Spread Holiday Cheer with Outdoor Decorations

Updated on June 23, 2011

Are you looking for a way to spread holiday cheer this year? Instead of just putting up a tree and a few indoor decorations, consider decorating the outside of your home for the holidays as well. Outdoor Christmas decorations can be a lot of fun for your family as well as for everyone else who lives in or drives through your neighborhood.

There are many ways to approach decorating the exterior of your home for the holidays. You can go with something as simple as a few outdoor lights and a wreath or you can create an entire winter wonderland in your front yard – or go with something in between the two extremes. It’s entirely up to you!

Ideas for Outdoor Christmas Decorations

Here are a few suggestions for ways to spread holiday cheer with outdoor decorations at your home this year!

Exterior Lights

Outline the windows, doorways and porch on your home with outdoor lights. Choose traditional multicolored lights, clear icicle lights or any other type of outdoor lights that catch your fancy and coordinate with the other outdoor decorations that you choose to set up. You may also want to add lights to your shrubbery plants and trees. Whatever you decide to light up for the holidays, be sure that you only use lights rated for outdoor use outside of your home.

Door Wreath

A Christmas door wreath is a must for every home. Evergreen wreaths embellished with poinsettias, pinecones and ornaments are a popular choice. Be sure to get a festive wreath hanger that will provide you with a simple way to hang the wreath without having to drive a nail in your door.

Nativity Scene

If you want your front yard to serve as a reminder of the reason or the season, consider setting up a life size nativity set for everyone in the neighborhood to enjoy.

Santa on the Roof

If you want to bring a smile to the faces of your own kids – as well as all of the other youngsters in the neighborhood, consider placing a life size Santa decoration on top of your house for the holiday season. Choose a figuring of the jolly guy by himself, or Santa in his sleigh accompanied by the reindeer.

Winter Wonderland

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland theme idea for your front yard, consider setting up a few large snowman and/or Christmas caroler figurines. Alternately, you may want to opt for an inflatable snow globe that features a moving Christmas scene complete with falling snow.

 Ready to Get Started?

These are just a few suggestions for outdoor Christmas decorations. You’re really only limited by your imagination – and budget. If you want to go “all out” but you don’t have a lot of spare cash, why not start small this year and add to your collection of outdoor decorations once everything goes on sale after Christmas. Do the same thing every year and soon you’ll have everything you could possibly want to transform your home for the holidays!
