Pubic Lice Treatment

Pubic lice has got to be one of the creepy-crawliest nasties you can get on your body and you don't have to be sexually active to get it. You can pick crab lice up from sheets and towels if you come in contact with them after an infested person used them. Pubic lice is less common these days than it used to be, due to metrosexuals and women alike popularizing bikini waxing and other hair removal modalities, but it still exists. And you needn't have pubic hair to get it, either -- pubic lice can live on your thighs, eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits and more. If you're unfortunate enough to get pubic lice one way or another, this is how you get rid of them:

• Step 1: Scrub up
  

  Wash the infested area with your normal soap and water and then dry yourself off with a towel.

• Step 2: 1% permethrin lotion or mousse
  

  Your crab lice killing product should contain 1% permethrin, pyrethrins or piperonyl butoxide. This can be in the form of a mousse, lotion or shampoo. Your particular product will tell you exactly how long to leave it on for and it will tell you how and when to remove it.
  
  NOTE: These products are not intended for removal of lice and nits from eyelashes and eyebrows and other facial areas! If you can remove these by hand you will need a doctor's prescription for a special ointment so see your general practitioner asap.

• Step 3: Nit Removal
  

  The medication will kill the crabs themselves but you'll need to remove most of the nits (eggs) manually. You can do this by hand with a nit comb or you can use your fingernail or you can shave the area.

• Step 4: Repeat these steps in 9-10 days if you still have pubic lice symptoms.

If you've been intimate with anyone they'll need to be treated as well and you should avoid any kind of intimate contact until you're absolutely sure that your infestation has been quelled. You'll want to clean all the clothing, towels and bedding you and other infected persons came into contact with during the previous 3 or 4 days -- wash them in hot water and dry them in the dryer. Also, if you've acquired crab lice via a partner you may want to have yourself checked for STDs just to be on the safe side.
