WHEN TO SAY NO TO YOUR BOSS
Most of us have a habit of accepting any job delegated to us from our
superior to please him/her. Whenever a task is delegated we will jump to
say "Yes Boss!" "Ok Sir/Madam!" It is a nice thing to say as long as
you are able to fulfill the obligation on time. But when you are unable
to fulfill them, your reputation gets tarnished. So isn't it wise to simply say No if you cannot.
It is understandable that you are unable to say "NO", especially if you
are a new employee striving to put yourself ahead of the competition
you face from your colleagues, or you are a obedient employee and unable
to say or never said NO to your superior/manager.
Just imagine the consequences when you are unable to complete your task.
Your superior is simply going to accuse you for not accomplishing what
you had accepted. And all the credits you earned are ultimately drowned
and not recognized. The organisation has to bear the consequences for
your mistake.
Simply, make life easy by saying "No". Its always ideal to keep track of
all your responsibilities and deadlines, and be vigilant when you
undertake new responsibilities or deadlines. Communicate politely to
your superior by discussing the responsibilities or the deadlines which
you already have, and ask his suggestion on how you would work out with
the new responsibility/deadline.
You could suggest your superior/manager to take up the task at a
future date if the task delegated is not a priority or postpone or drop
some of the existing tasks or deadline to take up the new job or
responsibility.
Its also possible that you can suggest some one in your company capable/suitable of handling the new task. This will make yours' and others' life
easy and keep you safe from unnecessary risk or stress.
Rule of a thumb: NEVER UNDERTAKE A JOB OR RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO FULFILL IT. SIMPLY SAY "NO".
