Writing romance- publishers and their guidelines

the joy of writing romance fiction is that in today’s market, publishers are looking for wide variety of  genres, from paranormal, mystery’s ,thrillers, sci f, suspense and the traditional historical romance.

So it’s even more important than ever to know what publishers are looking for. I believe its more than a good idea to research the guidelines of a few publishers before sitting down and starting your novel, this gives you a good idea on what publishing houses are buying, helping your chances of getting your novel read beyond your cover page.

Writing Romance

Despite the genre that you are aiming your romance novel too, all romance publishers are looking for the same thing in your novel.

Love Story

The central plot of your book has to revolve around a love story, two people meeting, falling in love and their struggles to make it work, weave in as many subplots as you need, remembering that it’s a love story first and last

Emotional satisfying ending

Readers and publishers of romance novels look for an emotional satisfying ending, where the lovers who have struggled and overcome all obstacles are rewarded with unconditional love and some sort of emotional justice

Happily ever after is a strong theme in single romance books, while happily ever after for now works well in serials.

Below are just a few publishers and their guidelines to get you started, at the moment I have listed the ones that will take submissions without the need for an agent.

Dorchester Publisher

Looking for historical, paranormal, modern, and Fantasy romance genres and so much more.

A leader in the romance market, also looking for horror and westerns

Harlequin

One of the most recognizable names in romance, they publish more than mills and boons, covering silhouette, Steeple hill, Mira, Nocturne bites plus more

Below are their submission guidelines for the many different genres that they publish. A great page that is well worth a look

 Avon

This is a subsidiary of harper Collins with a well-respected name in the romance industry; it has a great site, with the submission guidelines easy to understand,

 Kensington publishing

a Great publishing company that covers more than just romance, with each editor and their genres clearly outlined in the submission pages.

Wild rose press

A Publisher that does both eBooks and traditional paperbacks, with a wide genre selection it may be worth considering.

Amber Press

Submitting manuscripts here unsolicited will result in them being deleted, BUT it is worth checking back to their submission pages, for they do post calls for submissions, there is a link on the submission page that takes you to what they are looking for, as this theme changes it is as I said well worth checking back with them from time to time.

This is just a few of the many different publishing houses that we as writers can submit our work to, its well worth your time to research the publishing’s houses that are right for you. One of the ways that I do this is by looking at my bookcase, then researching the publishing houses that my own favorite authors have written for.

there are some publishing houses that won’t look at your work unless you are represented by an agent. (Orbit, Atom and Penguin just to name a couple)

Being new to publishing world myself I have kept this starting list to those that will accept your submission by snail mail or email.

Good luck and happy writing
