Some Of The Best Horror Movies

There is nothing in the world better than curling up under you favorite blanket on the couch with a bowl of cereal (I hate popcorn) and watching a scary movie. If you're like me then the scarier or gorier the better. I like the kind of movie that will keep me from sleeping that night and afraid to go to the bathroom without every light on in the house. For real. The sad thing is there are only a select few movies that do that for me.

It seems like most of the horror flicks out there are more cheesy and less scary. There are more naked chicks in the films than monsters (Hostel, c'mon) and they are trying so hard to be funny. I didn't rent a comedy, I rented a horror movie. Enough griping, here's the list of the movies that made me afraid of the dark. Sort of...

This movie was based on a video game. I didn't know that until recently. I just knew that this movie scares the sh*t out of me. I've watched it several times now and still get freaked out. Watching Silent Hill has become a Halloween tradition between my husband and I.

Starring Radha Mitchell from Pitch Black this movie has a really crappy storyline (but what can you expect from a movie adapted from a video game) but makes up for it with terrifying imagery. If you can imagine having the worst nightmare that never seems to end, this is it. The sound of the warning siren still echoes in my head hours after I've watched it. The monsters in this film are the most terrifying I've personally ever seen.

The storyline is a little bit better in The Unborn, but really who watches scary movies for a good storyline? The Unborn has more jump out at you action. You know the kind. You've just settled into trying to figure out what's going on and BAM, something jumps at the screen. If overdone it makes the movie suck. It isn't overdone in this one.

The plot is confusing at first but you'll get it if you watch closely. It stars Odette Yustman and Gary Oldman. When an evil soul is not allowed to pass on to the other side it will wander the Earth looking for a new body to inhabit. Since this girl is cursed, the evil spirit is following her around and she has to figure out how to get rid of it. Everyone she loves is in danger of being hurt until she can fix everything.

You gotta love the cheesy 80s horror flicks. I don't know if this made the list because it really is scary or because it is one of the first movies to ever really scare me. That means when I was like, 4. So take this one with a grain of salt because it's been years since I've actually watched The Gate. I still surprisingly remember the storyline, though.

Two boys find a pretty rock buried in their back yard. They decide they want to find more rocks like this one so they dig up the yard. While they are digging they come across the gate (I suppose it stands for one of the gates to hell) and horrible things start to happen. Demons and monsters are unleashed causing havoc with the family.

This has to be one of my all-time favorite movies. Even though it's not textbook scary, it does have an excellent storyline with awesome monsters. I couldn't convince my husband to watch it because it's in Spanish and, well, he doesn't like to read. It also has one of the single best gory scenes in a movie I have ever seen (when the dude gets beaten to death with the gun).

Starring Sergi Lopez and Ivana Baquero, Pan's Labyrinth is a story of war and horror as told through a little girl's eyes. She and her mother move into a hateful Captain's home. One night while following a bug she finds a garden Labyrinth. She follows some steps and is taken underground to Pan, who thinks she is a princess. She must complete three tasks (each one more difficult than the last) to prove that she is, indeed, the princess.

There's a decent story line to this flick, and terrifying imagery. The make-up artists outdid themselves with these ghosts. They're gory and downright frightening. If you don't find yourself looking behind you when you walk down a dark hallway after watching this then you're not human.

After losing his wife in a house fire, Arthur (played by Tony Shalhoub) gets lucky and inherits a mansion from his uncle. When they get to the mansion, they notice that it has crazy writing all over the walls. A psychic tells the family that the man who owned the strange house was insane and collected twelve ghosts in the house. After Arthur gets special glasses from Rafkin (Matthew Lillard) then he can see them for himself.

Initially I thought this was going to be another stupid movie that came out in the early part of the year. My husband convinced me that we needed to watch it, and I'm very glad we did. He still hates it when I do the noise.

This movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as a different take on possession. It is the house that is possessed in this case, and not people. It destroys everyone that enters and then the curse of that person is passed on to another. Karen (Gellar) must try to stop the evil before she becomes the next victim.

 Like most of America, we didn't know what to expect when we bought this movie. Yes, we have a bad habit of buying it before trying it. This was one that didn't blow up in our faces. As a matter of fact, for the next few weeks after we watched it we insisted that all of our friends borrow the movie and watch it for themselves. This is one of the single greatest puzzle movies ever, in my opinion.

As soon as the movie starts it will have you questioning what is going on. This is a really fast paced puzzler that will have you wondering until the very end. The story centers around a man who wants to teach people the value of their own lives. He can't really be called a serial killer because he never actually kills anyone. Dubbed "Jigsaw" this man is a mastermind and abducts his victims to make them face impossible choices to save their own lives. It is a very gory and chilling movie.

I don't know if I have ever seen a Brad Pitt or Morgan Freeman movie I didn't like. This movie pairs them up for a wonderful superstar cast. Gwyneth Paltrow also portrays Pitt's girlfriend and Kevin Spacey plays the sadistic killer. Watching this was a no-brainer and it didn't disappoint in the least.

This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you trying to remember what the seven deadly sins are. Gluttony, pride, greed, envy, sloth, wrath, and lust are being punished with unimaginable cruelty by a serial killer. It pairs a retiring detective (Freeman) with the newcomer detective (Pitt) with two completely different styles to track down the murderer. There is never a dull moment to be had in this film at all.

 No great movie list would be complete without this classic. There have been spoofs and knock-offs of every kind that are centered around this scary flick. I was a grown woman the first time I saw this movie because my parents wouldn't let me watch it when I was growing up. Nightmare on Elm Street was fine, but hell no to the Exorcist. That ought to tell you something.

This movie has been dubbed one of the scariest movies ever made. When it first opened, there were people fainting in the audience! The story is of a little girl (Linda Blair) possessed by the devil. Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) has been recruited to exorcise the devil from the girl. Chock full of horrifying imagery, this movie is definitely one of the best ever. I can now see why my parents wouldn't let me watch it. *Shivers*

Another classic horror flick I wasn't allowed to watch until I was grown. Some of the most terrifying scary movies are about possessed or evil children. I think it's because we categorise children as perfect innocence. When you start to think about something that we see as innocent in an evil light, it kind of messes with you on a deeper level.

When a couple lose their child to stillbirth, a mysterious priest convinces the husband to adopt a newborn from the hospital. He does so and doesn't let his wife know that their biological child has died. After a few years the family starts to notice things aren't going so well, and a Father warns the couple that the child is the Antichrist. Stars Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

I remember the first time I watched this how disgusted I was at the very beginning of the movie. If you've watched it then you know what I'm talking about, if not then you'll know soon enough. Everyone in town passes out at the same time and when they wake up there was a dude that was grilling - now being grilled. YUCK!!! Loved it!

So everyone in town passes out at the same time and mysteriously ten women become pregnant. All ten children were born on the same day with hair so blond it's almost white and eyes that are a creepily piercing shade of green. These kids had supernatural powers like mind reading. People of the town start to die and the kids are suspected. This movie stars Kirstie Alley and Christopher Reeve. It's the last film Reeve starred in before his accident.
