The Top 10 Cheapest Cars of 2009 (1-5)

Too many people in today's world just do not have enough money to buy the top of the line SUVs and cars with all of the additional features (remember: additional features means additional money out of your wallet) that are avaliable such as GPS, iPod connection, seat warmers/coolers, etc. And here in Texas it sounds like temporary suicide, but new cars are avaliable without air conditioning! However, if you live farther up north than I, and would like to save money where ever you can, a car without A/C is certainly an option! Anyways, cars.about.com has put on their website the cheapest cars of 2009, so I thought I would redo it on here and make it a faster, hopefully easier read. Here are the top five cheapest. Six through ten are in an additional hub (thankfully, in this case, the additional hub is free).

1. Hyundai Accent GS Hatchback $10,665

You might had heard about Nissan being really excited to be putting out the cheapest car in America - the Versa. Nissan had the base model Versa priced at $10,685. Well Hyundai was going to have none of that, so they put out the base model Accent GS Hatchback for $10,665. Yes, that's 20 bucks folks. 20 bucks. The $11,765 Accent is the exact same car as the base model, but you can add the A/C, stereo, and automatic transmision for extra cash of course. If you are planning on driving this car, you had better be good at it, and hope everyone around you is too, because antilock brakes aren't an option on either GS, and they didn't get very high crash test ratings. It is suggested that you either go for the Nissan Versa, for an outrageous 20 extra dollars, or the Toyota Yaris.

2. Nissan Versa 1.6L Sedan $10,685

I'm with the guys at about.cars.com - pay the extra $20 for this instead of the Accent GS. Please. That's right! You can own 2 more doors, a noticalbly roomier interior, and nicer finish on the seats and dash, for only $19.99! The Versa is just a better deal than the Accent GS with the base model including A/C, antilock brakes, and an automatic transmission. However, the other options are somewhat limited. Only a few color choices, and probably just a few wheels to choose from. Other levels of the Versa include a stereo after the base one, and for less than $16k, the Versa 1.8S has power locks and windows, a CD player, A/C, and antilock brakes.

3. Kia Rio Base Sedan $12,145

Well, you can get a CD player and four airbags wrapped in your choice of black, white, or silver. Anything more, and the price goes up over $2,000 to $13,875. But hey! You get air conditioning! Compared to the Versa, you get the A/C in the Versa and can make it to Best Buy without melting on the way there, buy a stereo relatively inexpensive, whereas you can't get ice cream in the Rio, but listen to music while it melts all over your hand. Once again the Versa has a better resale value and crash test ratings. Same sad story as the Accent GS.

4. Chevy Aveo $12,625

This base model comes with AM and FM radio, but no air conditioning. It does have a nice tan interior with supprisingly nice fake-wood trim, and an MP3 player input standard. You could spend over $15k and get A/C, a CD player, and power windows, but that does not change the way it drives and it doesn't make it safer. With the Aveo's weak saftey features and poor driving experience, you can do a lot better for the money.

5. Smart Fortwo Pure $12,635

I don't reccomend this (car?), but it is the smallest in America and the 5th cheapest. So if you don't need any space for cargo, or any leg room, check out the base model Smart Fortwo Pure. It comes with an automatic transmission, tons of safety features, electronic stability control, and antilock brakes. On the other hand hand, it does not come equipped with power locks, power windows, mirrors, a stereo, or air conditioning. I would rather buy a bicycle...

If you really are looking for the cheapest car you can buy, I would get the Nissan Versa. However, these are just base model cars. See what features you can't live without, and find out which base model has those features and which ones do not. Then, if the base model doesn't have what you are looking for, try the next step up and see what the price increase is. Don't skimp on safety features either! I would never buy a car without antilock brakes and a poor safety rating. Take the car for a test drive at a dealership and see if you like the feel and the interior quality. And last, before we discuss the 6 through 10 cheapest cars of 2009 in the next Hub, decide wether you trust a brands reliability. Do you think the car would spend more time on the road or in the shop? Choose wisely.
