Navel Ring

One of the most popular piercings in today's youth and young adult population- is the navel piercing, also known as the belly button piercing.

The standard navel piercing is through the upper ridge of the navel. Sometimes the navel piercing is through the lower ridge or the left and right ridges of the navel.

Although, history portrays variously decorated belly buttons and stomachs, there is no direct history related to the navel piercing. Today, it is solely a decorative piercing, mostly in the female population.

The body is prone to reject a navel piercing, but with proper care and healing methods, one could successfully heal a belly button piercing.

Many people see the navel piercing as a type of surface piercing, but it is not. Navel piercings are pierced on a curve, versus a flat plane. They are much easier to heal than surface piercings, and they are less likely to reject. Now, that does not mean that your body will not reject a navel piercing, but they are less likely to in comparison to a surface piercing.

And, on that note, many people will get reverse navel piercings which is nothing more than a horizontal piercing, usually below the navel. This is a surface piercing, and will be much harder to heal than the average belly button piercing.

Healing Belly Button Piercings

The navel piercing is relatively simple to heal. In some cases, depending on how a person sleeps, it can be a harder case to deal with.

It is preferable that one sleeps on his/her back while healing a navel piercing.

You should clean it once or twice a day with saline, or a sea salt solution. Put enough saline in a small, disposable cup so that when you lay down, the piercing will be fully covered. Let the piercing soak for 10 to 15 minutes before removing the cup.

In the shower, you can clean the jewelry and the area around the piercing with a mild soap. Gently push the jewelry through the piercing, cleaning the piercing with the soap. Make sure to get all the soap from around the piercing. Leaving soap in a wound, as a piercing is essentially a wound, can cause more irritation.

Navel Piercing Placement

Upper: The upper navel piercing, is the standard piercing, in which the jewelry is placed through the upper ridge above the belly button.

Lower: The lower ridge, directly below the belly button is pierced. Sometimes piercers will choose not to pierce the upper ridge, for anatomical reasons.

Sides: For decorative purposes, people may choose to have the sides (left and/right) of their belly button pierced. This cannot be performed on all people.

Reverse: The reverse navel piercing is a surface piercing below the belly button. The surface bar is placed horizontal versus the standard vertical piercing.

Belly Button Jewelry

Banana Barbell: The most common jewelry used in a navel piercing. The barbell is a slightly curved barbell with a ball on either side. The banana barbell can come with UV balls, metal, acrylic, logo, and patterns balls, as well as dangly fixtures.

Twister Barbells: Essentially, a twister barbell is a barbell that is twisted. Decorative balls can be placed on this particular barbell as well.

Captive Bead Ring (CBR):Sometimes people will wear CBR's in their navel piercing. This can cause a little pressure on the piercing itself.

Today, there are various forms of the above mentioned jewelry pieces. There are banana barbels with dangly attachments for aesthetic appeal. Some banana barbells can be found with logo balls, as well as glow in the dark balls, and other brightly colored acrylic and metal balls.

Sometimes piercing through scar tissue can cause longer healing, but that is not always the case. It is pretty much an individual basis.

Yes, sleeping on your stomach will increase risk of complications, and you should really try to sleep on your back or side while healing the piercing. The eye patch will potentially benefit you if you must sleep on your stomach, just be careful if it moves or you jerk and move the eye patch that it doesn't snatch the jewelry.

Very diluted sea salt is fine to use. I'm not sure about the emu oil. Just stick with sea salt or saline solution.

Hi Whitney!

I just recently had my naval re-pierced (Oct 31st) and all seems well so far (of course, only 9 days in). Previously, I had my naval piercing in for 9 months but it slowly rejected (I had it removed before it grew all of the way out). I waited 16 months before repiercing it. I obviously have scar tissue. How does this affect the healing of my new piercing? I was told that the scar tissue could possibly make the healing process take longer this time. Do you agree? One other thing. I understand that sleeping on your stomach could increase the chance of infection, rejection, migration, etc (I did not take this into consideration with my last piercing, I would wake up with it irritated). I constantly sleep on my stomach and toss/turn. Do you have any suggestions? I know that you are not supposed to use bandaids to cover your piercing because it needs to breath. I've been putting an eye patch on my naval for when I sleep at night and it seems to keep everything comfortable(I do sleep with t-shirts on). I don't wake up with irritation like I did with my first piercing. I am also using the sea salt soak twice a day and applying emu oil(not sure if that's the correct spelling) twice daily. Sorry for the novel, I just want to do it correct this time and give my piercing the best chance of "surviving".

Thanks =)

If it's green pus and not lymph, then it's infected. Keep cleaning it. If it gets worse, you may have to see a doctor for an antibiotic. You can apply a teeny tiny dab of antibiotic ointment or cream, like Neosporin on the jewelry, carefully push it through the piercing, and gently wipe away the excess using a q-tip.

It usually doesn't take too long, but in general how long it will take to close up will depend on your body. It may take a few months or so.

Rehanah  says:

i just touch it to see if it hurts . and yes i do clean it everyday when i take a shower .

oh and it doesnt hurt anymore . i stopped touching it and it doesnt hurt at all .

how long will it take for it to be completely closed and how will i know that its closed ? can i go swimming or smth ?

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Rehanah, Why are you touching it? You could be irritating it. Did you continues cleaning it after taking out he jewelry, so to keep the area clean while closing up?

Karen, it's probably not an infection unless you've got dark yellow-greenish pus coming out. It's probalby just irritated and still healing.

Melissa, It's just migrating. There's not much you can do. Unless it was just pieced crooked; and in that case there's still nothing you can really do. Is the top crooked or just the bottome crooked? How exactly is it sitting?

Rubbing alcohol will dry out the piercing and can cause severe irritation. Saline is naturally occurring in your body and it won't cause any irritation. If a piercer told your friend to use rubbing alcohol, you never want to go to him again; no piercer who knows what he's doing and talking about would ever recommend it.

I'm not able to pull up the site from work. Does the piercing look like the second one posted above? If so it's just a standard piercing- just on the bottom. All navel piercings that are on the navel are standard- top, bottom, left, or right.

Thats the type i mean when I say inverse. so I'm guessing it's simply a reversed piercing? Or a lower belly button piercing? I know you say Saline is best, but whats the difference in using Saline compared to rubbing Alcohol? Sorry if thats a silly question, but, I'm curious as my friend just got a standard belly button piercing done and the man who did it told her to use the rubbing alch.?

Thanks for the help thus far. It's been much appreciated! =)

As long as your clothes cover up the new piercing, the dust shouldn't bother it, but that doesn't mean to put a bandage on it. Just make sure your clothes cover it, but aren't tight. By inverse, do you mean a bottom belly button or a surface piercing that goes horizontal underneath the navel?

Tight clothes are not optimum for a navel piercing. The dust isn't good, but if you can get clothes that cover them, it won't be as bad.

If you mean just right for you in the sense of top or bottom navel? It will depend on how yours is shaped.

Hi Whitney : )

I'm considering getting a piercing done soon. I’m 17 and haven't been to a piercing pr tattoo shop before (don't even have my ears done). Is there something I can do to prepare for a piercing? How can you tell which one is 'just right' for you?

Also, I'm a horse trainer. I do many hours of work each day down at the barn, so I’m always around dust, or wearing slightly tight clothes during a show. I had been thinking of getting an inverse navel piercing.. But, with current conditions it wouldn't be too smart, would it? Or would it be okay to get even though i work around horses? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Some of the reverse jewelry you could use, but for the most part there's no reason to because they are extremely heavy and can easily cause migration and/or irritation due to the weight.

Skai  says:

I was just wondering, if I have a regular belly button piercing on the top of my navel, that means that I can't use reverse jewelry, correct?

I'm not sure what it is, but it's not bad. It's like when you have your ears pierced, and you can sometimes push solid discharge out of it. I believe it's something like that, although I'm not 100% sure.

I got my belly button done Last year in Jan. for my birthday. I got into some trouble & it was taken out by my mom That June.. Its been awhile and it has the skin tone type of scar on the top. I noticed the other day when I squeezed it- white stuff came out of it.. it wasn't running like puss- it was more like a noodle (stuck together in the form of a noodle)

Whats this caused by?? is that normal after servel months of healing??

It's still soap. Like I already said, using any type of soap is going to give you high risk of infection and irritation, because sometimes it can be hard to get all of the soap out. Saline is best.

okay my mom went out and bought me the dial soap when i was at school, so can i use the dial soap to clean my belly button piercing instead of the Saline? The dial soap is like foam though, but im also cleaning it with the sea salt. SO, it should be okay right? Thanks again! :)

Saline can be purchased at any grocery store or pharmacy. Generally it's easier to purchase the bottle that looks like contact solution. You can find it next to the contact cleaners. Just make sure that you purchase saline and not contact solution or cleaner. The bottle will say saline on it. Generally it's not that expensive if you by the store's brand.

Chelby kay n.  says:

okay thanks, i'll just stop using the other soap and buy something that is better and that wont irritate it so much. DO you know where i can buy the saline at? And, how much it coasts? Thanks, i really appreciate your help. :)

You haven't had it very long at all. Expect redness. It's should have been common sense not to use scented considering the chemicals are going into a wound. Just stick with saline. Even non-scented antibacterial soap can cause irritation if you don't get all of the soap out of the piercing. Saline is much safer.

chelby kay n.  says:

i have a question i just got my belly button pierced on oct 1, and i have been cleaning it with scented antibacterial soap and no one told me not to use scented soap. and when ever i cleaned it with the scented soap i cleaned the inside of my belly button too, and now in the inside of my belly button on the side there is a red line and i was wondering if it is infected? There isnt any pus, or bleeding or anything. there is just a red line on the inside of my belly button.

Whitney05  says:

It will be just as sore as the top one. It's exactly the same thing, just on the bottom. Many people can't get the bottom pierced because of the way the navel is shaped, your piercer will have to let you know. Some will do it either way, so make sure that your piercer is going to tell you the truth as to whether your body is made for it or not. You don't want to spend the money and be doomed from the start.

Tongues heal fast. Just use non-alcohol mouthwash after every meal.

Hey Whitney (: .

I wrote to you ages ago about my belly-button piercing. It hasnt rejected and healed very quickly and hasnt been infected atall since I got it done in April (i think it was in April).

I was thinking about getting the bottom pierced .. will it feel as sore as when i got the top one done (the top one wasnt sore but i mean will it be painful or anything) ? And also, i know this isnt anything to do with this hub but can you give me any tips on tongue piercings ?

Thank you (: x

Ohh and Emma - why would someone call you a whore ? it's a piercing - one small hole - they're probably jealous of you so dont take no notice, get what you want done and if they're going to be bitchy f*ck them cos its your body, not theirs.

Beth The bump may go away, but it's hard to tell. Just keep the area clean.

ArmyWife, Sounds like you've got it all worked out. I don't think that you body can handle having it repierced.

ArmyWife  says:

Well I decided not to re-pierce it =( I got a tattoo instead however i severly miss my belly piercing. But the scar where it was rejected is a solid reminder that my body wont handle another one well. Actually most of my skin didnt re grow after the infection, all the skin that covered the bar when it was pierced is completely gone so i was ignorant for even considering re doing it.. Sadly ive given up hope. But on the other hand my husband and I are planning on children in the next year or so, so I really have no reason to want it. Thank you for your advice, it wouldve been saddening had i gotten it re done with the same painful rejection problem.

Hi-

I got my belly button pierced two weeks ago, and decided that I really really did not like it. I took it out yesterday, and the hole closed up, but i still have an angry looking red bump at the top. Will this go away? What should I do?

Thanks,

Emma, I wouldn't say it would be ripped out, but it will migrate. You can't prevent it from happening. Being that you're only 12, you're going to experience more growth, and it's bound to migrate. There are many stories below of young girls getting their navel pierced and having to have it redone. In this case, you'll have a scar, from the migration.

Rehanah I'm not sure what kind of pinkish thing you're talking about. Is is a bump or flat? It is more than likely just a scar.

rehanah  says:

i took my belly ring out permanently about 2 to 3 weeks ago .. its fine but theres this pinkish/brownish thing around the top hole .. i cant really see the hole anymore . maybe its closed but the pinkish thing around it kinda looks ugly . its sort of going down .. not a bump . it doesnt hurt or anything . is this normal scar or what ?

Emma  says:

Hi, I have a question. If someone in their teens 12-16 gets a belly button piercing done, is there a chance that if they have a growth spurt it can rip out?

And if that is true how can you prevent that from happening?

Im 12 years old and I really want a navel piercing, my parents said yes and everything because ive been having a really hard time lately, and i dont care if people say 'ohhhh trahsyy, sluuttyy, WHORE.'

I just want to get it done because i think they look really pretty.

I just wanted to know if it can rip out and leave a scar?

Thanks,

Oh and one more thing, if you got your navel done at like 12 or 13 can you tell me about your experience?

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

It will vary. It can range from shades or pink, red, purple, or even just skin tone. It'll be a raised scar. There won't be any pain associated with a keloid, generally.

anna  says:

one question how does a bump or a keloid look like???

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Virginia, Just keep cleaning, if it's not green, it's probably not infected.

Tipp, Just continue cleaning it. The bump may be keloid, which generally has to be surgically removed. Otherwise, it may just heal up. 3 weeks is still pretty early on, and probably not healed all the way. Just keep cleaning.

tipp  says:

I got mine done 3 weeks ago. The hole in the top is now a big bump. It's healed, no puss or any other discharge, but where the piercing is is a hard red lump. just leave it or is there something i should put on it? it doesnt hurt and im not worried about it, its just kinda ugly i suppose.

Virginia  says:

Hi! Ive gotten my belly button pierced for about almost 4 months. There is a really big red bump around the top. It has yellow pus but not green. Im pretty sure its infected, ive been cleaning it at LEAST once a day. Nothings happening though it seems like its not going away. should i try to clean it 3 times every single day or just go to the doctors? :[ Thanks so much..

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Izziy, yes. it's not infectious unless it's a yellow-green color. Just keep cleaning it.

rehanah, if it's infected then clear up the infection and then remove the jewelry. it won't hurt the migration any worse to heal the infection first. it doesn't sound infected, so if you wanted to take out the jewelry to let it heal up, then you should be fine. If it's not leaking a yellow-green pus, isn't sore or red, then it's not infected. The white lymph is normal healing.

rehanah  says:

okay so i've been reading through all the comments and i hope you can help me with my problem.

so i got belly pierced for more than 4 months now, almost 5 months that is. but my piercing is starting to migrate or its being rejected but it hasnt heal completely yet. and i know that if its migrating or rejecting, we should take the jewelry out. but what if its infected? should we still take it out? and i dont think mine's is infected. just going to ask you to make sure so that my belly wont get infected when i take the jewelry out or something.

well, my belly piercing doesnt hurt anymore. nothing really comes out like the lymph. only sometimes, very seldom there are white or clear liquid coming out after i take a shower or when i clean it. but only very little.

how do i know if it is infected or its just healing fine?

is mine infected or i can take it out and let the hole heal and close without it getting infected?

pls reply soon !! thnx. (:

izziy  says:

so you're saying that my piercing is fine ? so if i do take the jewellery out and let the hole close, the lymph or pus wont be stuck inside ? and once i remove it, how should i continue cleaning it ? will lymph still continue coming out or it wont ? and once the hole has been completely closed, no lymph or pus will come out ? like it cant get infected or smth ?

Whitney05 profile image

Whitney05  says:

Your skin isn't going to fall off. As long as everything has been healing fine, you can remove the jewelry while in the shower and should be fine.

Pus is not white. Pus is yellow-green. Pus is sign of infection. The white lymph, is normal healing.

izziy  says:

Heyy ! i got my belly piercing done around 3 - 4 months ago . i dont want it anymore and i want to remove it but im afraid if i remove the jewellery, the lymph might get stuck inside and wont come out and it will get infected . my skin is also getting thinner and if i dont take it out, it might fall off . so i really REALLY wna take it out and let the hole close and never get a piercing forever ! but what im scared is that white pus . it might get stuck inside .

HELP !
