On the run and need to stop to pick up a quick gift? We found these gifts as we traveled up Route 202 (aka Concord Pike) and Kirkwood Highway (aka Rt. 2) and found many gifts for under $20.

Just look for hundreds of people wearing blankets.

We can't imagine that anyone who wouldn't be happy to see you walk through the door, with your hands filled with cupcakes. Cupcake Heaven has festively-decorated cupcakes, along with other delicious-sounding delights that don't happen to be red and green.
Does the warmth of a snuggy comfort the zeitgeist of national recession?
Ok so by now, we've all heard of snuggiepubcrawls.com, and we've all seen people all over town wearing Snuggies in public like its perfectly normal. Heck, even I posed once with a Snuggie on while I was pouring a beer for a customer, and yes, it was warm and comfortable, and didn't fall off. We've all seen it, done it, or sworn that never in a million years will I ever put "one of those things on".
But now I'm left without a job in the recession wondering what this says about us as a people, one nation, dressed in sleeves, indivisible, with Snuggies for all. I think pretty much everyone knows at least one person who has lost their job. NPR reported today the new national unemployment numbers were over 5 million since December of 2007, with January being the worst results in job losses in any month since 1949, when my dad was 4. Sure fads have come before, but I've never seen one embraced with as much sincerely ironic appreciation. I mean that. In the '80s, the last time we had a recession this serious, Chia Pet and jelly sandals kept us occupied. And people wore them, or they abhorred them -- not both. Or let me clarify: it was an exceptional few who did. Today however, the norm is to ironically embrace our new more cuddly reality, even if you are underwater (see photo below). And as much as the economy is upside down, perhaps wearing a Snuggie underwater makes more sense than I first gave it credit for.
So why do we wear Snuggies? I want to know: why do you wear a Snuggie? You do know they make you look like a cult member, right? You also know you have a draft in the back that makes a hospital gown look warm, right? Let me propose this theory on the proliferation of a fad that supports warmth, campy appeal, and a few hilarious moments of self-reflection: maybe the best reasons we wear Snuggies are the most obvious -- they keep us warm, give us something to discuss, and are proving to be way more versatile, albeit at the price of the "sense" part of "fashion sense," than anyone dreamed, and in the end, don't really hurt anyone. Sure someone somewhere is making money off of a blanket with sleeves, but someone is always going to make money off of whatever the people do, at least in our page of history. And sure, in five years no one will know where their Snuggie is, but do you know where the computer you bought five years ago is? Perhaps the worst reasons we wear Snuggies are because we really believe our ironic portrayal elevates us and therefore alleviates a little of the "draftiness" of recession. But is that really such a bad thing to get from a blanket? I know the question of a popular phenomenon as clue to a Freudian understanding of a collective unconscious is shallow at best, but when I find pictures like those below, I can't help but ask it.
I cannot, however, at this point, draw any conclusive statements about what I have seen, noticed, or felt about what it really says about us in our specific time and place that we dress up rediculously and pretend like we aren't in settings most of us have nightmares about showing up underdressed for. It's the reverse of The Emperor's New Clothes and instead of pretending to see something, we are pretending to not see it. So tell me, respond, why do you wear your Snuggie? Why do you take pictures of yourself drinking in bars, etc. in them?
Tell me U.S.A., I got my Snuggie on and am waiting to hear from you.

Snuggie Updates
April 10th:
I had to make an update because I saw the phenomenon is growing. I have found a site that is like facebook. It is called snuggiebook (www.snuggiebook.com) and believe it or not, it is actually a thriving little online community. The place even totes itself as, "The Social Network with Sleeves." I am going to check it out and see if it warrants another full article.
NEW!! April 18th:
Check out the parody video below. There are tons of them all over the web, just run a search on youtube or google video. Many of them are far better than this one, but since it talks about Snuggies having connections with a cult, I put it up. I am going to write a follow up piece about another aspect of "Snuggie Culture" that I am uncovering as you read this. In the meantime, enjoy the cheesy parody video.
The Snuggie Cult (warning, this video is CHEESY!)
I found these pictures on the network of sites dedicated to the snuggy phenomenon

Guess I'm getting old and one of the last to know, never heard of it before. Thanks for keeping me with the times. LOL
Nah, never heard of a snuggie, don't even own a robe
Haha! I didn't know that's what these were called. And how did I miss Kornheiser in one of those things? Is that for real?! :)
Like cindy, I have never heard of a snuggie! LOL But glad that the Hubnuggets Team found you! Congratulations cdub77! YEP! This hub is a hubnugget nominee. Click here to see what I am talking about! http://hubpages.com/hub/Writing-hubs-HubNuggets
Join the hubnugget excitement, vote and ask all your snuggie friends to vote too. Have fun!
Do you think these are a spin off of the 'foot snuggies' of Sesame Street fame???
They look comfortable but like others have said its a backwards robe! Reminds me of Kriss Kross:
Jump! Jump! The Mac Dad will make you Jump! Jump! The Daddy Mac will make you Jump! Jump! Kris Kross will make you Jump! Jump! :)
screw the snuggie and their bandwagon....viva la Slanket....this fad is a day late and a dollar short.....
Dear El Oso ... aka Rare Slanket Owner/Fan
Quit crying your Slanket Tears. The Slanket has had a decade to do something with a Blanket with Sleeves and has failed miserably. The only reason anyone hears of a Slanket is because of the Snuggie's meteoric popularity and this whimpering sound coming from Slanket's founder as he bemoans what could have been.
Here's a glimpse at reality - http://www.google.com/trends?q=snuggie%2C+slanket&
Slanket is a footnote. Snuggie is the story. There are no Slanket Pub Crawls. There are no Slanket Sightings (ahem - http://www.snuggiesightings.com ). Slanket is a cautionary tale and will be the Betamax to Snuggie's VHS. Slanket will be studied by Marketing Students for the next 100 years for its failure to capitalize on a decade's head start.
So if Snuggie can sell more blankets with sleeves in 6 months than Slanket can in a decade, who is a day late and a dollar short? I guess Oprah, and Ellen, and Jimmy Fallon and Jay Leno and Kevin Eubanks are all clueless and late to cultural trends. El Oso is the consumate trend spotter.
Hear me now. Believe me later, lonely Slanketeer. The Snuggie is not going to be simply a fad. It will be in practically every home within another year or two. You will see Snuggies used in Hospitals, Nursing Homes, in Offices, etc. You will see High School kids wearing Snuggies to their Prom. You are going to see Snuggies at the Beach. You are going to see Snuggies at Woodstock. You are going to see Snuggies wherever you turn. Get ready for it and get used to it.
A fad is a Chia Pet or a band like Nelson. A household staple is going to be the Snuggie. The Slanket will never be able to overcome it's horrible name, its pathetic marketing, or its LAME Twitter account. It is overpriced. I could go on, and on, and on, as to why the Snuggie is what it is and the Slanket is not...and I believe I have.
Spreading the Warmth...One Snuggie at a Time.
Mr. Snuggie Sightings
Evidently we've attracted the attention of the snuggiesightings people! Awesome...
Congrats, cdub. :)
Now I have to go see what the heck a slanket is, too.
hahaha.... the snuggiesighting people, that is awesome! LOL. It would be nice to have a snuggie right about now. I'm glad I found out about them today!
Are snuggies emblemmatic of our search for comfort in troubled times, or the result of rampant boredom from having far too much time on our hands. . .
Great hub! ;-)
Oh, Mr. Snuggie Sightings, you have something of a flair with words. Have you considered hubbing? I have a feeling that you'd be good at it, or at least entertaining. I enjoyed Cdub's hub and your comment.
I feel like Sally Fields at the Oscars - 'You like me. You really like me.'
I am considering doing some hubbing, actually. What would you like for me to write about? I'm open to suggestions. I'd love to do a hub on the history of the Slanket, but that could get me sued. Perhaps a little ditty or two on Internet Marketing, the all-encompassing power of O(prah), or even when Snuggies and Alcohol first met.
Please contact me through SnuggieSightings.com regarding hubbing. I don't want to detract from cdub77's hub. I simply could not resist hunting down that Slanketeer.
Wait!!! I know what the snuggies remind me of. Tusken raiders from Star Wars!!!
Mr. Snuggie Sightings here. I'm now on HubPages under the ID 'As Seen on Blog'. http://hubpages.com/profile/As+Seen+on+Blog
My first hub will be coming soon and will be related to the Snuggie. Future hubs will be on other As Seen on TV products. Thanks to cdub77 for introducing me to HubPages.com.
The 1st time I saw one was on the Tyra Banks show when they were reviewing products. I would never want to own one.
Snuggies and slankets, I'm slost
Lol I want to start an Irish Snuggie club.
Funny Hub! I had no idea people were wearing these in public. LOL! I bought some for myself and my kids for Christmas. I keep the heat down pretty low, and we were always fighting for the blanket while watching TV. Now we each have our own! I doubt the day will come when I wear it outside, unless that day is Halloween! (snuggiebook! LMAO!)
I truely enjoyed this. I did NOT vote for you though (I'm already loosing by a wide margin!) LOL However if I must loose, loosing to such a great piece softens the blow! Great job and Congrads! I see a great things in your future (and all of us readers!) Thanks so much for this great piece! I do not have one, but I would sell my soul to get one. (OK mabey I'll just call the # on TV or hit a link!)
Bo
I just saw a commercial for Jack in the Box where and old couple was sitting on their couch wearing matching lilac snuggies!
Nothing like looking both comfortable and completely insane at the same time.
Funny hub...
However, to answer your question:
The Computer I bought 5 years ago, is my precious baby I'm using now.
GO XP GO!
My first hub is now online - "The Snuggie - How a Blanket with Sleeves Changed My Life". http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Snuggie---How-a-Blanke
NOTE TO LyrialZander Ditto on 'GO XP GO'. The Snuggie is Windows XP to Slanket's Windows ME :)
Well done, few errors. Love the funny pix. =) Its better than a rubix cube, because you can wear it on your whole body!
Wow..don't take that out of context, please.
Welcome to HubPages! =)
I'm all for Snuggies! I haven't been this happy since giving up my blankie in first grade!
Oh Snuggies... I refuse to become a statistic! I do believe this may be one of those fads generations, or even we, come to see was worse than the eighties! I really didn't think things could get worse, apparently I was wrong. I shake my head.
I don't think I'm old enough to wear one yet. Roll on the day. I can scarcely contain myself in anticipation! I would like a purple one.

A snuggie is just a robe on backwards. Once as a joke, I put my robe on backwards, walked out into the living room, and my boyfriend said, "oh, look, you got a snuggie." LOL! Great first hub!!! I had no idea they were such a phenomenon.
