Srinagar-India

Updated on October 24, 2011

Srinagar-Jhelum River

Srinagar is about snow capped mountains, lakes of pristine beauty. Srinagar is a city located at kashmar in a beautiful valley and is one of the most serene places in India.

For many centuries because of its beauty Srinagar has been a favorite vacation spot.

For many years the wealthy citizens of India have travelled many miles to visit Srinagar.

For many years the Mughal emperors visited Srinagar and left their presence by building beautiful mosques and gardens that could never have their beauty duplicated.

The banks of the Jhelum River is where Srinagar is located. This happens to be an off shoot of Indus.

Some of the beautiful places are stunning parks, 9 ancient bridges. The bridges connect to two parts of Srinagar on opposites sides of the river.

The lakes around Srinagar are very pretty with the houseboats that float around. A boat tour is a must for beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Another of the great highlights that come with Srinagar are the Mughal Gardens.  There are so many famous gardens that listing them could take forever.

Srinagar-The City

Religion and culture is highly noticed in the city of Srinagar.  It also shows diversification from a couple of the surrounding states, namely Jammu and Kashmir.

The holy sites around the city are very evident.  The Hindu Shankaracharya Temple is up on a hill just east of Srinagar.  This temple was built in 371 BC and dedicated to Shiva and built by Gopadatya.

Then there is the Hazrathbal shrine which is one of the busiest places for Islam to visit.  One of the main reasons for visiting is to see the sacred hair of Muhammad.

In 1623 sadiq khan built a garden on the left bank of Dal Lake and also constructed what was called a pleasure house.

Then there was the Jama Masjid Mosque built by Mughal Sultan in 1398.  It was built to house 30 000 worshippers.

One other place you may want to look at is Sikandar.

Srinagar-A Few Wrap Up Points

The population of Srinagar is in and around the 1 million range.

The best time to visit is between June and September.

Some must things are a ride on Dal Lake, Mughai Gardens, Khanqah of Shah Hamadan.

Something very few people know is Srinagar is ofter referred to as the Venice of the north.
