Outdoor Christmas Decorations
82Decorating for Christmas
If you are big into decorating your house for Christmas, you don't want to forget the outside. I mean, for the most part you and you family and guests will be the only people to ever see the inside of you home, but you want to make an impression to everyone else with the outside.
When decorating for the Christmas holiday, you have loads of options that you can consider for Christmas yard decorations, so when going out to look at the different options you can go simple with just icicle lights and lighted pathways, or you can get fun and creative with a full decorated yard.
The one thing that you want to make sure is that you do not go overboard! I have seen houses where I swear the home owner when out and raded the inflatable outdoor Christmas decorations and plugged every last one of them in the front yard. This is just a tad much, if you as me, but maybe one amongst a few other decorations could be laid out nicely.
Below you will find several outdoor Christmas decorations that you may want to consider purchasing when decorating your front yard for Christmas, as well as a few tips for making sure that you yard is the best looking on this season.

Warnings for Decorating Your Yard
Ok before I really get started, you want to make sure that you carefully read the following warnings for decorating your yard for the Christmas season.
- Make sure that you read the warning instructions on all yard decorations and lights.
- Make sure that you have plenty of electrical outlets and that you do not overload then. Try to keep 3 plugs per outlet.
- Make sure to use lights that are OUTDOOR LIGHTS. It's not a good idea to purchase indoor Christmas decorations and hope that they stand the winter season outside. It's just not a good idea.
Other warnings and tips that you want to consider for your own safety and stress level, may include:
- Make sure that you don't procrastinate. You may find that if you put all of your decorations out at the last minute, your stress level will be sky-rocketed and more than likely your yard will be hodge- podge and thrown together.
- Try not to get into a competition when decorating your yard for Christmas, unless it is a friendly competition. Decorating is supposed to be fun, so the more your compete the less fun you will have. Plus, more than likely you will find yourself overloading the electrical outlets and spending more money in the end looking for better.
- Avoid using too many large decorations and make sure that you don't overcrowd your yard. Make sure that you know the space that you have to work with and stick with that and nothing more.

Tips for Decorating your Front Yard for Christmas
When decorating your front yard, you want to make sure that you have a strategy, so that means assess your yard before you go out and purchase tons of random decorations that you like. You want to make sure that your Christmas decorations all match versus your yard ending up being a complete hodge- podge of decorations.
Make sure that you know what areas of your house and yard that you want to focus on and work from there. It will be much easier if you have a focal point, and on that note, make sure that you only have one to three focal points unless you really do want that over the top look.
Ok, now that you think you've got an idea of what focal points you want to implement in your Christmas yard decorations, you want to make sure that you hang Christmas lights. I mean, who decorates their yard for Christmas and doesn't use lights.
You can purchase lighted icicles, rows of lights, and bush covers. You just want to be careful when hanging lights in trees and high branches.

Nativity Scenes: If you use a nativity scene in your yard, it is best to have a spotlight or some kind of lighting on the ground to shine the scene.
Wreaths and garland: by trimming your door with garland or at least hanging a wreath on your door, you can create an elegant feel. You can even mix outdoor lights with the garland to mix it up a bit.
Make sure that you do not copy your neighbors decorations. Be unique and creative with your design. If you are looking at coming up with the best design, you just can't do that if you copy someone else's ideas.
Also, when decorating your front yard for Christmas, you want to consider the different forms of lighting. You will be abel to find clear lights, colored lights, motion lights, lit animated decotations, lit inflatable decoratins, lit motionless decorations, as well as other various yard decorations and yard art.
Some of the common characters that you will find available for yard Christmas decorations typically include:
- Santa
- Reindeer
- Penguins
- Snowmen
You can also find fun character Christmas yard decorations such as Homer Simpson, the Grinch, Sponge Bob, and a few others.
Have fun with your yard and decorating it. Just try not to go overboard with it.

Yea I saw a few pretty cool Halloween decorations when I was looking up these. I'm usually not a fan of making holiday hubs, but figured, I'd give it a try and maybe it'd be nice to me. Ha. You should do a hub on your Halloween decorations and post a picture when you're done.
It's a deal! I will try to shoot a nice HDR photo of the Halloween decorations when it is all done tonight. Thanks for the idea :)
Sweet. I think you could do a cool hub about decorating for Halloween and post pictures. It would be interesting to see.
My Halloween decoration hub is up. It is my first hub in a few weeks. I have been a slacker since I started Hubpages.
Wow! Thanks for your tips and I cant wait for Christmas! I love decorating and I personally love your idea! 3 thumbs-up for you!
I'm glad that you liked the hub. Thanks for the comment.
Whitney! another super duper hub. I put most of my decorations up outside last week. Just have to do a bit of fine tuning then I start turning on the lights on the first advent Sunday.
Greetings from Canada, regards Zsuzsy
My Dad hates putting up the lights every year... but my Mom LOVES to have the whole house decorated. So next time my Dad upsets me, I'll just email my Mom a link to this hub ;)

I am not into the outdoor Christmas decorations as much as I LOVE outdoor Halloween decorations. In fact, tonight is the night that I am going to get it going. The kids love my decorations, but I get mixed reviews from the neighbors.
