visited many of the places you mention and our best friends are Canadians. Our favorite places in Canada are the wilderness areas of northwestern Ontario and northeastern Manitoba. We go every year and love the unspoiled beauty. Thanks for hub.
Throw quebec on there! i love that city!
P.S : love the hub and the pics!
yep all of these top my list as well, but since I haven't been to Quebec city more than once, well I can't say much about it =) It is a lovely city and I'd go back right away!
I truly believe that Canada is one of the most beautiful countries on earth. I actually got a residency after I got one for Australia and having gone to school here and made friends and being closer to my birth country of Malaysia, I chose Australia. Vancouver is a great city if it only rained a little less :) Thanks for sharing.
Very good information. Many thanks
I hope you all enjoyed it, and awsydney you are correct.
Kitchener??? Really? I disagree.
Kitchener is where most of my family is. Kinda cool place to be =)
love the country my mother was born in winnpeg bbest person I ever knew to be child of God great hub mike
I love Quebec City. But Montreal is by far the best city in Canada to visit - just don't want to live there anymore. Too much politics. You can scratch Toronto off that list for sure though. Terrible place.
I must admit, of all of these cities, Toronto had been the least popular.
Very interesting. Canada has indeed some cities I would be interested in to visit. From a distance my personal choice would be Vancouver - just for being to near to great mountains :).
You've done a good job with these Canadian cities. I like your comments on Vancouver very much. My favorite Canadian city is La Ville de Quebec. Halifax is pretty nice too
Halifax I've never been to but anyone who has what do you think?
I love Montreal. I just came back from there. The people there give you everything you could get in France but without the snobbishness. I found the Quebecois to be very nice though the media paints them as raving lunatics.
Besides Montreal I am also a big fan of Vancouver. Its a beautiful city and it has the best temperature out of all the big Canadian cities.
montreal is my most favorite city, by far, I really wish i'd lived there for while.
Good Hub, just one question: How come my hometown of Port Colborne, Ontario did not make the list? :>)
No Banff on the list????????
Port Colburn and Banff will be on the next list...
Ah, this makes me want to visit even more! I've never been, and these provide a good place to start. There seems to be something for everyone, from the sports nut to the music lover to the history buff...
WHAT? Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is not on your list!!!
My husband is from Toronto so I've been there a couple of times - been to Kitchener/Waterloo as well. Also Niagra Falls and Regina. We honeymooned in Mountain View, Alberta. I would love to travel to the Northwest Territories someday. Would also love to go to the Calgary Stampede. Great hub!
you know i've never been to Mosse Jaw, ut I hear it's a pretty cool place =)
I like Vancouver a lot. One place I really want to go in Banff. I hear that it is beautiful there!
Vancouver is my favourite place in Canada, I've only been to Calgary, Vancouver Toronto and Montreal but Van is amazing.
Excellent hub. I love the country and have lived in many places but really love the Ponoka area of Alberta and the area around Langley in BC. Would really want to spend more time in the Maritimes some day!
I added St. John's as a place people NEED to go and experience. Growing up in Newfoundland and going back when I can, it has a hold on me.
I now live in Halifax. A younger looking version of St. John's, though a little more fast paced. Its pretty and more refined (in design, and in lanscape), but people (ahem) are not as friendly as they are in St. John's.
I loved Ottawa when I was there. It's a bigger version of Halifax with lots of things to do.
My time in Quebec City (I was 18) was the best I ever had away from home - mind you 6 weeks is a great vacation, but, I don;t know what its like to live there. I disagree with your assessment that you NEED to know French to get around in Montreal - 60% of the population are Anglephone. But I have heard many a depiction in the way you have described, so maybe its something that depends on the day?
Okay now must write out the top 10 list for places I need to go!
I love Canada. My family used to vacation in Ontario every summer, but I never been out west. Not yet anyway. Thanks
I just read your hub. I dream also of living there. My brother and his family lives in Winnipeg. Nice to know more about the place.
Good informative Hub! Thanks.
