The New Beer - Made With Tea
Beer Brewed With Tea
It had to happen of course. Beer has nutritional value and so does tea. We've long had beer brewed with coffee, so why not with tea. There are several such beers with tea on the market now (see list below).
But first - what are the benefits of beer and tea?
Beer - Beer has a good amount of a mineral known as silicon. Silicon helps build strong bones. The beer with the highest content are the pale ales - the beer richest in hops. The wheat beers have the least amount of silicon.
Tea - Thousands of years ago wild tea plants originated in China. Of all the teas on the market, it is green tea which has earned the distinction of being described as 'the science backed miracle cure' due to its high concentration of antioxidants and minerals.
(There are many types of green tea - for more information see the links below).
Note: The term IPA - used in some descriptions, stands for India Pale Ale - it's described as a type of ale with a light to copper amber color, with medium to medium high alcohol by volume - and with a taste of hops, malt and it may sometimes be bitter. Different countries have different IPAs, however, it was first brewed in England in the 18th century.
Beer Descriptions:
1 - Green Tea Ale - This light pale ale has green tea and is described as sweet with a taste of pear, toasted and grassy. Some say the taste of ginger is a bit stronger than the taste of green tea. This beer is brewed in Toronto, Canada.
2 - Ineeka Organic Green Tea Bier - (the bottle spells 'beer' as 'bier') Another green tea beer with a taste of ginger. It is described as tasting more like herbs than hops. Good for someone who may like a milder beer. Based in Chicago, this company claims to have the first certified organic green tea beer.
3 - BluCreek Zen IPA - Made in Wisconsin, this India Pale Ale is similar to a traditional pale ale. Combined with natural green tea, it is described as a smooth and subtle handcrafted beer.
Fun Fact: This website lists Wisconsin as the state with the highest proportion of bars and restaurants - more than any city in the United States.
4 - MateVeza Yerba Mate IPA - This India Pale Ale uses yerba mate instead of green tea and is described as fruity. Yerba Mate is a popular South American herbal tea and is a natural source of caffeine (so true, I drank and shared yerba mate when I was working an overnight shift - we all stayed awake). It's brewed in California.
