Swine Flu Survival Kit - Be Prepared for an Outbreak
73
Health experts warn that we could be hit by a second wave of swine flu this fall, and recommend creating an emergency swine flu survival kit. These supplies will help keep you alive and safe in case of a severe swine flu outbreak.
How to Make a Swine Flu Survival Kit
The first thing you need in your swine flu emergency supplies is a standard first aid kit. If you have one already, compare it to the list below to make sure it is complete, and be sure to check the expiration date on any medications. If you do not yet have a first aid kit, here is what you will need:
Medications
- Antihistamines (diphenhydramine and/or loratadine) for allergic reactions
- Pain relievers (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, and/or aspirin)
- Antidiarrhea medications (loperamide)
- Antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox, etc)
Note: Avoid multi-symptom treatments and remedies. Shop for medications by active ingredient, not by brand name or the condition for which they are recommended.
Basic First Aid
- first-aid manual
- bandages
- gauze
- disposable gloves
- scissors
- medical tape
- thermometer
- tweezers
- antiseptic wipes
- antibiotic ointment
- hydrocortisone cream
- burn ointment
- calamine lotion
- cold packs
- eye-wash solution
For a flu outbreak...
For emergencies, you should always have 3 days of non-perishable food items on hand, as well as one gallon of bottled water per person per day. However, the recommendations for a swine flu emergency kit are even greater, in case of an outbreak where people may have to isolate themselves to prevent the spread of the disease. In addition to your first aid kit, you should have:
- Two weeks' supply of non-perishable food for your family
- Two weeks' bottled water for your family (one gallon per person per day)
- Fever reducers (acetominophen, ibuprofen, naproxen)
- Cold medications (chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine)
- Throat lozenges with honey, glycerin, or dyclonine
- Electrolyte drinks (Gatorade, Powerade) for hydration
- Hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) to sanitize hands if soap and water are not available
- Surgical masks with an N-95 rating or higher (will need to be changed frequently)
In Case of Emergency
Make sure you have your swine flu survival kit (including first aid and medications) all in one place, easily accessible, and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. Consider other special needs your family might have, such as a stockpile of prescription medication. The prospect of a swine flu outbreak may be scary, but once you have everything together, you can feel a little safer and more prepared in the face of possible emergency.

Hi Maddie,
This is well written and very timely. I was just thinking about getting the kids their vaccinations in the fall...Channel 5 news just reported yesterday that two teenagers (brother and sister)recently died from the Swine Flu, which is just a tragedy for one family to deal with. Scary, scary stuff.
This is excellent and timely information. Great idea for a hub and we need this information.
Excellent information Maddie---hopefully, we won't have to use these items!!!
Swine Flu Survival its needed now days coz here in india reported so many cases and spreading whole over the world..
We suggest that you have a thermometer to hand, in case you want to do a temperature check on someone with suspected swine flu.
O
We've heard that some shops are selling out of thermometers.
Good tips. something to have around whether or not there is swine flu.
I must say this outbreak Is starting to get just a bit worrisome . Good advice here . After sneaking by In a couple of earthquakes ,one especially where I thought It was my last day . I am much better with disaster preparedness now .Good educational hub .
Great hub, although I certainly hope this second wave doesn't come to fruition. I do worry when my kids go back to school. Viruses spread like the Plague.
Yes swine flu is spreading fastly. Even Bollywood actress Aiswarya roy is suffering from flu.
Good advise, great hub. I am very skeptical of the vaccinations though. If it's true about what they put in it, I don't think anyone would be taking it. I was also told about the long term effects that come about from these type of vaccinations. I think the best thing we can do, is be as healthy as we can so that our body's can fight it off naturally. As for the first aid kits and food, good advise!
Go and get your medical records, insurance information, Wills and everything else to put in with that emergency kit. If something happens and you need to take someone to the hospital have everything ready so that there is no delay with the treatment. The only reason I urge people to prepare these things as well is because you need to first make sure that you are aware of your own situation and what your risks and susceptibilities could be, but secondly because if this gets as bad as they say it could, hospitals and doctors are going to screaming busy. The more information you have on hand the easier it will be for them to treat you and the less likely that they make a mistake. Protect yourself and be prepared.
My children can't get medicine Swine Flu because it's bitter.I must mixed something's sweet with medicine.
Very relevant topic. As the saying goes: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
Well written hub. Thanks. I am looking forward to read more of your hubs
Thanks for the supply list. Everyone should have this ready all the time!
Great tips Maddie. Thanks for sharing:)
Yes - preparation is the key for everyone. We are all responsible for ourselves.

I guess it's better to be safe than sorry, right Maddie? This is a great idea for a hub, as many people are very fearful of an epidemic. Thanks for sharing!
