The Best Geeky Comics

Updated on May 20, 2010

Sometimes we all just need some funny stuff to laugh at. One of the best modes of comic transportation to release the inner geek in all of us, is to look at webcomics that remind us a little bit about ourselves.

The absence of a social life, the undying love for science and technology, the thin strand of connectedness with the rest of the world, and a lack of sleep, sex, and money. And yet, few of us would change any of it if we could. Check out these comics, which are some of my favorites. The common theme here is geekdom. Learn to appreciate the geek, for "the geek shall inherit the earth."

(1) xkcd, go to http://xkcd.com/
This comic strip is written by a CNU graduate with a degree in physics who apparently worked for NASA at the Langley Research Center. And what does xkcd mean? It's a word with no phonetic pronunciation, "a treasured and carefully-guarded point in the space of four-character strings." Very geeky indeed. What else is there to say? Xkcd is my all time favorite strip, and it really takes "Baby, I wish I was your derivative so I could lie tangent to your curves" to the next level. If you're an aspiring geek, you really can't miss out on this gem of intellectual culture. Visitor beware, however. If you get too close to the geek event horizon, there's no turning around.

(2) PhD Comics, go to http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php
PhD comics, with a clever double-name, Piled Higher & Deeper (PhD), is also at the top of my to-read list. This is a comic mainly centered around the life of a few PhDs. If you're any way related to the PhD world, this is a must-read. It's quite funny how this is probably the most accurate portrayal of graduate school that you'll come across. Unlike xkcd, this strip mostly deals with life issues and follows a few characters who are pursuing PhDs in random areas.

(3) Abstruse Goose, go to http://abstrusegoose.com/
Another quality comic. Although this is newer than some of the other comics, it's already got a pretty large fan base and has the same feel as xkcd. It generally focuses on idea driven jokes (and less illustration glamor) which is perfectly suited to its style and will probably catch you off guard with its creativity and laughability.

The only reason this comic strip isn't as high on the list, is because the artist has stopped adding new comics (for now) and is too busy with grad school (too much of a geek to write comics for geeks). It's got some quality math jokes that might go over most people's heads. But if you want to prove your geek cred, this is definitely a great comic to visit.

(5) Spiked Math, go to http://spikedmath.com/
A math comic that can really get you going, especially if you've found yourself in the same situation before! Some are hit and miss, but that's the way with many geek comics. What's different about this one, is that when it hits, it really hits the spot.

(X, why?) comic.

(6) (X,why?), go to http://xwhy.comicgenesis.com/
Another math based comic. Perhaps not as popular as the other comics, but definitely has some classic geek jokes that have impacted the world of geek humor. I mean once you read one comic, you pretty much have to read them all.

Happy comic-surfing!
