Sucker Punch - a movie with girls, leather, guns and robots

Updated on December 10, 2011

With another hit movie about to hit American movie screens in the next few days - Vanessa Hudgens must be the luckiest girl in Hollywood. After the success of High School Musical and her squeeze Zac Efron, she has reinvented herself for an older audience and is about to appear in one of the most anticipated films to be screened. What would Robert Rodriguez make of this? "Sucker Punch" is a film, described by Director Zack Snyder (who made "Watchmen") as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns" (!) And it is bound to be a big hit, since it sports women in leather gear, lots of machine guns, dragons, and gigantic fantastic "transformer-like" robots. Yup, it's a typical guy kind of movie, featuring lots of women shooting things! Wasn't it Godard who said - to make a good movie - all you need is a woman and a gun...he didn't say anything about bondage, swords and automatic weapons a-gogo! It looks like Snyder is updating the formula, and judging from the Movie Trailer below - he wants to make us drool to.

The last time someone attempted a film like this - the result was Barb Wire, with Pamela Anderson. So films like this ought to be pretty thin and shallow, with major emphasis on scantily clad women and lots of guns blazing, right? Actually, no. This film has much more to it, and also - these girls can all act. The plot here is somewhat different and works as follows:

You got this hot chick in the 1950s who is in a mental asylum, result of an evil step dad and she can't escape this imaginary world she inhabits unless she completes some pretty impossible task within 5 days or she will be lobotomized - a major bad event - and she has to avoid some evil dude - a major-domo creep type of guy. There are other women in this world, and they are all packing, in more ways than one! Things get very weird and awesome pretty quick and pretty soon, you got your dragons, giant robots, sword fights, machine guns, weapons all over the damn place, clever special effects and animation, and hot women dressed like hoes, all vying for your attention. Have I got your attention? (See the pictures below to see what this Cheeky Girl is talking about.) Pretty soon, the testosterone will be bouncing off the walls, and hopefully you will be very impressed, just like you were when you saw the previous Zack Snyder flick "Watchmen", a a big-budget ground-breaking fantasy sci-fi classic, based on the Alan Grant scripted story comic drawn by Dave Gibbons. Snyder seems to know a good thing when he sees it, and he is visiting a genre of film that is hard to perfect. But if he pulls this off, he will be up there with Spielberg and Lucas and Cameron in that Hall of Film Making Greatness.

"Okay, have I got everything, purse, make-up, handgun, mace, attitude?..."

The film stars Vanessa Hudgens as "Blondie" who is another girl who is trying to escape from the crazy asylum, a total new look for her. Yes, than semi-automatic is just so you, Vanessa. Also here is Emily Browning as "Baby Doll" one of the main heroes here and who obviously has a great future in films, thanks to this. Also present is Jamie Chung as "Amber", another "lil' cracker" (as TattoGuy likes to say in these Hub Pages), Jena Malone who plays "Rocket", (three guesses what her specialty is...), and Abbie Cornish as "Sweetpea". Basically they are all your typical girl next door sweeties who...aw, who am I kidding, they are all babes who are Alpha Female kick-ass Girl Truckers who pack more equipment than the A-Team. The A-Team don't carry handbags, okay?

Zack Snyder, this is a name that people will remember from the feature film "300", a pretty dazzling looking film shot entirely in a studio but with inserted animated backdrops and art work and production effects that make it really stylized. Snyder is a guy who knows all about how a film ought to look. So when it came to developing the Watchmen comic into a big screen flick, he really had his work cut out for him. But what we all saw was a film dripping in Quality and oozing great effects, and profound statements on many levels. Washed out superheroes don't come any better than Watchmen, so that is why the eye in on Snyder once again. If Sucker Punch turns out to be a case of third-time lucky, Snyder will be a Hollywood Immortal.
