There are a great many Minecraft texture packs out there. The secret is in choosing one that reflects your style of play. Pixeludi was the Webhallen.com Minecraft Texture Pack Grand Prix winner, and for good reason. It's a texture pack that crowbars a great deal of atmosphere into the 16x16 style.

HD texture packs are all the rage right now, but for those who don't want to mess around with the minecraft.jar just to add a texture pack, 16x16 texture packs are where it is at.

Pixeludi is in much the same style as popular texture packs like Quandary and Painterly, but it does have some advantages to those great texture pack leviathans. For one, it was very quickly updated to include all the new Beta 1.2 update items, like colored cloth and cake and such. Quandary and Painterly cannot make the same claim.

So what can you expect from Pixeludi? Allow me to traipse through some observations I made.

All the doors have been transformed into dungeon doors, which means this texture pack probably won't suit people who have been building in what I like to call the 'Minecraft Nouveau' style, using a lot of half stone blocks and wood planks. Having said that however, it is highly unlikely that anyone building in that style would be looking for an RPG style texture pack.

The Pixeludi cake is without a doubt far more cakier than the default Minecraft cake. Indeed, the Pixeludi cake looks good enough to eat. Seriously. Looking at it almost makes me smell the sweet smell of cinnamon, and pink, which isn't a smell, but you still know what I mean, don't you.

Mmmm Minecraft cake...

The armor meter has been transformed from a line of hipster t shirts to a series of shields, which not only makes more sense, it also makes one feel as if one is being defended by something more substantial than an existential crisis.

My only criticism of the pack is the same criticism I have of Painterly et al. There's something about the GUI that feels heavy and clunky (though I do like what Pixeludi did with the inventory interface.)

All in all, I'd say that Pixeludi achieves the goal it set out to achieve. It keeps the basic feel of Minecraft, adds a bit of ye olde charm and uses the powerful forces of better art to make the world feel more substantial as a whole.
