5 Online Dating Myths

Online dating has been around for quite a long time now, but many people still think poorly of it for one reason or another; most commonly due to the many myths surrounding it. To be sure, there was a time when singles ads were meant as a desperate attempt to find love by poor souls who couldn't pay someone to escort them to the local McDonald's. This is hardly the case now. The myths of online dating really need proper dispelling, so let's get to it.

Myth #1:  Attractive people don't use online dating sites

Total BS. There are loads of sexy, attractive men and women using online dating services. People who could score decent dates easily enough, but may not have time, or any interest in scoping out the bar scenes. More on that in a few minutes, but for now just realize that online daters come in all shapes and sizes, just as they do at the local bar.

Myth #2: Only desperate people use online dating sites

This one is just absurd. If anything, online daters are simply more discerning and have grown tired of the bar scene. And who doesn't eventually grow tired of pushing your way through drunk people who smell badly and keep stepping on your toes? Desperate people? I think not. Clever people is more like it.

Myth #3 : Only losers use online dating sites

There are loads of perfectly evolved people using internet dating sites. Plenty of successful businessmen and CEOs, plenty of doctors, lawyers and such. Do we typically class those people as losers? Most women would be all over that at the local bar -- finding these guys online just makes it that much easier.

Myth #4: People do not meet their soulmate online

On the contrary, I've heard of this happening more often online than in person. Every day, in fact. I've met a few good men online and I've no doubt there are plenty more where they came from. I actually know a couple who met online 10 years ago and are the most in love people I've ever met.

Myth #5: People look down on couples who meet online.

While this may have raised eyebrows a few years ago, nowadays this is prime dinner party conversation. People are often mesmerized by stories of people meeting online and falling in love -- people don't look down on these couples, they're impressed by them. And when traditional couples break up, they go straight to online dating to find their next partner.

Great info. I've met and dated lots of great people on-line. My girlfriend and I even met on-line. I have a friend that always complains about how lonely he is and how he can never meet anyone. I try to convince him to try on-line dating, but he thinks myths, like the ones you pointed out, are truths. Someday he'll get it.
