The Best Hoagie Shops In Philadelphia
Welcome to Philadelphia! Sure we have the Liberty Bell, and the Constitution center. We have the "Betsy Ross house" (she made the first American flag), and a long long time ago a man by the name of Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity while flying his kite on Market St. In a city that is filthy rich with historical landmarks and achievements one question seems to always arise...Where can I get the best hoagie in Philadelphia?
I've eaten hoagies all over this city, from the slums of Southwest to the glit of the far Northeast. If you are looking for the best authentic Philadelphia hoagie, you'll want to check out my list below.
#1 Sarcone's Deli
A truly great hoagie starts with the bread, and nowhere can you find better bread than Sarcone's. This place gets their hoagie rolls from the bakery that they own right next door, Sarcone's Bakery. These rolls are baked to perfection, and always fresh from the oven. These sesame seeded rolls are perfectly textured; crisp on the outside, yet soft and chewy on the inside. If you told me you've had a better roll, you'd be a flat out liar.
Sarcone's Deli has some awesome specialty hoagies including: the "Sarcone Special Hoagie, the "Uncle Louie", the "Italian Market", and several finely crafted vegetarian creations. Every hoagie I've tried at Sarcone's has been out of this world, but I must say my favorite is their traditional Italian Hoagie (thinly sliced prosciutto, hot capacola, hard salami, provolone cheese, oil, vinegar, herbs, lettuce, tomato and onions).
Sarcone's Deli is supplied with a set number of hoagie rolls from their bakery each day, and when the rolls are gone the doors close. The place is always crowded, and the hoagies sell fast. For that reason they are open til no later than 4pm (closed Monday's). Do yourself a favor and get there before they sell out...you'll be glad you did!

Paesano's Deli Locations
#2 Paesano's Deli
Paesano's Deli is a hoagie lovers heaven, tucked away on a residential block in Philadelphia's Fishtown section. Paesano's is a newcomer to Philly's sandwich war which has so many competitors. This newbie sandwich shop won me over the first time I tried their "Daddy Wad" hoagie (an Italian hoagie with sharp provolone, sweet peppers, arugula, tomato, hot peppers and onion).
Since my first visit I've been back quite a few times, and was always delighted. The hardest thing is trying a new sandwich, because the last one was so good, and it is tempting to order it again. A few more that I would strongly recommend are the "Tuscan Tony", the "Gustaio", and the "Diavlo".
It's quite an accomplishment for this newcomer to make it all the way up to #2 on my list, and I am not the only one who is giving them praise. In fact they have been selling so many hoagies that they've just opened another shop in Philadelphia's Italian Market.

#3 Primo Hoagies
Coming in at #3 on my list for Philadelphia's Best Hoagie Shops is Primo Hoagies. Primo Hoagies are made with gourmet quality Thumans brand meats and cheeses, and are served on fresh baked sesame seeded hoagie rolls.
Primo Hoagie shops have an extensive menu with some really spectacular specialty hoagies, but I've gotta give it up for the "Diablos", which is their line of spicy hoagies made with either pork, roast beef, or turkey.
The picture to the right shows a Primo Hoagies "Turkey Diablo" made with Thumans home style turkey breast, hot peppers, cheese and a blend of spices.
Aside from an outstanding sandwich, also be sure to grab some marinated mozzarella balls and pepper shooters.
Luckily for us, Primo Hoagies decided to franchise, and shops have been opening up all over the Delaware Valley over the past few years, including the eight Philadelphia locations shown on the map below. Click on the location most convenient for you for the address, directions, hours, and contact information.
