Ravaged Brambles

We had a black berry bush at the end of the lane
He and the children took what they could reach
The bush enjoyed the visitors
And the array of berry stained smiles
Her fruit was nothing to herself
Until it nourished another
A relationship formed beneficial
To both bush and bee
Winged ones would feast on what
The earthbound could not even see
Berries and thorns entwined
Guaranteed those of greed would bleed
Time and again all came to disappointment when
She had nothing left to give
One night a black bear came
Tore her from the hill
Raked every sweetness from her
Left, a pile of ravaged brambles
She died back, broken, black and rotting
Or so it seemed till spring
Rising strong from those same roots
A lush and lovely bush
Heavy with sweet fruit,
Once more ripe for the picking
