Places to Sell Your Writing - Writer's Markets
Lately, I seem to be running into people who aren't sure where to look for places to sell their writing. It surprises me a little.
Before internet was a household staple, we old fogies used the Writer's Market. I still consider it the writer's bible, and mine is loaded with little sticky tabs that make a rainbow of colours around the edges. Each one marks a page that has a potential market for my writing wares. There are listings and advice in that book that I consider invaluable, but this article is about online submissions so I won't expound any more of the publication's virtues. It is worth checking out, though.
I've decided to break up the links into categories, and supply a brief description.

Thanks so much, great hub :)
Thx, Amy Jane. Yes, gotta love The Writer's Market. I've used it for many years. If anyone wants a vintage copy, I still have mine from 1997 (or is it 94).
I hope there's something new for you here.
Thank-you, Univited Writer! Like I said to Amy Jane, I did this hub in hopes that there would be something new and helpful, even to those who regularly study the markets.
These sites sound great. Which is your favorite?
Added to my favorites.
Excellent info - I subscribe to Writers Market!
Hi Whitney05 - I use Online Writing Jobs and Aboutfreelancing.com the most. I've successfully gotten jobs from these sites, I think that's why I'm partial to them. For print markets, I stick with my Writer's Market (the book).
Like I mentioned in the hub, there are sooooo many sites, that I could do more hubs with more links.
If you're thinking of submitting your work, I hope some of these can help you.
Stehhicks - Thank-you! I like Writers Market, and use it, too. Also, I suscribe to Long Range Writer's Group, and Writer's Gazette. I figured these were common and I wanted to list some that people may not have explored yet.
So many markets, so little time.
Thank-you, Sir Dent! I appreciate it. Hope there's something useful to you here in this hub.
Shirley! Thank you for sharing these sites. I've copied them into my folder for future reference.
I just looked at the back of my book shelf and the oldest Writers Market I can see is 1978 do you suppose its going to be worth something as an antique? (Hahaha you should see the poor thing it has highlighted notes and tabs stuck through-out the whole thing) I can't believe I've carted those old things around with me all these years.
Great hub regards Zsuzsy
I'm so glad these can be of some good to you, Zsuzsy!
OMG - I can't believe you have a '78. Bet it was thinner. I still have my '94 Canadian Writer's Market, too. I can't bear to part with those books. They have great articles in them, and they represent a prolific time of my life.
Maybe you could sell your '78 on eBay.
Shirley! None of them are thinner, the '78 just has an ugly grey cover. I've been buying a copy every year since, always with the hopes of having enough time to finish and publish my writings. They all have a bunch of great advice articles in them so I don't think I'll be getting rid of them. Again thanks for the great list. zs
I have written a few poems and short stories. I did find a place to sell some devotions to but not sure if I will do that or not. You may also want to put Lulu.com on your list also. I am currently adding a song to my store there. It's a free download, if anyone wants it just get in touch with me through the email system here.
I used to use the writers market many years ago ( I think it was Australian one) not sure now. But found so many that were not up to date. so it must have been old like me. Will have to check these out. Like you told me I might try and do some more with helpful leadlighting articles. Have to get my butt working. gave it Although spending too much time in here. no not really. Great useful hub
gave it the thumbs up and bookmarked thanks
Thx for the support, Eileen!
You're time here isn't wasted....use your hub links for clips, I do it daily and it works to get jobs.
I have no doubt whatsoever that you will do well when you're ready to start submitting to some newer markets.
Meantime, I think you and Szusy Bee and I should have our old Writer's Markets put on display at the Smithsonian. :)
Thanks a lot, Shirley - very helpful info - I'll be bookmarking this one! ;o)
Thanks For this nice hub.
You have done a great research to find all these stuff...
I appreciate all the kind words from everyone, thank-you so much!
Hi, Shirley!
As usual, you have created a masterpiece! I am adding this to my favorites for easy reference. I had thought about trying to publish some of my short stories. My hubby wants me to publish Angel's Last Dance, which I did post on here and he is thrilled about that. But he is still pushing me to try to do more with it and some of the others. Men just don't give up, do they? LOL Thanks for another wonderfully written, very useful hub!
Bonnie
This is such a great hub! I am new to all this, so any information is a treasure. Thank you very much.
Wow, thanks for the info. I am always looking for ways to make money writing. Great Hub!
It's very refreshing to read hubs like yours. I appreciate your effort in doing a lot of the "net"work for us. I've got some reading to do. Thanks a bunch!
It is truly amazing here at HubPages! This is my first time in less than a month as a member to read some hubs and in just going over a few hubs, I had found here many of what I have been looking for in the past 4 years! The titles alone led me to what I was looking for, compared to links, it is more convenient to do a search here! I never thought I could find one like this online.
Oh man I had no idea. Judging by the deluge of commnets looks like you hit the nail on the head around here Shirley.
Thank you for efforts on this blog. Great work.
Mon. Your fan.
Wonderful Hub - and very helpful. Thanks! :)
Good one Shirley. A question if I may. Is the writer's guide only good for the U.S. and do you know of a European writers guide perhaps?
I have added your hub to my favorites. Great information, thanks! :)
Kanelbullar - there is indeed a Writer's Market for the U.K. I haven't seen it, but it looks like the same format as the American version. I'm on vacation so I don't have my U.S. copy with me to confirm if there are any U.K. markets listed, it has Canadian and U.S. for sure.
I'm going to try pasting the link to the U.K. version, not sure if it will work or not, but I got it by Googling European Writer's Market. If it's anything like the one I use, you'll love it.

Shirley
EVERYBODY - thank-you so much for your comments! I'm glad I could be helpful. :)
GREAT HUB, I just became a fan!
Thank-you, Lady Luck!
lots of info thanks
nice hub.. the sites for writers were great..thanks for sharing
Hi Shirley,
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I hope that I can return the favor at some time with information from one of my Hubs. I look forward to reading more of your work.
Thank you,
Joe
Wonderful hub Shirley! I am in the process of changing careers and seriously looking at ways to make an income writing-so this is very helpful. Thanks and I look forward to reading your other articles.
Great information!
Thank-you, everyone! I'm glad I could help fulfill your writing goals.
Thank you for sharing your lists of writing sites. Do you really make money writing? That's great!
Laurie B.
Hi Shirley--this is a fabulous round-up--how did I miss it the first time around? Well now I've bookmarked it for if and when I decide to stick my toe back into free lance waters LOL I too used to use Writers Digest back in the day, but don't have my old copies anymore but it was and prolly still is a very useful resource. A belated thumbs up from me.
Yes Laurie, I do make money at it, always have. The difference now is that I'm doing it full-time. I will admit to you though that I still have a ways to go before I'm flush doing it. Business is steadily increasing though, which is very exciting. When I get a repeat customer, I feel like my work is good.
Right now, I'm not charging as much as I should (for online), but once I feel fully established with a good base, that will start changing. Online writing does not pay nearly as well as print. I try to make sure that I'm doing both.
You also write for profit, don't you?
Great Information thanks
You're welcome, Steve. I use some of the links on a regular basis and get article writing jobs from them. You have to check them regularily to find the exact opp you're looking for sometimes, but if you're persistent you'll find it.
Good luck.
I'm happy to find a convenient resource like this. I just joined HubPages to iron out a little of the kinks in my writing! Been stuck in various graduate schools for a number of years now, so my writing has gotten a little... specific, dry, technical? But I will definitely be checking back in with you when I feel it's time to publish a couple of my short stories, and novel I'm wrapping up!
Also, thanks for the comment. I get sick and tired of movie reviews just detailing the plot and listing the actors and actresses. I feel a well-written review is hard to come by these days, so I do my best!
Your writing doesn't seem rusty at all. Quite the contrary, I found it engaging. You certainly gave a fine example of a terrific review.
Feel free to come on back here anytime, the links will be waiting for you.
Since we are fellow Canucks, would you recommend I get the Canadian edition of the Writers Market or would you suggest I get the US one? Or both...
To be honest, Susan, my copy of the Canadian Writer's Market is from 1994. At that time it didn't have nearly as many listings as the American version, but had some advice in it, so I still have it in the basement. Currently, I only use the U.S. 2007 one....it has international listings as well.
If you're sending submissions via mail, you can get international reply coupons from the post office to send along, so you can get a mailed response.
Sorry I'm not more help to you about this. :(
Thank you! Amazingly good and extensive work and so very useful.
You're very welcome, Solarshingles! I hope it helps you.
Awesome Hub!! You are right, so many places to go and so little time.
Thanks, Dora! I appreciate your comment.
I have to agree. This is an awesome hub with sooo many useful links. It will be taking me quite the while to be sorting through them. It is nice to know there are so many opportunities out there to make some real money instead of some of the rates some clients try to ask for.
I finally feel like I may be able to make a full time living doing what I love to do best.
thank you
Dear Shirley
Thanks for this hub. I have spent so many hours trawling the net getting square eyes I thought I'd found every possible market site, or that's how it seemed. The excitement I got when I saw a big list of mostly new ones was quite tragic!
I would add freelancewritinggigs.com to your list, as I find this site to be one of the quickest off the mark, and I often have daily/weekly lists of already-viewed links from other sources due to this one site.
Thanks again
Sam
Ebookshack - if you truly want to write full-time, you will do it. Believe it, it will happen. I did it and you can too.
Good luck, let me know if I can help.
Shirley
Sam - thank-you for the tip! I use freelancewritinggigs from time to time, and I like it as well. I am definitely going to have to do another hub on this subject. I've been getting some really great suggestions that I can add the rest of my list.
Great! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the Hub! Great information. I also have used Yhe Writer's Market. But I will check out some of your other suggestions.
You're very welcome. Someday, when I get a lull in freelance jobs, I will do another hub with some more links.
I'm a testament to these working....I've gotten projects and steady gigs from using these links. Hope they are as good for all of you.
Looks like I will be following your suggestions along with many others. Thanks Shirley.
C.S. Alexis - you're welcome, good luck with placing your work.
Hi,thanks you were queit helpful.. i was not aware of all these sites... the question i want to ask do they really pay
Thanks, Nashomega. Re whether or not the sites pay....it is a bit difficult to answer that question in a word since most of above sites lead to a list of markets. I can tell you that I've not had any problems thus far in any of my dealings.
There are sites that publish warnings about publishers to watch out for....too many to list here, but this is one of the ones I use:
http://www.writersweekly.com/whispers_and_warnings
People who have had trouble with a publisher submit complaints.
Good luck with your submitting, and let me know if I can be of any more help.
Shirley :)
Now this is the sort of article I'm interested in. I already do a lot of translation work (French to English and German to English) but if I could also add to my toolbox by writing on a freelance basis, I think that would bring me a lot of enjoyment.
Thank you for bringing this list of sites together.
Check out my blog at http://adsensestrategiesadsense.wordpress.com
You're very welcome! Thank-you for commenting. I hope this article helps you.
Shirley - I am a fan and this is going on my favorites list. I'm SO glad you decided to return to writing - you have a gift!
Barbara
Why Barbara, you are so very kind, thank-you an absolute ton!
Good hub! I love to write. Although I am always writing an article or hub, or working on a book. I would like to pursue some other avenues.
This gives me some ideas that I had not thought of.
I also know of a screenwriter who may be interested in some of the sites you have listed.
Thanks again!
Hi Sandilyn: I'm glad this article gave you some ideas, and can perhaps help your friend, too. I love that it may contribute to some writers getting their work in print regardless of venue, and for the first time for some.
Best of luck to both you and your screenwriter friend. Please let us know if anything here helped - it would be great inspiration for others.
Thx, Sandilyn!
Shirley :)
thanks! i'm adding this to my favorites.
Thank-you, MOmmagus! Hope it is helpful.
Brilliant hub, thanks for the lovely info, right I'm off to build a writing career, right this minute. cheers!
:) Glad to help!
Really enjoyed this, I think I have a writer's market from the 1980's, I know I have some of their magazines from the 1960's . I actually have one with an interview with Hemingway. Man, how things have changed. You could probably do a dozen hubs on this topic and not run out of juice. Well done.
By the way I saw Stephen King's "On Writing" adverised on your site. I have three copies and heartily recommend it to anyone who just wants to see how someone else got there.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, MHMoore! Wow! You have a Hemingway interview...tell me, is it as cool as it sounds?
Yes, things have certainly changed, and yes, I could probably write these kinds of hubs until I go blind, there is just no end to the resources. They are very time consuming though, especially the ones I don't normally deal with. I have to familiarize myself with the site, at least enough to comment on it.
I also have a copy of "On Writing" (but only 1). I love it, have reread it, probably will again. It's entertaining as well as educational.
Thx for stopping by and leaving a comment!
Good informative article! Thanks ...
I saw this today and wanted to send this appreciation. But ,perhaps you need anymore! what all I wanted to tell, has already been told by my friends,Thank YUUUUUUUUUUU vvvvvery much.LOL
Thank-you so much, Prasadjain! Yes, there are enough sources that I could do a few more hubs on this subject matter. They're time consuming though, and I haven't had enough time to devote to it yet.
Wow, where did you get all these info? Do you have anymore sites to show?
Yes, there are more. I haven't done another hub on them because of other time commitments, but I do plan to at some point.
I am a graduate student working on a MS degree. One of my goals is to continue on to earn a Ph. D. Many institutions look favorably upon published works when considering applications.
I will certainly check out the sources you mention here because I love to write and would like write some articles on my chosen specialty.
Thank you very much!
You're welcome, Dumbledore! Good luck with your writing and achieving your goal!
This is amazing information; you could have charged for it I think. So much talent from Canada...I can hardly wait to explore these sites. A sincere thank you!
You are very welcome, KKPetit, and thank-you for the compliment. I hope these links are helpful to you.
These sites are awesome. How you do so much research before creating a precious hub is always a question in my mind. However, you know how to play with the links and what to write so that it should become valuable on the net. I not only like your style but love it too. Thanks for the useful information.
Thank-you so much London_Guide! The research had an easy start as I already knew about some of these sites, then became more challenging only because it takes a great deal of time to compile and find new ones. There seemed to be a need for this type of hub though, and I love being helpful. I'm going to try and do another one soon, there are sooo many of these types of resources.
This is an incredible hub Shirley.
Now if I could only get you to stop playing "I'm the winner" and write something about The Beatles. We used to talk all the time...on hubs. Miss You.
Awww, DJ, thx!
Great, great Shirley...both hubs of "Places to Sell Your Writing" are very informative and deftly organized. Thank you so much. I'm bookmarking your hubs so I can go back again and again and explore the links. Now, I'm going to check out other hubs of yours....
Best regards, Helen Borel, your New York City Fan...P.S. I wrote two new hubs the other day, one "Neediness Hurts"; the other "Overcoming Neediness" at my hub group http://hubpages.com/hub/PSYCH-NEW-YORK If you have time, any feedback you can give me about these would be terrific....Helen
very informative for fiction writers and non fiction writers. The screen writers who write dialogues for movies they can also search from the sites which are available here. These sites will help screen writers to effectively write the dialogues to the movies. The interesting site I found among is www.writingscripts.com.
Hi Helen, thank-you for the great compliment! I will definitely read your hubs, am looking forward to it a lot, I'm just behind at the moment. Now that I can't get caught up in the Last Post forum, I should be able to be more productive and get a lot more hubs read.
Giggzu, thank-you for letting everyone know about the writingscript site. I am not a screewriter (though have ambitions down the road), but in looking for markets, I found them to be mostly pay sites when I could find them at all. It must be very tough for them. Thx for reading and commenting.
GREAT HUB SHIRLEY
Thx, Teddy!
I LOVE my Writer's Market!! :D
...now hopefully it'll get me somewhere, lol.
Me too, Taryn! You know, only a writer can fall in love with a publication like that. It will get you somewhere, don't worry. Keep working at it, and be brave enough to keep submitting. Thx for coming by, Taryn.
Great list of links. I've bookmarked this page!
Thx, 01SmithA! I hope you find it helpful.
This was some really great info....thanks
Raguett, no thank-you!
Clearly this hub has become a favorite to many people--and no wonder, it is packed with useful information. I'm adding it to my "favorites." Thanks!
Why thank-you very much, Saralise! I look forward to seeing some of your writing published.
Dear Shirley, The writing markets have many facets, you have written about some of the good places you have used or found.
As always I love your words.
Thank-you, MSMS. I hope that you can find something here that is of help to you.
Very good hub! It takes a great deal of time to sift through all these sites, but it would be something promising to do.
Thx, SweetiePie!
Yes, there a ton of links for writers. This is just the tip of the iceberg, too.
Excellent hub with a lot of great resources!
Thank-you, Karen! Hope they can be of help to you.
Thanks Shirley, this was more informative than the book was!!! lol Hope all is well for you.
LOL, Cheryle. I'm so happy to see you! Yes, all is pretty well, and I wish you the same.
Any word from the editors?
Thx, Cheryle!
Thank you for the comment and great hub. I am an aspiring writer so this information is very useful. I have applied to jobs on freelancewritingjobs.com but so far no luck. I need to work on writing samples and I decided that hubpages is a good place to start doing that!
Kumichan, practising here on HubPages is a great idea! You can also direct people to your hubs to view your writing. Practise and polish them up, then use them to get jobs.
There really are an absolute ton of freelancing opp sites. Don't give up easily and it will pay off for you.
Very best of luck, and thanks so much for commenting.
Great information, I just added it to my favorites. Thanks :)
Thx, Jonesj64! I hope it is of some help to you.
I have bookmarked this one. Thanks for the links, Carol :-)
Thank-you, Carol!
Great information shirley. I am only two months here on Hubpages and I like the site very much. You can find valuable information like the kind of writing you had here. My congratulations.
Welcome to HP, Scorpionmagnet! It is a great writing community.
Thank-you very much for your comment. I hope these links will help you.
Such a great resource. It can be discouraging to many writers today, what with budgets and time and competition. Thanks for the hope!
Thx, Glassvisage! I truly do hope that those who want to make writing their life's work never, ever give up. If it's your passion, you'll find your way if you keep at it.
Thx for your comment.
I also follow freelancewritinggigs.com, a compilation of jobs&gigs, very useful.
Nice article!
Yes, I've seen freelancewritinggigs in search engine results before, have have never checked them out. There are an absolute ton of resources for writers out there, it can be overwhelming. It's great to hear from someone who has had experience with a site.
Thanks so much for contributing, Elijah!
Has anybody noticed the word tool above the Share it/thumbs bar? I believe those words and definitions rotate daily.
To be a professional writer I would have to learn it. Unlike blogs where I tend to just write without bothering about grammar, style or content. Can you suggest any good online course or books?
If you're serious about the professional part, then you need a professional teacher. That's not to say that you couldn't take a nightschool course or something like that, because you could. Some colleges and universities offer online courses.
There are places like Writer's Digest, Long Ridge Writer's Group, there's another one, but I've been sitting here trying to think of it and I can't. Anyway, they have courses you can buy, but they have freebie stuff that can help you. Forums, newsletters, communications that hook you up with other writers and professional writers.
Long Ridge Writer's Group has writing exercises that you can take part in. A pro critiques it for you - free. You can also get your book reviewed for free.
This sounds like a hub I should do.
Thx Countrywomen! If I think of that other name, I'll post it here for you.
WOW!! Thanks Shirley. Thats quite a lot of info. I will surely check out the info. Looking forward to read more of your wonderful blogs.
You're welcome, Countrywomen! I hope it helps you.
I should probably do a hub on this topic as they may be others with the same question. I'm going away for the weekend, but when I get back, I'll start working on one.
I'm glad you asked, thx.
A hub! Oh, yes please! I'm interested!
You got it, sir....as soon as I return from a weekend with 2 of my kids.
Kids? I thought you were waaaay too young for that! Enjoy your weekend, I'm goin' back to the zoo!
Or perhaps you were referring to baby goats.
Oh B.T. <giggle> you flatterer!
Stay away from the elephants!
A wealth of information. Thanks
You're welcome, Flutterbug. Thx for commenting!
Great article, Shirley! I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but Women-On-Writing is a great website, as is Funds for Writers.
Hi Annabelle. No, no one has mentioned either of those yet, thanks so much for sharing them! I'm sure they'll help.
Thx also for coming by and commenting.
great Hub! thanks for the info... I have been using the writers' market for sometime now and I find it priceless!
Thank-you, Sony.....and YAY!, another Writer's Market fan.
I have been writing poetry since 3rd grade and at some point I plan to start publishing some of my nonfictional work. Thanks for giving me a guideline to work with. You're fabulous!
Thank-you, Imani! That's very kind of you.
You have poetry in your blood - your gift to the world. I'm sure you will be able to get it published, as well as your non-fiction work. Whatever you do, don't give up on that if it's what you want.
Hope this hub was able to help.
Thank you very much. Great Hub.
That's a very useful and interesting hub! I had no idea there were so many resources available. Thanks a lot for the information.
Thanks for all this great information, Shirley. I'm going to go through them all, then I'll move on to part 2. Thanks so much for sharing these sites. You're a doll!
Brilliant hub Shirley - I have been buying the Australian Writer's Market for years - never published anywhere but have taken the plunge here on hubpages. Have reams of poetry to publish but I notice that it isn't as well received as fiction here (on hp) , so maybe I should try anpther avenue - what do you think? (environ. stuff) cheers and thanks for your terrific work. cheers
This is a great page and I will be very busy following up on all of that advice, thank you very much for your wonderful insight.
Its very great hub. Thanks for sharing valuable information. I had visited your hub its very interesting.
@Candace - thank-you! I hope there is something here that will be of help.
@Moon Daisy - there are a kazillion more such sites. Someday, when I get a minute, I'll do more of them. I like putting these kinds of hubs together, but they take quite a bit of time to read the details of each one. Thx for coming by and reading.
@Christoph - no, thank-YOU! I really hope there is something in one of my hubs that is useful to you. You shouldn't have any problem at all selling your work once you find the appropriate marketplace.
@Ajcor - I did a hub on places to sell poetry. There were quite a few sites that I came across while doing the research, but the pay seemed very poor to me, and some only paid in anthology copies. Environmental topics seem to be very big these days, you can probably do very well in that arena. Thx for reading!
@Mireland19 - thanks so much! I hope it helps you.
@Nancydodds1 - well, thank-you for reading my information!
Good luck, writers! There's lots of work out there, it's just a matter of finding the right place. Jeez, I made that sound easy, didn't I? :)
Very informative hub.
Thank-you, Nikkorh. Hope it helps you somehow.
Today i visited this hub once again and read it afresh. Again felt glad.Perhaps this is your most appreciated hub-it seems. It deserves that.
Thank-you, Prasadjain! I really appreciate your kind words. It is my hope that this hub is helpful to a lot of people. I love to encourage writers.
I like helpful and informative hubs. thanks for sharing to the world your expertise. ;-)
You're very welcome, Mel. Thank-you for coming by!
Thank you Shirley. I have a friend that aspires to become a paid writer. I will send him this hub to read. Very informative!
There is so much good information on hubpages! It is a great resource for people and your entries are certainly a great addition.
You will see me as one of your newest fans!
Wow! I never knew all this was out there. I thought I was familiar with the internet and I'm finding out real quick that I know nothing! Thanks for the education.
You're welcome, RGraf! This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are TONS of resources and potential markets for writers. I have plans to do more of these in future, I just haven't gotten to them yet as they are quite time consuming.
Thx for coming by and commenting, I appreciate it!
Thanks for the info on your hub. I am currently writing a self help/motivational book on overcoming alcoholism and will need ideas for submission. I have used a writers guide from the library a couple of times, but your links will help give me other options. Thanks again check out my hubs sometimes if you get a chance.
http://hubpages.com/hub/EncouragementForLife
Have a great day
James "Scott" Murphy
Hi Scott (I assume that's why it's in quotes?). It's exciting that you're working on a book! The above resources deal more with articles and short stories, but there are plenty of calls for submissions with book publishers.
I will check out your hubs.
Thanks for coming by! Very best of luck with your book!
I apologize if this was brought up in one of the comments above, but there were so many to read through, I must admit I skipped a few. The Writers Market book is an excellent source of information and I just wanted to remind folks that a great time to pick up a copy is when libraries are switching them out for the new year. I got mine for next to nothing on Ebay. All you have to do with an old copy is just verify a few details that can usually be found online and save yourself tons of money and time.
Hi KCC - thanks for the tip! I know that used book stores sometimes have them, but I think that they'd be cheaper from the library or eBay. And no, it was not brought up before, so it's great that you mentioned it.
If anybody wants to buy my mint condition, vintage 1994 copy, just let me know. :)
Thanks again for helping out with that information, KCC!
I enjoy writing when i'm not busy(which is rare), but this hub was very helpful....thanks for the information
Thank-you, Mr. Williams. I'm glad you were able to come by. Now, I'm going to check your profile as I've not seen it before and I'm curious about your avatar. :)
This is a treasure trove of a hub, Shirley! It's a writer's resource. I have bookmarked it. I'm thanking the Universe for this great hub. I am your fan. If you find the time whenever that time will be, please visit my page here at hubpages...franciaonline
Thank-you, Franciaonline!! I'd be more than happy to visit your hubpages. Hope these lists are helpful to you.
Wow very comprehensive list thanks for sharing the info.
Thank-you, Mr. Nice! Hope these writing gig links can help you.
very useful info. Do you still use the sites you mentioned for your work.
Thank-you, Yokalyan. Yes, the non-fiction ones, I do. I also scan sites kijiji. I don't use the sites where the writers have to bid on jobs, though. Another place to pick up work is forums. It takes time, forum members have to get to know you first, but they will hire you to write articles for them.
Hope this hub helps you.
Wow! That was incredibly helpful! Thank you. <3
useful hub
Great Hub
Thank-you, Marble! Hope it helps!
Thanks, Lgali and bgpapa.
Shirley, thank you so much. The information in your article was invaluable.
I'm just starting my freelance career, and I've been stumbling into walls with the lights off. Thanks for flipping on the wall switch, grabbing me by the shoulders, and pushing me into the right direction with your article. I have a feeling I will be publishing in no time, due in part to your help!
Thanks again!
Molly aka Mother Hubber/MomZof3
Hi, Molly! Aw, shucks, thanks.
I really hope that this hub is of some help to you! There's no doubt about it, there's a lot of competition these days, but you can still find work. It sometimes takes a lot of digging through job lists, but it's there.
Kijiji and Craigslist are also sources of freelance gigs. I have found work on kijiji, but not nearly as often as other places. Still, I watch and read and occasionally find a job or two. Also, I post ads on kijiji and have gotten some good paying work that way.
Best of luck in your career start! If I can help, let me know.
Fantastic advice.I am going to check these sites out when I have some time. Thanks
Thanks, Blondepoet. Hope they'll be of some help.
I'm definitely going to have to bookmark some of these sites. Then I'll have to actually sit down and get some of my writing done.
I have the same problem sometimes, Ts1969. Lots of places to submit, just have to get something done so I can.
Glad this has proved useful for you. Thanks for commenting!
thanks for the information, very useful indeed
Thank-you, Solarcaptain!
Thanks Shirley - really comprehensive list. So many writing outlets, so little time!
Ain't it the truth, Karen! Boy, if I could write an article or story a minute, I'd be rolling in dough.
Thanks for coming by, Karen!
This is quite a resource; I really appreciate it.
Thanks, EyeAm4Anarchy! Hope it helps.
As always, super info, Shirley. Thanks for writing this. Easy to follow, great sections, very useful resource.
Thanks, Frieda! I tried and hoped for the best. :) Glad you found it useful!
By the way, every time I see your profile pic, I want to grab that poor woman's leg and pull her back to safety! :0
Lots of really good info, I almost didn't finish reading so I could visit some of the sites but, I reined myself in.
Glad there was lots here for you, Kabney! You can come on back any time you want. There is also a part 2 and a one for poetry, if you want to check them out.
Good luck with selling your work!
what about writing for skit comedy? Any ideas?
you have to be funny first.
@goldentoad - lol
hahahaha..HA! That would be a good idea I suppose. Thanks for setting me straight. ** cries quietly inside **
Don't cry Pest, I'm sure everynow and then you can bring the 'funny' ;)
Awww, now you guys have gone and hurt Pest's feelings! I just hope you haven't driven him to momma for comforting (ewwww! scabs, flakes, bleck!).
I'll see if I can't find you some kind of market for that, Pest. Chin up l'il comedy writer. Here's a tissue.
I am looking for a publisher right now. This might help me. Thank you.
I hope it does help you, Under The Veil! Good luck in your quest for a publisher.
Hi Shirley
I'm for a vintage copy of the Writers Market if it's free and I just pay for postage.
Cheers
Brendan
Hi, Godfactauthor! Well, I'm still using my 2007, but I have a hard cover 1994. Not sure how much good that is to you. I'm using to put under a lamp at the moment, although I do still peruse the articles in it now and again.
I also have the 1994 Canadian Writer's Market, the 1996 Writer's Handbook...if it's old, I've got it!
You can also get used copies from Amazon for $1.94 of the 2008 edition.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1582974969?ie=UTF
The reason I mentioned Amazon is because if you buy the $5.94 (or whatever it is) one, you get free shipping or something.
You're in Australia or N.Z or that part of the world, aren't you? I'm in Canada.
Great information. Lots of good links to source. Very helpful. Thanks for the great hub.
You're very welcome, Lafenty! Hope they help you sell some of your writing!
shirley, great information, thanks for all the links
You're welcome, Dolores. Thank-you, hope it helps you sell some of your writing.

Thank-you, G.Uriarte. Hope it helps!
Not only a hub of places to sell writing, but for me a hub to find good writeers. Thanks
I'm glad that you found some good stuff here, H.I. I hope it helps you. Thanks for commenting.
This is a great list of writing resources. Out of curiosity do you know much about the proofreading industry? My daughter is an english major and would love to get small jobs proofreading books, etc.
Hi, Erick. I've done proofreading and editing, but it was offered to me so I didn't have to look for the jobs. In other words, what I'm about to say is not from my experience scouting proofing assignments, just what occurs to me to try.
Some of the links above have assignments for proofreaders/editors. She can also post a portfolio on at Freelance Portfolios (it's free- the link is above). I've also seen ads calling for proofreaders on Craigslist and Kijiji. There are even sites that use proofreaders just for online work. A bit of a search should turn up opportunities for her. She could even keep an eye out on print publisher sites.
If I had more time right now, I'd do a hub on proofreading jobs for you, but I'm afraid I can't at the moment.
Good luck to your daughter. I'm sure she can find something. Thanks for your question.
Thanks for the input!
Hey, Erick! You're welcome. Hope it helps.
Very informative indeed. Thanks for this.
Thank-you, JPSO! Hope it helps you sell some writing.
What a great list...so thorough. Thanks
Thank-you, Stephen. Hope it can help you sell some writing.
Hello, my 28th fan, boy those are what I call comments
Hello, Katy! Yeah, there are quite a few comments, aren't there? Hubs about selling writing are pretty popular, I guess.

Great compilation of places to submit writing pieces! A writer can always use a few new links :)
Thanks, Ashley. Hope their is a nugget of writing selling gold here for you.
SCAM ALERT: The Writer's Literary Screenplay Agency is a notorious scammer, and they exists only to take your money. I suggest you take these clowns off your list. Otherwise, lots of good info here!!
Oh no, L.A. Screenwriter! Thank-you for alerting me to that. I'm going to remove them from the list right now!
Hope there was something else here that was helpful to you. I've noticed that there are not nearly so many freely advertised screenwriter's markets.
A great resource for writers. Am bookmarking this, thanks.
Thanks, Melody! Hope it helps you sell some of your writing!
Well i am def. late on reading this one. Great tips and will check some of them out!

Excellent info I subscribe to Writers Market
Thank, GC. Good luck with selling your writing. Since you subscribe to Writer's Market, I assume that you are a fiction writer?
Thanks so much this is great information, and useful to!
Thank-you, Rebecca. I hope it helps you to sell your writing!
Awesome information--I've got my homework marked out for me.
Do you think it's better to focus on online writing with the printed world slowly phrasing out?
Why, thank-you, Anginwu!
It's true that the print market has changed drastically in the past few years. However, rather than put your eggs all in one basket, you may want to work both mediums. You will make more money that way, too. Offline magazines and newspapers tend to pay higher than online venues. Besides, it's good to have connections and options and many publications have a webzine to complement their print mag.
I hope this helps you. Best of luck selling your writing!
Wow, that's a lot of commentin'!!
I just wanted to add my two cents and say thanks for a great article. I have already bookmarked it, and will be referring to it often. Thanks for all the info!

Vizey, it's always great to hear that another writer has joined us here on HP. You're right about the struggle part, freelancing writing is hard work and long hours. I hope this hub makes things a little easier for you to sell your work. Thanks for reading.
Welcome, Rebekah! You're very welcome for the fanning and for these lists. It can be tough enough to find assignments with some direction but a whole lot harder without it. Hope you find a profitable home for some of your work as a result of reading this. Thanks for coming by.
Thanks so much for the wannabe's nod. You are a great resource to new writers Shirley. I'll keep this page bookmarked.

Thanks, Sheryl! Hope it helps you sell your writing, or leads you to places where you can.
wow great. it almost complete.Thank you for the info.
Thank-you, Akuchey. Hope it helps.
Wow. I'm impressed. I've found another person who has actually been published in print! I am amazed. I think some of the people here don't even know people write for "print" anymore.
WSP, yes it's hard to find print authors anymore. It's a shame because it is so thrilling to see your byline in a paper or magazine. Unfortunately, a lot of people have missed out on that.
Considering how fast print publications are disappearing, that may not turn around any time soon. Still, I remain hopeful.
Thank-you for your comment.
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Duotrope! There are a ton of publications on there, including my favorite daily flash fiction site (www.weirdyear.com) !
This is a really great hub, Shirley! Dead-on super advice for writers. Congrats!
Amanda, I did not know about Duotrope! I must check it out and add it here, thank-you!

A fantastic collection of resources to explore. I've never tried freelancing but with a comprehensive list like this one, I may be emboldened enough to give it a try. Nice work!
Wayne, thank-you. Yes, it does take a while, which is why I only wrote two of these hubs. Someday, when I actually have that ever-evasive thing called time, I would like to do another one.
I hope there's something here that helps you sell your writing, Wayne.
Thanks for your kind comment.

I have to agree that The Writer's Market is quite valuable! Certain (more expensive) editions also include a one-year membership to their website, which has tons of additional resources, so I use both :) Great hub, lots of new stuff for me to look at!
