The signs of being pregnant vary from woman to woman and many women find themselves asking 'could I be pregnant' because the first signs of pregnancy are so varied. No two women will exhibit the same pregnant symptoms and some women can actually pass into the second trimester before any symptoms present themselves. That said, most will have an inkling within a matter of weeks – usually, missing a period is one of the first signs.

However, unless your menstrual cycle is as regular as clockwork, it can sometimes be a little tricky trying to work out if you’re pregnant – unless of course you just go right ahead and take a pregnancy test.

Signs Of Being Pregnant

Swollen Breasts

As signs of being pregnant go, this in itself doesn't indicate pregnancy. Some women suffer from swollen/tender breasts during their menstrual cycle. However, if several other symptoms present at or around the same time, swollen breasts can be classed as an early pregnancy sign. The condition is caused by increased levels of hormones surging through your body, though it can settle down once the second trimester starts.

Fatigue/tiredness

For many women, fatigue can be one of the sure pregnancy signs. A sudden onset of tiredness for no apparent reason can be a strong indication that you’re pregnant. This, for me, was a big problem with my fourth pregnancy. Within a matter of weeks, I was persistently tired. Unfortunately this continued throughout my pregnancy but some women find that it dissipates as their pregnancy progresses.

Signs Of Being Pregnant

Missed a period or two? A possible sign of pregnancy.
Nausea - a common but unpleasant symptom.

Missed Period

One of the more common and definitive pregnancy symptoms, especially for women that have been trying to become pregnant. However, it’s not an absolute – there are other reasons for a blip in our menstrual cycle so it’s advisable to take a pregnancy test. That said, if your cycle is rhythmic, and you’re in tune with your cycle, the possibility of pregnancy being the cause for a missed period is probably high.

Morning Sickness

A huge indicator of pregnancy. Often viewed as a ghastly side effect of being pregnant and for many women, this symptom can present almost immediately. Further, the sickness is not strictly related to mornings and is therefore quite misleading.

Some feel sick in the evenings, for others it can be a recurring wave throughout the day. Added to that, some only experience nausea, as opposed to vomiting. In any case, both can become extremely unpleasant.

Developed sudden cravings for foods or drinks? Another 'maybe'.

Cravings

Although this is one of the more common signs of being pregnant, it’s not advisable to rely on this alone. This symptom is best measured alongside others symptoms, such as fatigue and swollen breasts (for e.g.). Also, cravings don’t always present during the first few weeks. I had cravings with each one of my pregnancies but only one of them started within a few days of being pregnant.

Urinating Frequently

Again, not a sign of being pregnant in itself but if you’re also suffering nausea and fatigue for example, this could be another precursor. In part it’s caused by progesterone, a pregnancy hormone, stimulating the bladder and partly it’s due to the increased pressure that your bladder suffers as your pregnancy progresses. For some, this symptom can present within a matter of weeks.

Pregnancy Testing

Taking a pregnancy test is a sure fire way to finding out whether or not you're expecting a child.

Pregnancy Test

If in doubt, have one. A pregnancy test is a sure fire way to find out one way or another. They are very simple to use and easy to understand. The test is done by testing the HCG levels in your urine and they are pretty accurate. If you’ve taken a home pregnancy test and it indicates that you’re pregnant, the next step is to book an appointment with your doctor. They are the professionals after all and it’s always advisable that you have your pregnancy confirmed by a medical professional.

Other Signs Of Being Pregnant

At some point, you will need to make an appointment with your doctor or health professional.
At some point, you will need to make an appointment with your doctor or health professional.

There are various other signs of being pregnant, though less common:

  • Changes in taste/smell
  • Appetite increase
  • Appetite decrease
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Backaches
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Emotional/ mood swings

If you do believe you may be pregnant, or you’re unsure, the easiest way to confirm your condition is to have a pregnancy test. So if in doubt, do consult your doctor. They are the people to whom you should turn and of course they are the experts regarding the signs of being pregnant.

Signs Of Being Pregnant - Rounded Up

Pregnancy Signs

In short, the more common early symptoms of pregnancy rounded up are:

  • Cravings
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen breasts
  • Missed period
  • Morning sickness
  • Frequent urination

As stated previously, if one, all or several of the above symptoms of pregnancy do present – there’s a chance you may be pregnant. However, our bodies aren’t an exact science (unfortunately!) so don’t simply read the list and think “I’m pregnant”.

They’re only indicators, possibly pointing towards pregnancy. So hold the ‘phone calls until you know for sure!

It’s important that you care of yourself - and your health and wellbeing - as being pregnant is a wonderful experience. It’s also far more enjoyable when you have an understanding of what to expect, as well as the correct support. So, if you are pregnant - or you're presenting with some signs of being pregnant - make sure that you connect with those in the 'know', whether that be friends and/or family, and of course your soon to be midwife and doctor.

That way you can inform and consequently arm yourself with the knowledge of what's to come, which is better for you and - better for baby. Good luck for the next nine months ... you've a wonderful journey ahead!

Hey FG - very well written!

Actually, I thought that changes in smell/taste were one of the more common symptoms as many of the women I know including myself- have had various changes in taste/smell even before the missed period. Don't know if there have ever been any studies done...just anecdotal evidence on my part.

Nanny - hey :) To be honest the taste/smell thing was pretty random. I annoyed my sister for some validation (the above she ought to know about else she's getting paid for nothing!) and books and personal experience.

She didn't get a problem with her sense of smell and taste, where as I did. Subjective maybe?

AIdY - I am lol! Been there, done that, four times. And got the kids to prove it! And thankyou. I was talking with my sister about this (she's a Health Visitor, her focus is babies, moms and so on) and she suggested I tackle the whole nine months. She was telling me about the things she's asked most often and so here we are. Only another 30 or so weeks to tackle!

Frieda - hey! Thankyou very much. Of course we mommies have inside info huh?! But I have backed up what I've written by way of researching the personal knowledge I already have. My sisters brain has also been suitably picked ;)

fortune - how are you?! And lol, unlike you I remain open to catching, should I be foolish enough to do so. Though I think at 41 years of age, I can hang up the pram!

samantha - thankyou for the comment :) Pregnancies really are different, for eveyone. And even for us girls, whenever (if ever) we have a second or third child.

When I was pregnant with Isaac, I was sure the day I was due. Being a day or two late wouldn't normally be an issue for me, it happens quite a lot. But I just felt completely different (isn't that a helpful way of putting it?)

After a couple of pregnancies already, my mother says she knew she was pregnant the third and fourth time even before she was overdue.

Morning sickness - I spit on the name. I was sick all day, every day, from week 6 to the end of labour.

L/Girl - I was hopeless with my first pregnancy. Absolutley no idea. My second I was more switched on though. And like you ... morning sickness was a bane for me at times. Often I wasn't actually sick. I just spent my days feeling sick. Morning noon and noon, reeling.

Disgusting :)

I threw up in court, once. Which is a handy benchmark when things are going badly in a case, "is this as bad as being sick in Stratford Magistrates' Court?" The answer, fortunately, has always been, "no".

L/Girl - finally landed :) I'm trying to picture scene, you parting with breakfast in a court room ...

Morning sickness should be removed from the whole nine months. Though I have to say that hearburn is pretty vile too.

I knew I was pregnant when I could smell salt from across the room. Well, that and the non stop vomiting....this was a really good hub, and it reminded me of how sepcial it is to be pregnant, that magical feeling of "whats my baby gonna look like?" and at the same time I am sooooo thankful those days are long gone!!!! :)

red - I think the nausea is a kicker for most of us, unfortunately. Yuk ;)

Chloe Comfort profile image

The nausea did it for me. About 2 weeks before my first pregnancy was confirmed I began waking up nightly at about 1:00am feeling somewhat ill. Little did I know that this was just the beginning :-) Unfortunalely, I was the 1 out of 200 (statistically speaking) women that developed hyperemesis gravidarum - morning sickness/standard nausea can't hold a candle to this! The taste/smell thing also took alot out of me. Ahh - the joys of pregnancy. With my second pregnancy, it was worse. In the end - it was all worth it. But now that I have my boy and girl, i don't think I'll be going through that again :-)

Chloe - I feel for you! That must have been pretty awful. Most suffer at least some but that's extreme - but at least you happily share the positives, nice healthy babies, well done! And thankyou :)

jayb23 - I believe you have a very valid point so thanks for stopping by and sharing :)

Kyon - it's certainly helpful to know what may be causing a woman to feel so out of sorts and ... different :)

would you consider cramping a symptom to detect pregnancy?

frogdropping profile image

frogdropping  says:

dcrisan - cramping is probably more related to your hormonal cycle but ... I wouldn't rule it out. I'd take a pregnancy test at the least, better still - go see your doctor :)

I haven´t had kids so far and your article looks great, it keeps you far away from becoming anxious about being pregnant or not. Unfortunately I cannot add anything from my direct experience. However I wrote an article which could be really interesting for pregnant women. If you want you can read it and tell me what you think. ;-)
