Strange Holidays: October
86Who Comes Up With These?
Most holidays are fairly normal- Halloween, Christmas, etc. Most have some cultural or religious significance, and are widely recognized. So, where do all these weird holidays and observances come from? Well, anyone can create their own day or week. If you want an actual national or international holiday, that takes a little more work.
A national holiday requires the work of Congress, and we all know how hard it can be to get Congress to actually do anything. It requires a vote. Another scary prospect for our Congress. But, putting politics aside, lets take a look at some of those strange holidays and observances.

October is a Month For...
There are many things that October is the month for. Some of the stranger month-long holidays and observances are listed here.
- Celebrate Sun Dried Tomatoes Month- YUM!!! What to do with all those sun dried tomatoes?? Why not find some new recipies that incorporate those tasty little treats?
- Class Reunion Month- Uh-oh...is it that time again?? Do you dread your next reunion as much as I dread mine? Do we need a whole month to think about all those people we don't really want to see?
- National Bake and Decorate Month- Now is the time to take that cake decorating class, spruce up your baking skills, and pretend you are Suzy Homemaker!
- National "Gain the Inside Advantage" Month- Put those skills to work this month!
- National Go On a Field Trip Month- If your kids have a field trip coming up, maybe you should tag along. When was the last time you visited a museum or an apple orchard? Maybe you can create your own field trip and ditch work for a day, or two, or ten.
- National Roller Skating Month- With gas prices the way they have been lately, why not roller skate to work? Get a work out and save money all that the same time!!
- Organize Your Medical Information Month- Remember that folder hiding away in the back of your filing cabinet? That one with all that important medical information in it? Pull it out this month and sort through it. You never know what you will find. Oops! Seems like it might be time to get that tetanus shot I am supposed to be keeping up to date...
- Positive Attitude Month- With the winter months looming ahead, it can be a pretty negative time. Winter blues, holiday shopping, and too much food. Start off with a positive attitude!!
- Squirrel Awareness Month- I have no idea why squirrels need a whole month, or what they have to be aware of. I guess it doesn't matter much. Take some time to be nice to the squirrels this month, instead of chasing them away from your bird feeders.
What Are We Doing This Week?
There are many weekly holidays and observances for the month of October. Many of them are mundane, or bring about awareness for illnesses or disorders, and are all well and good, but some are just a little strange.
- No Salt Week (2-9)- I guess you better hope you don't live in an area where it's already snowing. No cooking with salt or putting salt on your food for the entire week, either.
- Mystery Series Week (5-11)- Pick up a few good mystery books, settle into your favorite chair and have a read. Or, dig out that DVD set of an old mystery tv series. I guess this week is a good time to catch a few episodes of "Murder She Wrote".
- Improve Your Home Office Week (6-10)- Need to clear some of the clutter in your home work space? Now is the time to buy that new desk you have had your eye on, or upgrade you fax machine.
- Getting the World to Beat a Path to Your Door Week (14-20)- I really have no idea...I don't know what to say to this...

- 16th- Department Store Day- Now this really seems like a holiday started by one of those 'big box' stores, in order to get more people shopping.

- 30th- Haunted Refrigerator Day- Check out Stephen King's story "The Mangler". There is a great story about a haunted refrigerator in there. Maybe today is the day to clean your own fridge out before it ends up haunted, or at the very least, before it starts to smell.

Hmmm... looks like cleanup your office day for me!
rockinjoe- Glad to hear that someone understands the need for awareness of the squirrel community. For far too long they have been mistreated and misunderstood. LOL Thank you!
hot dorkage- best of luck cleaning up your office!!
I'll have to let my husband know that he's not allowed to shoot the squirrels this month. Great hub! I love random holidays!
im_chozen- Thanks for your comment!! I do too! It's funny what some people come up with, and that Congress has actually voted on some of them.
Anna Marie, have these holidays cost the taxpayers anything? I mean, besides voting about it, what is involved?
Aya, I am not entirely sure. I know that in order to make something a 'National Holiday', you have to submit some sort of request, or maybe just write your congressmen. After it has been introduced, Congress has to vote. I don't think it costs anything, other than the time of the Congress. Although, I am pretty sure a few dollars in the pockets of a member of Congress might get things moving a little more smoothly. LOL! I will have to check that out.
Fun Post! Brought a smile & chuckle to my evening. Thanks for your research.
Glad I could brighten your day, Shades of Gray!!!
Now I know how Congress spends its time! This is hysterical! I personally have been celebrating "Organize your medical information" month. It's a good thing too. Forgot all about that pesky Baboon heart, and I'm low on banannas!
I hope the baboon heart is working out well for you! Happy No Beard Day! Don't forget to shave!!!
This is a fun and interesting hub. I did not go to my class reunion because I could not see spending 80 dollars to spend the night with people who treated me really bad in high school. The last three years were not as bad, but there were still some people that made snide comments towards me. I am still friends with the few true people I knew from high school, so that is all I really need anyway.
SweetiePie- I didn't go to my reunion either. They did have a little get together the night before, and I went to that, but felt out of place.
