One of the most popular styles are the over the door shoe organizers. These take advantage of the space right near the door that often is unused when the closet door is closed. In addition, they are typically not made of expensive materials like wood, and so fall in the low end of the cost range for these organizers. Similar to these in cost and construction are hanging shoe holders, which do take up space on the hanging rods in the closet.

One of the traditional solutions are the free standing shoe racks. These often hold the shoe on a small rail that puts the shoe in a vertical position and will create vertical space even on a single layer rack.

Shoe cabinets fall in the other end of the spectrum. These can be inexpensive, with simple white cabinets made of laminate over particle board, but there are also find pieces of furniture that run several hundred dollars but are the type of furniture that can be featured in the bedroom decor.

Of course many folks will use shoe organizers in other rooms of the home. You can store crafts, use them in the garage for odds and ends, or storing the kids small toys up and off the floor as well as storing their shoes.

If you really want to save money on a shoe organizer, you can even make a one from recycled cardboard. Here's a couple of videos on making your own shoe organizer. One using cardboard, the other is more traditional shelving materials.
