PULSE RATE

Definition

• It is the expansion of the arterial walls occurring with each ventricular contraction.

Special Consideration

• One complete rise and fall of the arterial wall is considered one beat.

• Take a pulse at as convenient site for the patient.

• Do not take the pulse when the patient is restless and when crying.

Normal Values

                            Infant             Child             Adult

Respiration         40-60             20-40                12-18 breaths/min.

Pulse                 140-160          120-140             60/100 beats/min.

Blood Pressure                         80-60                 120/80 mm/hg
