The Origin of the Freelance Author

By Larry Ray Palmer

The modern freelancer has origins that go back to a time before the concept of writing ever existed. Before the first paid jobs ever came to mind, the caveman scratching his artwork on the walls of his subterranean abode was paving the way for freelancers of all kinds that were to follow. One such freelance descendant is the modern writer.

Just as our cave dwelling ancestors etched out their artwork, not for a promise of pay but rather, for the simple reason that the ideas must come out, must be passed down, the modern freelance writer creates their own art in the form of words, skillfully molded into works that can touch a heart, entertain a child or stir a revolt. The modern writer may earn a fair wage from the products of their mind but, by and large, most would agree that the money is not their main focus. They write for many reasons but the main reason they write is because they must. It is what they do and who they are. When they cease to write, they cease to be writers.

It was once said that true writers don't write when it is easy or enjoyable, they just write. We pick up the pen or peck at the keys and let the words flow from our heads and out onto the page. Sometimes the words are unfocused and forced. They collapse in on themselves and lose the original meaning. Other times, everything falls right into place and then the true meaning of the art is formed. Words that can stir emotion and call to peoples souls are evoked. These words weave a spell that is stronger than any enchantress spell. These words, in times of pure inspiration, are the words that make writers do what they do.

It is not easy to write the words. They require thought. They leave you exhausted. Sometimes they tear at your soul and take a piece of it with them. It's not easy but it is what we do. It is the sacrifice we make for our art form. If you were to ask Michelangelo if it was an easy thing to spend two years of his life extracting the form of David from marble, he would undoubtedly acknowledge the level of difficulty. A freelancer of his own time, Michelangelo laboriously chiseled the huge stone and created a piece of art that has been handed down through time as a masterpiece. That is the goal of every freelancer; to create something bigger than themselves, bigger than life. They strive for excellence in their art form so that it may be passed down through the test of time and still find a place of respect. They write because that is how the world will know them.

To say that the freelance writer just writes however would be a grave mistake. This could be comparable to saying that Michelangelo just chiseled on stone or Van Gogh was just a painter. These men were artists, pure geniuses and blessed by their muses. They reached into their deepest resources and found things of beauty that the world might have otherwise missed.

The modern writer is charged with a similar duty; The modern freelance writer must find the words that evoke the powerful images and sensations produced by the masters that went before us. We sculpt our paragraphs, paint pictures with our words and develop our stories because that is what our art requires of us. We present the stories that will become legends, in our own words. We are the bards and scribes of our society. What we write today may well become the quotes of the future.

You have so many tags on your article, practically every word from your article. What's up with that?

Hi Curtis,

The reason I have so may tags is because it makes it much more likely for search engines to find it. Whenever one writes for the web, SEO is important. I Like to stay in practice.

Thanks for asking, Larry Ray Palmer

Larry,

When you contract out work to other freelancers, whose name goes on the article -- yours or theirs?

Hey Rebecca,

Most of the time when I subcontract it is on a work for hire arrangement and the buyer keeps the rights to the work with no byline for myself or the other writers.

Apart from that situation, I believe in giving credit where credit is due. The writers name would stay with the work if it were up to me.

Good question. Thanks for asking, Larry

Wow, I like your "picture" of what it is we are doing here or wherever we are doing our art. Encourages me. Are you by chance familiar with the morning pages? I do not "write" them every morning, but when I do, it impacts my day in very powerful ways.

Hi Vern,

I have never heard of the morning pages but it sounds quite interesting. Where would I find them?

Boosting Your Search Engine Rankings With Quality Article Marketing

If you are trying to boost your rankings in the search engine results, few things are more effective than article marketing. This is a very simple task that yields amazing results for webmasters and has come to be recognized as a powerful tool.

The basics of article marketing are as follows:

Write a short article of 300 to 500 words. Larger articles are great but your readers may lose interest before getting to your sales pitch. It is far better to write several short articles than one very long one. If you are not comfortable with your skill as a writer, there are numerous places online to find freelance writers who are willing to do the work for you at a very affordable price.

Next, do a bit of research and find article submission sites that will accept your article. These sites are abundant on the net so that part of the process is very simple. Do you really want to make the process totally automated? Ask your writer and they most likely will have experience with article submission sites and may even have a complete list of article submission sites on hand. For an additional fee, many freelance writers will also submit your articles to the article submission sites.

Finally, submit your articles to as many of these sites as possible while making subtle changes each time to avoid search engine penalties for duplicate content. With your articles submitted and the links in place, get ready for the search engines and your new customers to find their way to your site.

The reason article marketing works is very simple to understand. Each article you submit will have your web sites link added in to it as a hyperlink to some keyword of your choice in the text. Every time someone uses these articles on their web site or blog, you are establishing a one way backlink to your site. Their readers, as well as the search engine spiders, will see these backlinks and follow them to your site.

By making use of article marketing, you can easily gain hundreds of one way backlinks to your web site. Each of these backlinks is another opportunity for the search engines to find your web site and increases your page rank.

The things every site owner should know about SEO

By Larry Ray Palmer copyright 2009

Every person who has a web site for business knows just how important traffic is. Without it, all the time and money spent developing the perfect sites and products is wasted. The simple fact is without traffic, we have no customers. There are lots of places telling you how to get tons of traffic overnight for a few dollars but as we all know, those schemes don't usually pay off well.

Traffic Takes Time

Unfortunately, this is simple fact. You can't create quality traffic overnight. It takes time for customers to find you. They will find you eventually if your products and service are both up to par. The problem is keeping your business from going belly up in the interim.

Speed Up The Process

You can speed up the process and increase your chances of marketing survival. One great way to do this is offering resources that the customer base you want to attract can use.

Do you have a store selling solar panels and Green Friendly home improvements? Hire a freelance writer to create Search Engine Optimized (SEO) articles for your business. These articles can explain the benefits of going Green, the savings associated with the installation of solar panels or any number of other topics that might snag the search engine spiders attention when Prospective Customer Joe types in "Green Tips" or some other phrase.

Another great way to speed up the process of getting traffic to your sites is to give something away for free. It doesn't have to be much. Just a free ebook that any decent freelance writer can create for you or even a small bit of software that performs some helpful function such as sending a message to Twitter directly from your site. Even something as simple as sharing a daily inspirational thought or photo can be enough to draw repeat visitors to your sites and get the word buzzing among their friends and associates.

Is Anybody Out There?

Sometimes it feels as if we are all alone on a deserted island with our business. The web page seems to be forgotten by all of the search engines from Alexa to Zulu. If you need a little more Bing in your book sales or you want your customers to Google your glass wares, then perhaps you need to let the search engines know where you are.

Site submission to the major search engines will correct this problem. Setting up a Google Analytics account will also let you learn more about what the search engines see when they look at your site. Site submission is a simple task but very time consuming so, depending upon your budget, you may wish to hire someone to do the work for you.

There you have it. Stripped down SEO Basics 101. By following the advice in this post, you too can see your page jump to the front page of the search engine results.
