New York Bagels
70A little taste of my Heaven
So recently I took a trip to Long Island, NY where I had grown up. I went to visit my cousins. It had been awhile since I had been back. My parents sold their house on the Island and moved to Florida about 4 years ago so there has not been much reason for me to get back to often. I had left Long Island many years ago and moved to Florida to end up now in the country in Pennsylvania and the one thing you cannot find here is a good bagel. Well or any other food like you can find in NY for that matter. Dutch cooking really is not my thing and if you are from NY or grew up in NY you know what I am talking about.
So when I do get to visit NY the one thing I always have to get is Bagels. Bagels from New York are my Heaven. To me there is nothing better than a great tasting Onion Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese from NY. OK so it is not the best on your breath, but it does not matter to me one bit.
I do not miss living there really, but I do miss all the good food. It is funny how every trip to NY consists of what places we will be stopping to eat - Bagels of course, Egg Sandwiches from the Deli, Pizza, My Favorite Greek Restaurant, The Italian Bakery for my favorite cookies and White Castle are always top on my list.
This trip I did not get to do them all, but I did get my Bagels, My Italian Cookies and White Castle.
The Selection
For me it is the Onion Bagel
There are so many choices of Bagels to choose from, but for me onion is my number one choice. If that was not available then next would be an Everything and then Garlic. Yup all the ones that make your breath stink.
I enjoy the Scallion Cream Cheese. My sister loves Olive Cream Cheese and my step mother - well her favorite is Lox Cream Cheese. The Vegetable Cream Cheese is yummy too. Then they have some other choices that I am not crazy for like Blue Berry and others. That is just not my thing.
So when at the bagels store we buy a dozen or so to eat while visiting and a dozen or so to bring home for later. I have a bunch in my freezer right now to last me a week or so.
The Funny Part
So here I am in NY at the bagel store early in the morning with my cousin. I am of course armed with my camera as always. I looked like some crazy tourist. So I asked if they minded if I took some pictures while I was there and I told them why (I blog). They said they did not mind at all and told me how these were the best Bagels in town. I had never been to this Bagel store before so I really had to be the judge of that.
So they asked if I would blog the store name. So being originally from NY I said sure, but if you can give me a break on the cost. So would ya know when it came time to pay the owner disappears. Typical New Yorker!!! I guess I have the New Yorker left in me too; No Blog For You!!!
So as you can see there is no mention of the store or all the other pictures I took that morning. So were they the best Bagels in town? I would have to say no and only because they were not. BUT they were still very good and I enjoyed them just the same.

Bagels for the Dogs
My Dogs love Bagels too. What I do is get them plain Bagels and let them get stale and hard. Then I give one to each of my 3 dogs to munch on vs. a rawhide. It is much better for them and they can digest it easier. It is only a treat every now and then for them and they love it.
You will find a lot of Bagel stores have Doggie Bags of Yesterdays Bagels.

I haven't been to NY so I can't say I've had a bagel there. On the other hand, I lived on the gulf coast in Florida for awhile many years ago. There were many transplanted New Yorkers there and bagel shops were actually fairly common. I worked in a hospital that had no option for employees to eat there. We ate lunch out everyday. I had many, many bagels and bagel sandwiches. Like you, the onion bagel with the scallion cream cheese sounds like a great choice for me!
FUGETTABOUTIT those bagels were awesome!!
y car still smells like onion bagels!!
I too miss the Greek Salads,Gyro and the spanakopita!!

Love the happy face. Yummy looking hub.
OK, now I'm really wanting a bagel, better make sure my cat isn't around! One of my favorite is the mixed topping (poppy seeds, toasted onion, sesame seeds, etc and hummus)
Well anyway, thanks for visiting my hub, loved this one!
@elisabethkcmo Too Funny - I have a picture I took of my attacked bagels - when I find it I will share with you. Gotta love them.

Yes,, you can not find a good bagel anywhere except NY although Jersey has some good ones too at the Bagel Bistro in Kearny, NJ.. Curious what is the favorite Greek restaurant.. Greek Village???? LOVE that place..my fav the salad and pitas. I like the cinnamon raisin bagels as well as the EGG.. Everything for me has to be for lunch or dinner,,, not in the AM and I do like cream cheese lox and onions. I think that I need the bagel magnet. Yes.. I knew about getting them shipped but I have my mom and dad and father in law bring them everytime they visit us..wherever we may be! Myhubby also gets the EGG sandwich at the deli on a bagel with Taylor ham THAT I THINK IS AN EXCLUSIVE THING ONLY TO THE NORTH EAST!! :)
