Obama – now we believe America
We, from the rest of the world, will now take America seriously when it says it is the land of equal opportunity. Obama has won, and is living proof that the dream of Martin Luther King is realized. His victory shows that the minority can have a majority!
Barack Obama, the 44th president is a symbol of possibility, opportunity and hope realized.
In India, we had a caste system, which is not unlike racism. Our forward castes were generally fair-skinned and the lower ones dark. Our women were oppressed by the chauvinist types, but we have had a woman prime minister and many women ministers. We now have the first woman president of India in office. We have had people from the lower castes in all seats of power.
We have always wondered why the US, with its talk of equality, never had a woman for president or one who was not white-skinned.
Today America has given an answer, and we join our American brothers and sisters in celebration. One day you will have a woman for president, possibly an African-american woman for president, and we believe you.
Now let us celebrate!

Well timed Kenny I hadn't heard the news! Now I just hope he has the best security of any US public figure - and its not the foreign terrorists I'm worried about
We share your concerns here in Canada Lissie. We have talked a lot about not just whether Obama will be elected but whether he will be given the opportunity to serve out his term. I certainly hope so!
Lissie- Obama won by a landslide (twice that of McCain). Btw even presidential designates have the security cover which is top notch so don't worry.
LOL Kenny, I am afraid it's a bit too early to celebrate. Not that that I am having anything against Obama personally, I just think America has tough time ahead regardless, and whoever the president is, he don't have much room for maneuver...
But yeah, Obama definitely looks safer for countries outside US :)
Oh, and love your new avatar, too :)
It's refreshing to get the international perspective from intelligent hubbers. Your comments are exactly what we here in America were hoping for. We have hated what Bush et al did to our image in the world. We are ashamed. But no more.
Agree -- Obama has an uphill battle. He has been saddled with a giant morass.
And yes, we cannot be too complacent about this victory. America has a sad legacy of losing its best and brightest leaders in the prime of their lives. There have already been threats on Obama. And again -- I doubt the threat against him will come from outside the country. Sick as that is... We are a divided, divisive country.
I am thrilled to be alive for this historic election. I am proud to be an American. As for Obama's safety, I am sending out positive thoughts that he will live to a healthy and hearty ripe age of 90.
Thanks, Rachelle - my son's glasses they are; he is in a Lennon mode now. :)
Lissie, you are right. It's sad that anyone these days in power has threats that are directly proportional to the office.
Misha, my brother, I celebrate the victory for equal opportunity, I don't know if he will bring us out of the depression. But hope is running high, and hope is what we live on.
Thank you, Mighty Mom, for calling me an intelligent hubber! :)
Maren, good for you, positive and proud!
Happy Obama Day!Yes, that's right - Gamergirl said it. I voted for Obama, not because he's black, not because he's not a Republican, not because it'd make Mark/Misha/etc wrinkle their noses and wonder, but because he has not cracked under the limelight, because he presents a POSITIVE movement for our country, because he appears to, in all things, genuinely wish to connect with and improve conditions for everyone from the bottom up.
I want change, and the opportunity and avenue for change in a large way (how many backwards people can now say that a black person cannot make it big in this country? COMMANDER IN CHIEF, BABY!) comes with Barack Obama.
Ann Coulter must be choking on her bottle blonde hair right now..
Hi Kenny - I wondered where you'd been hanging out! Yes, it's great news for the rest of the world. He's inherited some big problems of course, but I think people will be inclined to support and help him. Goodwill returns to the high office!
Good to hear from you again, Kenny- nice glasses, ~0~0~ :)
I am grateful Obama won, we need the change. He strikes me as a very consciously aware man, you know, spiritual, by the way he talks, his focus on not having a negative campaign, and how he remains very calm.
Thanks, Charlotte.
Paraglider, I was swamped with work, but came out briefly to celebrate.
VioletSun, thank you for liking my ~0~0~
:)
I am enthralled with YES energy and thankful to hear your opinions as someone who's outside of the U.S. (Love the picture, too)!
Yes its true, America has proved it, but i wish they uphold same support through, because as Misha said, "America has tough time ahead regardless, and whoever the president is, he don't have much room for maneuver..." its only the same support extended can see him go through and our hopes. Nice hub Old buddy.
Now you are looking so great, its nice makeover.
Thank you, Rainbow for comment and kind words on my picture. :)
Thank you, Eswar, but all that can come later. Today, let's celebrate. The world badly needs some celebration.
Thanks for the compliments, old pal! :)
That's right, celebration is everywhere, and I do join in that. I believe Chennai hosted a big celebration among those outside US.
I'll SERVE THE WINE...who's ready?? LOL...Yes Kenny my sweet, handsome brut, your new Pic is wonderful and your son is good at giving you so many looks...
Prayers for our new President and his family...
and as an American I know we will all pull it together and things will be better for all...Sometimes we need to be brought down a notch or two too get back to the the real reasons for life.God needs to return in our schools and in our everyday lives...
Thanks Kenny for writing this hub and as it has been said "Good to see you"...G-Ma :o) hugs
Cheers, Eswar and G-ma! :)
You are right, G-ma. God is everywhere, waiting for people to take Him into their hearts.
Hugs, you pretty girl!
With Gran serving the wine and you presenting the good words, How can we go wrong?
I believe he will be good for australia.
Thank you
Yes, Frank, and for the rest of the world. He's a symbol, and we need symbols of hope in these times. Thank you, and cheers with the wine!
Kenny! I missed youand your great hubs! Awesome new avatar. History in the making if nothing else. I'm quite a sceptic about politicians and their fables. At the same time I'm also hopeful that this new president will not disappoint not just the US but the rest of the world too. Do you suppose he is aware of just how much depends on him keeping his word?
Great hub Kind Sir as always, kindest regards Zsuzsy
Nice to see you, Zsuzsy! :) And thank you for your gracious words.
He must be aware, of course. Your combination of scepticism and hope, that kind of mixed feelings is what most feel. We have to wait and see, but let's wait with that hope. Looks like he will do his best. And anyway, the president is not a single man, he is an organisation.
Glad to be reading all these positive statements that you generated with this welcoming of Obama hub. I do believe the whole world is 'electrified' by the outcome of this election. America now has the opportunity to rid it's image as the scourge of the world, to something more like a positive force as a real participant in the global family.
My previous reply seems to have vanished!
Thank you, Vitaeb. This is a great makeover for America's image, right.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR..... MY DEAR SWEET FRIEND...G-Ma :o) Hugs to all
Have a big, warm Christmas with your loving family, G-Ma! Hugs and kisses. xxoooxx
Thank you Kenny,
and maybe someday we will have a poorQpine for senator!
Yes this election is historical but what is even more amazing is how the Final Fundraising Tally for Obama during the presidential campaign, exceeded $750 Million, shattering all previous fundraising records.
Lol, PoorQpine! Thanks.
And thank you, RA.
Hmnn, India's caste system-- I do hope it doesn't exist right now! We're in the age were equality prevails.
As of Obama---who knows? We always want changes, aren't we?
Yes, not much.
Let us at least hope and dream of good times.
Yes, I agree...America can now say for real that we are a land of opportunity.
I find everything about India facinating-from the culture to the architecture. The people are beautiful to me too (dark and light).
Thank you, Darlene. Yes, we are a mix of colours! :)
I'm coming late to this party, but I too am glad to hear the election of Obama has raised America's standing in the world. After the 8-year nightmare of that pitiful excuse for a president named Bush, Barack Obama is a much-needed breath of fresh air! A president who can speak in grammatically correct sentences that actually mean something and who *really* cares about this once-great country will be such a delight! Never mind the messages he'll be delivering won't always be good news. It's enough that there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel that isn't another freight train! Even better that this "light" is a "skinny half-black kid" raised by a white grandmother to be a Citizen of the World. As we all should be.
Yes, it has raised America's stature, Jama. It is also something that approaches my ideal of One World for all.
Thank you. You may be late, but you are the latest! :)
Yes, the world is watching and I have faith and confidence that President Obama and the fine people he's chosen will raise our country back to be a nation of diplomacy and respect for the millions of good people from all around the world.
A note of hope. Thank you, Iaringo.
We hope for an egilitarian system where color of your skin is not a hindrance to be successful.
Yes, efa, and this is a sign of the times. Thanks!
Very Godd Hub! Very Well Written! I loved it!
Aw, thank you very much mdawson! :)))
very very good and well placed about the times of change
Thank you, Str8 :)
well written...verry good article
Thank you for the compliments, Nms
Personally I liked Edwards, he was out by the time we got primaries. I went HIllary over Obama based on experience level. However since he was our dem candidate and anything beats continued Bush policies, I was for Obama in the presidential. I think, as you said it did for you, that it restored a lot of faith in the united states across the world. He's doing ok so far. I'm not one of those 'obama is the messiah' people, but he is smart, charming and rather delightfully arrogant. I like to think he has good intent and the charisma to pull off his plans through Congress although the majority dem congress rather assures that too. So yay! I'll celebrate with you.
For me it's rather symbolic, and it's high time. Thank you, my friend for having the final yay. :)
:) I love to celebrate almost anything with you, but yes, this last election was hugely important to me. I'm so glad American citizens finally made the world safer by keeping another foreign policy madman out of office and putting in someone with some intelligence and some common sense.
I agree that President Obama's election shows America to be a real land of opportunity! Thank you for this positive hub!
Thank you, wannabwestern, I try to be positive. :)
Iðunn! Apologies and thanks. I see this comment of yours after two months. Bad me!
