Summer Metal Tour Season 2011
Summer Tour Schedule 2011
Spring is here and that means America's big metal festival and tours are taking shape. Keep an eye on this hub, I'll be updating as best I can. The Rockstar Mayhem Festival and Summer Slaughter are already planned. There won't be an Ozzfest this year. I'll also be looking for other 4+ band packages and metalfests.
(As of 4/3/11)
Mayhem Festival 2011:
Line up: Disturbed, Godsmack, Megadeth, Machine Head, In Flames, Trivium
Extreme Stage: Suicide Silence, All Shall Perish, Straight Line Stitch
Jagermeister Stage: Unearth, Kingdom of Sorrow, Red Fang
Personal Comment: plenty of mainstream metal if that's your thing. Make sure you don't get stuck in a sit down ampitheater. (See my concert tips below)
Summer Slaughter 2011 (the big death metal tour) has an official lineup:
The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Darkest Hour, Six Feet Under, Dying Fetus, As Blood Runs Black, Oceano, Fleshgod Apocalypse Powerglove.
Personal Comments: Having gone to these shows before, here is my belief in what any given show will be like: if you show up for the opening band be prepared to hear at least 5 to 6 hours of death metal. Although it's guaranteed that Black Dahlia will close, there's no guarantee when the good vs. the bad will play. If your love of death metal is finite, consider showing up fashionably late.
Be aware that at a metal show crowd energy makes a huge difference. If half the audience is there only because Black Dahlia is playing then it's going to be a terrible show until Black Dahlia gets on stage (the last time I went to Summer Slaughter with Black Dahlia headlining that's what happened). Dying Fetus and Six Feet Under have some star power, but I've never listened to any of the other bands. I still recommend going to Summer Slaughter '11 because I've seen some awesome Summer Slaughters (but some bad ones too).
Maryland Deathfest 2011
If you so happen to be in the Baltimore or the Maryland area May '26 to May '29 check out what is one of metal's true fests with plenty of obscure stuff you'll not likely hear anywhere else (including plenty of Scandanavian bands) during the Maryland Deathfest '11.

General Tour Advice
Consider my general advice while the tours take shape. Know your venue. A bad venue can pretty much ruin a good band. I've been to six different venues and there are a few things to look out for.
Check the tour schedule. Has this venue been made with metal in mind? Or is it ready to serve The Back Street Boys audience as well? . If the concert is in an amphitheater make sure there isn't a huge sit down area (you do not sit through a metal concert). Checking these out before hand means you prevent:
- Sound systems not made for metal and sound tech who don't know sh-- about mixing metal
- Being forced to sit in order to see the band.
-
Dealing with non metal health issues like dehydration, sunburn, heatstroke, getting drenched, etc. (metal health issues are mosh injuries, hangovers, and hearing loss)
