Navel Ring
One of the most popular piercings in today's youth and young adult population- is the navel piercing, also known as the belly button piercing.
The standard navel piercing is through the upper ridge of the navel. Sometimes the navel piercing is through the lower ridge or the left and right ridges of the navel.
Although, history portrays variously decorated belly buttons and stomachs, there is no direct history related to the navel piercing. Today, it is solely a decorative piercing, mostly in the female population.
The body is prone to reject a navel piercing, but with proper care and healing methods, one could successfully heal a belly button piercing.
Many people see the navel piercing as a type of surface piercing, but it is not. Navel piercings are pierced on a curve, versus a flat plane. They are much easier to heal than surface piercings, and they are less likely to reject. Now, that does not mean that your body will not reject a navel piercing, but they are less likely to in comparison to a surface piercing.
And, on that note, many people will get reverse navel piercings which is nothing more than a horizontal piercing, usually below the navel. This is a surface piercing, and will be much harder to heal than the average belly button piercing.

Healing Belly Button Piercings
The navel piercing is relatively simple to heal. In some cases, depending on how a person sleeps, it can be a harder case to deal with.
It is preferable that one sleeps on his/her back while healing a navel piercing.
You should clean it once or twice a day with saline, or a sea salt solution. Put enough saline in a small, disposable cup so that when you lay down, the piercing will be fully covered. Let the piercing soak for 10 to 15 minutes before removing the cup.
In the shower, you can clean the jewelry and the area around the piercing with a mild soap. Gently push the jewelry through the piercing, cleaning the piercing with the soap. Make sure to get all the soap from around the piercing. Leaving soap in a wound, as a piercing is essentially a wound, can cause more irritation.
Navel Piercing Placement
Upper: The upper navel piercing, is the standard piercing, in which the jewelry is placed through the upper ridge above the belly button.
Lower: The lower ridge, directly below the belly button is pierced. Sometimes piercers will choose not to pierce the upper ridge, for anatomical reasons.
Sides: For decorative purposes, people may choose to have the sides (left and/right) of their belly button pierced. This cannot be performed on all people.
Reverse: The reverse navel piercing is a surface piercing below the belly button. The surface bar is placed horizontal versus the standard vertical piercing.
Belly Button Jewelry
Banana Barbell: The most common jewelry used in a navel piercing. The barbell is a slightly curved barbell with a ball on either side. The banana barbell can come with UV balls, metal, acrylic, logo, and patterns balls, as well as dangly fixtures.
Twister Barbells: Essentially, a twister barbell is a barbell that is twisted. Decorative balls can be placed on this particular barbell as well.
Captive Bead Ring (CBR):Sometimes people will wear CBR's in their navel piercing. This can cause a little pressure on the piercing itself.
Today, there are various forms of the above mentioned jewelry pieces. There are banana barbels with dangly attachments for aesthetic appeal. Some banana barbells can be found with logo balls, as well as glow in the dark balls, and other brightly colored acrylic and metal balls.

hey when you say sea salt, do u just me salt?
Stop playing with it, and clean it more often. You can use saline or a sea salt mix (1 teaspoon sea salt per 6 ounces of water). The clear liquid that's leaking is normal healing. The redness is because you're not caring for the piercing properly. Try reading the comments below.
i got my bellybutton pierced last saturday and its all crusty and has lots of liquid come out of it since getting it done i've only used salt water on it x3 times, i keep messing with it and im scared that its going to get infected :/ its all red around the top hole what can i do to make it better?
okay thats kool thanx alot :)
Yes, small paper cups. They're cheap and disposable. You can use any cup you want, but you'll have to wash it each time, which is why disposable is nice.
Soak the piercing in saline 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day.
Don't go to the spa with a new piercing. You can go, but don't get the piercing in anything. Don't go swimming, don't get in a pool, bath (take showers), lake, pond, river, ocean, etc. Wait until the piercing is healed or else your odds of infection bc bacteria got into the piercing is pretty high.
Generally, you want to do your research before you get a piercing.
okay cool thank you, so how often do i put saline a day? and can i use any cup.. or does it have to be a dixie cup? and is a dixie cup like a paper cup? and can i just use any normal cup? by the way are spas bad for the belly button piercing too? thanks :)
Circular barbells aren't the ideal jewelry for a navel piercing. The clear liquid is lymph, where it's adjusting to the different jewelry. Because a CBR has more of a curve than a banana barbell, the piercing will have to readjust a little. The bump could be scar tissue. I'd try cleaning it a for about a week or two with saline.
I had my piercing for about 2.5 years. In summer I changed it from the curved barbell I always wore to a circular barbell. Now I have recently noticed that there is a raised lump on the underside of my piercing. With pressure, it secretes a clear liquid, sometimes white pieces of phlegm or something of that consistency comes out. How should I take care of this?
Sophie, leave the piercing alone. THe clear liquid shows it's still healing. The blood shows you either pushed too hard or it's irritated, not necessarily infected though.
Tabz, You should not have changed the jewelry until healed. Being that you changed it too early, you have irritated it. The bump is more than likely scar tissue. You should not change the jewelry on a piercing until healed. Continue cleaning and leave it alone!
ckellers, does it hurt? It may be scar tissue if it's not sore. That may or may not go away on its own.
kelsey R I'd stop using antibacterial soap. saline is a liquid. It's not something you wash off. Pour some in a small bathroom sized dixie cup and flip the cup over the piercing to soak for 10 minutes. Remove the cup and dump the remaining saline into the sink. Throw away the cup. You skin will not disappear using saline. The previous person who asked about that experienced rejection, not skin dissolving.
hey ive been using ainti bacterial soap for 2 weeks, and now ive just gone to get saline.. ive applied it just about an hour ago but im not sure how u apply it, do u leave it on ur skin for 10 mins then wash it of? or just leave it..? and is it true that ur skin starts dissappearing? thanx :)
I have had my stomach peirced since february and just recently its gotten a red bump to the left of the peircing. I clean regularly but its not working. help?
ppl help! I got my belly button peirced 2 months ago and have changed it about a month ago nd i wanna change it again but theres this tiny purple lump underneath the bottom hole and it keeps making the jewellry crusty but it isn't sore!I've had it there before but it went nd now it's back agen! Should i change it anyway or is it infected? And will it go away on its own agen?
i have had my belly peirced for 5weeeks now, and when i push my belly bar down, some liquid and a tiny bit of blood comes out, is this normal?
please help?
trinican, it can take up to a year to heal, although most navel piercings heal with 6-9 months.
maadi, I doubt the saline dissolved your skin. The piercing more than likely rejected. Saline won't dissolve your skin. The piercing was being rejected by your body.
well its too late to take a picture now because my belly button isnt pierced anymore, im trying to say is when my belly button was periced all the skin that it was periced through like dissolved and my skin where it was periced got thin, then it eventually fell off yesterday. but im going to get it redone during the summer time but i was wondering what it could be from. I showed my mom and she said i might have over cleaned my belly button with the Saline Soultion, because thats the only thing that i was using and my skin started to dissolve and get real thin.
(If that makes any sence) But, thanks for your time!
thanks =]
how long do you think it will last a year? maybe
trinricon, the yellow/white is the lymph. It's not puss. The bump is not infection, it's probably scar tissue. To me it just doesn't sound like infection. Just healing.
maddi, I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to describe. The piercing could be rejecting. I'm not sure. Rejecting doesn't necessarily hurt and doesn't have to be infected. If you can get a picture and post a link to it here, I may be able to help more.
Hey i have a question i got my belly button periced a month ago, and i clean it out with Saline twice a day for 10 minutes every time. Well, thats the only thiong i clean it with and its healing great, but the problem is my skin has like dissolved or something because theres no more skin left on it. And, now yeseterday it just came off. DO you know what its from? i think i over cleaned it. It's not infected its healing up great though...
please help, thanks!
yeah... dont ask bout the pain reliever i looked it up and my friend did it and it worked for her.
It used to have yellowish or white puss coming out
but now nothing comes up not even crust.
So it just a really big bump that hurts me.
I really dont wanna take it out but it's been three months of infections.
the place where i got it done said the infection should be gone in 2 weeks. i gave it a month and its 3 months and still a bump.
help =[
If it's not leaking a dark yellow-green pus, then it's probably not infected. It's going to be sore if it's irritated. Keep cleaning with very diluted sea salt (1 tsp per 6 ounces of water) or saline. The white puss, is not puss but lymph which is normal healing. Pain relievers? Yea probably not a good idea. It doesn't sound infected, don't use the neosporin. Sometimes it just takes some people longer to heal piercings than normal. If you are adamant about the neosporin, put a teeny tiny bit on a q-tip, rub it on the barbell, push the barbell up and down, then wipe away anything left over on the barbell or skin because it can hold onto bacteria that will infect the piercing.
I really need help.
i got my piercing last april.
and i took it out and changed it like an idoit in august.
it's now Nov and its still not heald.
I clean it everyday sea salt.
at first it was going down and then when it should be going away it gets huge again and it has been doing that for two months and it would have white puss.
now its just a huge bump inside my piercing. you cant tell it's infected but it hurts me and there is a bump on the top.
i heard you can clean it with pain reliever pills. NOTHING WORKS and my dad is being ignorant and wont take me to the doctors.
so im startig to get worried since its three months with infection i just put neosporn on it
i really need advice!
Sometimes piercing through scar tissue can cause longer healing, but that is not always the case. It is pretty much an individual basis.
Yes, sleeping on your stomach will increase risk of complications, and you should really try to sleep on your back or side while healing the piercing. The eye patch will potentially benefit you if you must sleep on your stomach, just be careful if it moves or you jerk and move the eye patch that it doesn't snatch the jewelry.
Very diluted sea salt is fine to use. I'm not sure about the emu oil. Just stick with sea salt or saline solution.
Hi Whitney!
I just recently had my naval re-pierced (Oct 31st) and all seems well so far (of course, only 9 days in). Previously, I had my naval piercing in for 9 months but it slowly rejected (I had it removed before it grew all of the way out). I waited 16 months before repiercing it. I obviously have scar tissue. How does this affect the healing of my new piercing? I was told that the scar tissue could possibly make the healing process take longer this time. Do you agree? One other thing. I understand that sleeping on your stomach could increase the chance of infection, rejection, migration, etc (I did not take this into consideration with my last piercing, I would wake up with it irritated). I constantly sleep on my stomach and toss/turn. Do you have any suggestions? I know that you are not supposed to use bandaids to cover your piercing because it needs to breath. I've been putting an eye patch on my naval for when I sleep at night and it seems to keep everything comfortable(I do sleep with t-shirts on). I don't wake up with irritation like I did with my first piercing. I am also using the sea salt soak twice a day and applying emu oil(not sure if that's the correct spelling) twice daily. Sorry for the novel, I just want to do it correct this time and give my piercing the best chance of "surviving".
Thanks =)
If it's green pus and not lymph, then it's infected. Keep cleaning it. If it gets worse, you may have to see a doctor for an antibiotic. You can apply a teeny tiny dab of antibiotic ointment or cream, like Neosporin on the jewelry, carefully push it through the piercing, and gently wipe away the excess using a q-tip.
i got my belly pierced a few months ago before summer ended . & now i clean it everyday , but it's red at the top of the hole green pussy stuff comes out & you would say that it's infected , i think it is , but i don't know what to do to fix it . it hurts , but not as bad as it did a week ago . & when i look at it , on the top ball & some times the bottem one , there's stuff on it & sometimes it's a redish color , sometimes it's different colors . it bleeds sometimes also . & i don't understand ?? what do i do ??
It usually doesn't take too long, but in general how long it will take to close up will depend on your body. It may take a few months or so.
i just touch it to see if it hurts . and yes i do clean it everyday when i take a shower .
oh and it doesnt hurt anymore . i stopped touching it and it doesnt hurt at all .
how long will it take for it to be completely closed and how will i know that its closed ? can i go swimming or smth ?
Rehanah, Why are you touching it? You could be irritating it. Did you continues cleaning it after taking out he jewelry, so to keep the area clean while closing up?
Karen, it's probably not an infection unless you've got dark yellow-greenish pus coming out. It's probalby just irritated and still healing.
Melissa, It's just migrating. There's not much you can do. Unless it was just pieced crooked; and in that case there's still nothing you can really do. Is the top crooked or just the bottome crooked? How exactly is it sitting?
hey guys,
I got my belly button pierced a month ago and I noticed it is trying to park to the right side...what do I do? Can I train it to heal in the middle again?
HI, i gto my belly pierecd about 3 months ago and it is still a little red on the top part and still bleeds from time to time, it doesn't hurt at all but can this be an infection?
hi so yeah you know i took my belly ring off permanently in early september . its fine but few days ago, it kinda hurts when i touch it . do u think theres smth wrong or is it cus i keep touching it ? its not red or anything and it seems fine . jut wondering why it hurts sometimes when i touch it . but it doesnt hurt much .
any help ?
Sounds like scar tissue.
I got my belly button pierced in august and i changed the ring in the begining of october, i just tried to change it again to and i cant get the ring back in, there is a hard knot at the bottom on the inside of the belly button. do you know why or what it is?
help!!
Rubbing alcohol will dry out the piercing and can cause severe irritation. Saline is naturally occurring in your body and it won't cause any irritation. If a piercer told your friend to use rubbing alcohol, you never want to go to him again; no piercer who knows what he's doing and talking about would ever recommend it.
I'm not able to pull up the site from work. Does the piercing look like the second one posted above? If so it's just a standard piercing- just on the bottom. All navel piercings that are on the navel are standard- top, bottom, left, or right.
http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com/gallery/data/512/
Thats the type i mean when I say inverse. so I'm guessing it's simply a reversed piercing? Or a lower belly button piercing? I know you say Saline is best, but whats the difference in using Saline compared to rubbing Alcohol? Sorry if thats a silly question, but, I'm curious as my friend just got a standard belly button piercing done and the man who did it told her to use the rubbing alch.?
Thanks for the help thus far. It's been much appreciated! =)
As long as your clothes cover up the new piercing, the dust shouldn't bother it, but that doesn't mean to put a bandage on it. Just make sure your clothes cover it, but aren't tight. By inverse, do you mean a bottom belly button or a surface piercing that goes horizontal underneath the navel?
Tight clothes are not optimum for a navel piercing. The dust isn't good, but if you can get clothes that cover them, it won't be as bad.
If you mean just right for you in the sense of top or bottom navel? It will depend on how yours is shaped.
Hi Whitney : )
I'm considering getting a piercing done soon. I’m 17 and haven't been to a piercing pr tattoo shop before (don't even have my ears done). Is there something I can do to prepare for a piercing? How can you tell which one is 'just right' for you?
Also, I'm a horse trainer. I do many hours of work each day down at the barn, so I’m always around dust, or wearing slightly tight clothes during a show. I had been thinking of getting an inverse navel piercing.. But, with current conditions it wouldn't be too smart, would it? Or would it be okay to get even though i work around horses? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Some of the reverse jewelry you could use, but for the most part there's no reason to because they are extremely heavy and can easily cause migration and/or irritation due to the weight.
I was just wondering, if I have a regular belly button piercing on the top of my navel, that means that I can't use reverse jewelry, correct?
I'm not sure what it is, but it's not bad. It's like when you have your ears pierced, and you can sometimes push solid discharge out of it. I believe it's something like that, although I'm not 100% sure.
I got my belly button done Last year in Jan. for my birthday. I got into some trouble & it was taken out by my mom That June.. Its been awhile and it has the skin tone type of scar on the top. I noticed the other day when I squeezed it- white stuff came out of it.. it wasn't running like puss- it was more like a noodle (stuck together in the form of a noodle)
Whats this caused by?? is that normal after servel months of healing??
okay thanks for all you'r help, i bought me the Saline yesterday and been cleaning it with that, and nothing else. It is healing up alot better :) You'r the best!
It's still soap. Like I already said, using any type of soap is going to give you high risk of infection and irritation, because sometimes it can be hard to get all of the soap out. Saline is best.
okay my mom went out and bought me the dial soap when i was at school, so can i use the dial soap to clean my belly button piercing instead of the Saline? The dial soap is like foam though, but im also cleaning it with the sea salt. SO, it should be okay right? Thanks again! :)
okay, thanks so much i'm ganna go out and buy it today after i get home from school!
Saline can be purchased at any grocery store or pharmacy. Generally it's easier to purchase the bottle that looks like contact solution. You can find it next to the contact cleaners. Just make sure that you purchase saline and not contact solution or cleaner. The bottle will say saline on it. Generally it's not that expensive if you by the store's brand.
okay thanks, i'll just stop using the other soap and buy something that is better and that wont irritate it so much. DO you know where i can buy the saline at? And, how much it coasts? Thanks, i really appreciate your help. :)
You haven't had it very long at all. Expect redness. It's should have been common sense not to use scented considering the chemicals are going into a wound. Just stick with saline. Even non-scented antibacterial soap can cause irritation if you don't get all of the soap out of the piercing. Saline is much safer.
i have a question i just got my belly button pierced on oct 1, and i have been cleaning it with scented antibacterial soap and no one told me not to use scented soap. and when ever i cleaned it with the scented soap i cleaned the inside of my belly button too, and now in the inside of my belly button on the side there is a red line and i was wondering if it is infected? There isnt any pus, or bleeding or anything. there is just a red line on the inside of my belly button.

Nope. When I say "sea salt," that's exactly what I mean. Never use table salt with a new piercing. You want to purchase sea salt, which can be purchased in the same area of the grocery store. It clearly states, 'sea salt.' You want no more than 1 teaspoon per 6 ounces of water.
