This is the Second Installment of a Series of videos I will be putting out to uncover the greatest Samples and Break Beats in Hip-Hop History. I will be honoring the original artists whose work has allowed a whole generation to get their funk on all over again. From P-Funk to G-Funk and beyond...

Nice samples! FYI Daydream in Blue is already a cover of the song Daydream by Wallace Collection, belgian pop group of the 60-70's. It was covered recently by I Monster, but also by the french singer Claude Francois with the song "Rêverie".
You forgot the classic "Amen Break" from The Winstons' 1969 single Amen, Brother. It's easily one of, if not the most sampled break in hip hop and many other genres.

The answer to that one Deuce is "Love's Gonna Get You Baby" by Jocelyn Brown which was written by Tony Coleandro.

I’ve discovered you on YouTube by chance the other day and I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your videos (I think I’m up to No.6). When I was a young lad of 17, one of the many record shops that I worked in (I got paid in records by some!) had an owner who later became a kind of musical mentor t me. He would find it most amusing whenever I pulled out a Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, BDP, Run DMC (etc.) tune and he would proceed to amaze me by going into the back and pulling out the original sample or break by some old jazz or funk dude I never heard of before. Needless to say, it left a big impression on me and it’s thanks to people like him and Hip Hop itself, that I went on to discover the likes of James Brown, The JB’s, Hank Ballard, Bobby Byrd, Sly & Family Stone, The Meters, Gil Scott Heron, Roy Ayers, Bob James etc. etc. etc….
Being an ex Funk/Soul/Hip Hop DJ and child of the early Hip Hop era (as, no doubt you know, back then it was Electro and you wasn’t anybody unless you owned a section of lino flooring [for breakin’], a “Ghetto Blaster” the size of a wardrobe [with more knobs on it than Darth Vader’s bathroom] and/or box fresh pair of Addidas/Nike/Puma, with oversized fat laces containing enough material to cloth a small family for a year!), I was under the impression that I pretty much knew all of the important breaks & samples that there was to know and I took great pleasure in smugly telling all these young kids that think Hip Hop started with Biggie & Tupac and that Puffy & Timberland are the most original producers in Hip Hop history (does anyone remember Prince Paul or The Bomb Squad?) that there is a whole heritage of music that one should experience and that all artists of today owe a debt to the pioneers that came before them. Now whilst I was familiar with most of the samples & breaks that you shared with us (probably like you, I own all of the Ultimate Breaks & Beats Vol 1-25… except for the elusive original press of Vol 8), there were still a few gems that I never knew about and I found myself franticly reaching for pen & paper and firing up Limewire quicker than you can say “Hang Up Your Hang Ups”!
This taught me that there is always more to learn and that there’s always someone out there that can teach you something new about subjects you may (naively) think you know all there is to know. And for this I humbly say thank you. Good to see there are people out there that can be bothered to keep the history alive and pass on the knowledge to a younger generation and I wish all the best of luck with your videos… and fuck, why didn’t I think of it first?

Thanks for this great comment FunkBoy73, it has been a lot of fun for me to do and while I've contemplated the hush-hush policy on sampling and I think it's a shame to leave people in the dark. If a light is not shone on this great history of funk, it will be forgotten. well..it is making a comeback of late. Movies like SEMI-PRO and SUPERBAD have been great at getting kids exposed to some funky joints.
Nobody has mentioned Nautilus by Bob James (1974). Its probably one of the most sampled songs in Hiphop!!!

Hey Funktual. Soooo good to find someone as obsessive as myself about collecting samples. I have most of the same songs you've played on MP3 and spend many happy evenings baffling my pals with the originals of all those heavily sampled songs. Some of 'em are so uneducated they thought the beats were new and couldn't believe they'd been ripped off. The Chi-Lites 'Are You My Woman' is the one that gets the best reaction. Some see it as a sad hobby but every week I find another example to impress my mates with and I'm constantly being surprised myself. I first got into collecting sampled originals as here in the UK during the late 90's and early 00's, jungle, hardcore and UK garage tunes used samples mainly from old Rare Groove songs. I guess I still have many more to discover and I'm well up for swapping any new discoveries with you. Love the clips (especially the moves). Are you sure it was non-alcoholic punch in that glass babe? x

I was blown away by that one from i monster, it sounds so much like a portishead song called glory box only difference is the strings are not used after the base line, and they slowed it down a little bit, I could be wrong but sounds a lot like thats where they found there "inspiration" for that song, def one of my favorite from them
