Harnessing the Power of Being

by Linda M. Cross

What does "BEINGNESS mean?

What it means to me is: "To be present with someone. To be conscious of who I am inside and to be conscious of who the other person is inside. To be aware of another human being at a deeper level. To be aware of myself, at a deeper level. To connect spirit to spirit. To be aware of my spirit."

As a Christian, I know that I am a "SPIRIT BEING" first and I live in a body and have a mind, will and emotions, which is referred to in the Bible as my soul.

This week, I experienced what this means in a deeper level. I think that's what life is all about, learning who we are inside and tapping into it.

I was working on my computer when my husband walked in and I was so engaged in what I was doing that I hardly knew he was there. He did that a few times and I would glance up and say "Hi" and go back to my work. Then, I took a break and went into his office and he was in the middle of a project and just looked up and said "Hi" and went back to work.

I realized at that moment we weren't connecting on a deeper level. I wasn't connecting with him and he wasn't connecting with me. I felt sad inside because I wanted a deeper connection at that moment.

I was reading Proverbs this morning and this is what it said in chapter 23 verse one and two: "When you sit down with a ruler (some versions say King), consider carefully what is before you. And put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite."

On the surface, it appears that this is just talking about food, but there is much more depth to this.

Think about it, if you could travel back in time and sit at King Solomon's table—the wisest man who ever lived, how would you feel? He was also the richest man who ever lived. If you could sit down at his table, it would be a great honor!

You probably won't be thinking about eating at that time! I would be thinking, "Wow, I'm in the presence of a KING!" Knowing he's the wisest man that ever lived, I would be listening to his every word and jotting down mental notes on what he said. I'd be totally into his presence with my beingness!

As a child of the KING, (Jesus Christ), I can come into His presence and sit and fellowship with Him everyday with my prayers. The question is, "Am I giving him all of my beingness or am I holding back?" Am I focused on the food and not on him?

"...consider carefully what is before you."

Solomon then talks about putting a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. The food to me represents those things that distract us in this life.

It's like when my husband comes in to be with me and I'm too busy typing away on my computer. I didn't consider "what was before me." If I will focus in on being PRESENT with him and giving him my full attention, then we can have a happier, healthier relationship. He is worthy of my giving him of my beingness! After all, I married him!

When we harness the POWER of our BEINGNESS and learn how to direct our focus to another human being when they are present and especially to the Lord when we come into His presence to worship, praise and commune with Him, then we will truly experience the FULLNESS that relationships can bring.

I'm still working on my "beingness". In fact, as I was typing this, guess who came in? My husband did. I did stop this time and talk and focus in on who he is. It's not always convenient, but it is profitable to harness the power of our beingness, and ultimately, the Lord's.

Just think, one day we will sit at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and enjoy eating with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords—Jesus Christ!

Let's get into practice fellowshiping with Him and with others before that day.

Something to ponder...

Until next time...
