Roommate Rants::Asian Americans
Asians in Hollywood
Ah, yes, another roommate rant. If you tuned into the first article then you caught a glimpse of how bizarre my roommate thinks.
If this is your first time reading one of these rants, then you are in for a treat. This particular piece will deal with Asians and my roommate’s disgust with Hollywood.
Okay, so one day we were discussing movies, in particular, hot ‘chicks’ and their association with heroes. The hero or leading role is usually a male actor like Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson, Leonardo Dicapro, Van Dissel, and list goes on and on...
Anyway these actors, whenever they star in an action film, are not only paired with hot chicks but they end up in bed with them. And then my roommate stopped short and simply replied,
"This rule applies to everyone, except for Asians.I mean, what’s the deal with that? Jack Chan...nope. Jet Li...nope...Brandon Lee...nope....Bruce Lee...nope. And I’m not talking about those films made in Hong Kong, I’m specifically targeting Hollywood!"
It’s true, you never see, Jackie Chan’s character end up with any female characters even though he has been paired with beautiful actresses such as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Roselyn Sanchez, and Lucy Liu (who’s Asian, by the way!). Next, there's Jet Li. Again my roommate is correct. Although Jet Li’s character had ample opportunities with Bridget Fonda in Kiss of the Dragon, nothing ever materialized.
Asian American Guys
My roommate continues.
"Yet, on the flip side, you have Tom Cruise who stars in a movie called the Last Samurai and ends up with the Japanese chick at the end of the movie. I mean, what the HELL! The movie is called the Last SAMURAI, and Hollywood has a white guy fall in love with a Japanese woman. Are you serious? And talk about white guys replacing well deserved Asian guys roles, what the hell was with Dragon Evolution?? How do you have a white guy play Goku? Outrageous!"
It's all funny stuff, but do you know what? He is right. Asian guys are performing crazy stunts, they save the day, and they are the star. Why can’t these heroes get a piece of the action? James Bond and Indiana Jones always get the hot chick. So why can't Chief Inspector Lee from Rush Hour or Han Sing from Romeo Must Die get the honey?
I don’t even know what to call it. Is it discrimination? It is absurd stereotyping? I mean, do beautiful women find Asians that repulsive? It’s really insane if you think about it.
