We've always known Shilpa Shetty is a pretty woman, but now we have an official endorsement from a visibly smitten Richard Gere.
At Seena Taan Ke, an AIDS awareness function organised in Delhi on Sunday to benefit truckdrivers, Gere and Shetty spoke to the vulnerable community about the dangers and misconceptions of AIDS.
Gere, looking more than a trifly dizzy, didn't seem content merely to mention that HIV can't be passed on through a kiss on the cheek -- deciding to make his point by kissing first Shilpa's hand, then hugged her, kissed her cheek, and finally bent over the surprised actress to give her a big kiss, Hollywood-style.
While Shetty laughed it off with a poised 'yeh thoda zyaada ho gaya' ('this was a bit much') to the truckdrivers, they seem to have agreed. It is reported that audiences expressed distaste at this behaviour by a visiting celebrity. Some sections of the audience are apparently asking for an apology from both actors.
Bollywood superstar Shilpa Shetty has been in films since she was a teenager, bagging awards and accolades along the way. She's a black belt karate champ and is considered to have the best body in Bollywood. She's a bit worried about the lack of gym facilities in the House.

Hello everyone. I myself am a foreigner (from the US) and have been in India for 4 years. Looking at it from both cultures, I don't think Richard Gere did it to offend anyone. I think it was a simple gesture but he should have known that it was something the Indian culture would not approve of. Again, I think it is very stupid that the media blows things out of proportion like alot of things I've seen in the past. Going to the extent of wanting to sue them over this is a little over the top. I respect everyone's belief and culture, but like someone mentioned in a previous post, there are bigger things to worry about in this country than a kiss on the cheek within two actors. So the media and the people complaining about it need to move on and relax a bit.

Well, let's weigh in on this subject: As an American who's lived and worked in India, I never forgot that I was a guest in that country. Flip the picture and imagine a male Bollywood star doing such a thing to,for example, America's sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston, live and onstage right here in the US. His behavior would be rightly classed as boorish and inappropriate. Funny about Richard though, I really would have credited him with better judgement. He could do that with Paris Hilton or someone of that ilk and no one would bat an eye....and rightly so.

As an American married to an Indian, I have had to sit through more Bollywood films than I wanted to, and while I don't remember much (not understanding Hindi kind of limited my enjoyment of the experiences) certain visual memories remain... for example I recall one where they were in the rain and the actress was lying on her back and she was arching her back and heaving her bosom violently - certainly looked sexual to me and to my rather conservative father who felt the need to leave at that point - while the actor rubbed his face all over her bosom.... I really think this kiss was nowhere near as sexual as many scenes I have seen in Indian movies and I think all the noise is just because he is a white man. I bet if it was Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan or Abishek who had done that there wouldn't be nearly as much noise about it. If you really object to such things then why don't you boycott indian movies where the girls wriggle around in some the skimpiest and trashiest looking outfits I have ever seen. And also the way he kissed her cheeks looked more like the way someone kisses a really cute child on the cheeks repeatedly - it seemed affectionate and good natured more than sexual to me.

Richard Gere has done so much for India and Tibet. We all Indians must be proud of such a compassionate person. I think Shiv Sena and RSS must be holed into jail for ever. Those rascals know only how to play political games. Mr. Gere has spent millions of dollars on promoting good image of India. I am going to see Mandala sand painting being created by Tibetan Buddhist monks at Sangamon Auditorium at Univ. of Illinois in Springfield (UIS) today. Richard Gere has sponsored that event and paid for all 9 monks to come from Karnatka state of India. That cost itself will be several thousand dollars. These monks are here to perform Tibetan orchestra, Tibetan songs, and above all they are our ambassadors.

No matter in Indian movies kiss is a very common , even they dont mind showing other parts of the body , but they face censorship too. the function was live and respect of public sentiment is necessary, they could had avoided that situation but the way he is taking kiss and holding her , it seems its highly offensive . both should come forward and apologise tp public .

I think Gere was completely wrong for violating this sacred cultural rule, but maybe he wasn't totally aware that this would create such a public outcry. I think the appropriate response would be to have someone tell him not to do that again and just demand an apology for being culturally insensitive.
What does it say about your culture to arrest a foreigner for something that is perfectly acceptable in his country. I am from america. It is commonplace here to see much more offensive behavior in public than this. I was in a shopping mall in the food court recently, and saw a couple that made me think of this kissing issue. The girl was sitting on the guy's lap, and they were making out. The amount of sexual content (not sex) in bollywood movies is disgusting. The way they dance and dress is such a bad influence on young girls and young men.
