The Walmart Debit/Visa Card

No More Overspending!

It looks real. It feels real. Hey ...the WalMart Money Card IS real!! The only thing about it is that I can't overspend on it, thank God!!

After having just about every credit card possibly known to man, I am now the proud user of a Walmart uploadable credit card - a credit card that acts just like the real deal - except that I now control how much money goes on it, and I have control over NOT overspending!!

Works for me!!!

The Walmart Money Card is Uploadable

Uploadable "credit" cards are gaining momentum as more and more consumers are racking their brains out looking for alternative ways to banking. Fed up with over-limit charges, late charges, interest charges along with any and every service charge ever made, uploadable credit cards are starting to catch on with the mainstream consumer.

In a day and age where consumers are struggling to find better ways to handle their finances, the Walmart Money Card provides a sensible solution- and the way it works is like this:

For an original purchase price of $3.00, you can buy your uploadable Walmart Money Card at any Walmart. After the initial fee, if you wish to cash your checks at Walmart, you can then upload your check to the card at no charge. If you are adding cash there is a modest fee, and there is a service fee of $4.95 a month to keep your card (hey that's cheap when you consider how much you pay on interest charges on a credit card!) That $4.95 service charge will be waived if you add at least $1,000 to your card monthly.

What's great about the Walmart Money Card? Well - you control how much you want on the card, and you can use it like a credit card or debit card at banks, stores and wherever credit cards are taken. It beats carrying cash around, and I signed up for the daily alert on my cell phone where I get a text everyday of what the balance on my card is.

Easy To Get- from the Walmart website:

  • No credit check
  • No bank account required
  • Instant use Temporary Visa Card in package. Activate with one easy call

Easy to Use

  • Use it everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted worldwide
  • Shop on the Internet, including at walmart.com
  • Get cash from millions of ATMs worldwide
  • Pay your bills fast and easy including cable, cell phone & other bills
  • Pay for gas, groceries and more
  • Use at restaurants
  • Guarantee hotel reservations
  • Buy airline tickets
  • Budget and track spending online with E-Mail/SMS Balance Alerts

I love it!

The card keeps me accountable in a way I have never had to be accountable before. I must watch my money more carefully, I must pay attention to what my daily balance is and plan accordingly. If I really can't afford something it's in plain black and white there on my phone what I have available to spend. I am no longer tempted to buy something and "pay for it later". I spend more within my budget and make less "random" purchases.

Some say why not just get a regular checking account again and a credit card?

To that I say NEVER!

Over for me are the overspending days, the days of being miffed about exorbitant service and interest charges.

GOSH, it's called being responsible!!! Imagine that!!

Yup, the Walmart reloadable Money Card works for me. It's about time I found a way to keep track of myself!

Hi Dorsi, this is good news about credit cards since I just rec'd a letter from a bank regarding my Visa account. The bank's letter states that due to the current economic environment they will be raising the interest beginning April 1.

Thanks for an essential update that consumers really need. I was in wal-mart last night and could have used a wal-mart money card.

The Wal-Mart Money Card has been a bust for Wal-Mart. Do the math and you can see why. They claim they've sold 2 million cards in two years, and loaded $2 billion on the cards. Sounds like a lot, right? Well, that is less than one card sold per day, per store. And, $2 billion works out to just $1,000 in deposits per card. Since people probably deposit their paycheck onto the card, about $150, that means most people probably use the card for a month or two, then ditch it for a bank account. Wal-Mart just lowered the upfront fee from $9 to $3 to try to save the product, hoping the various usage fees make up for the lost fees.

Gotta say, I have one and love it. No longer do I have to give my buddys cash to use their cards for online purchases. Ive stayed away from credit cards fully and love the low fee. My aunt is VP for a bank and the charges for the cards are around $11 a month with no daily reminders of balance and very little support. It took my father 2 weeks to get a new card when he lost his debit and couldnt use his account for that time. If I were to lose my cash card, its simple. I pay 9 bucks and have a new card in a weekand they will replace my funds. Safe and simple? What more could I want. Awesome hub.

What a rip-off. $5/mo to let them hold your money. Pay more money to add cash to it.....that's crazy. And your card can expire too. What happens then? This financial product cost more than a bank account, but gives you much less. I can't understand who would choose the Walmart money card over a bank account.

This is an excellent alternative to having a credit card. However I say for most Walmart purchases, cash is king....no fees. Thanks for the hub. This is good information.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and reading about the Walmart Money Card. My husband has been watching me use mine for the last couple months and decided to get one himself. It beats carrying cash around and he likes getting the daily account balance on his cell phone. Walmart dropped the price of their money card to $3.00 also (it used to be $8.95) It's very convenient.

I've had the Greendot card for over 5 years and had to pay $4.95 every time I loaded funds and $4.95 monthly fee. Now I have the Walmart card which is a greendot card but I only pay $3.00 to load funds & $3.00 monthly fee and it is the same thing. Hey Lucia Ayala, just go to the webiste and stop the alerts from coming to you. It is not hard to do. And to Jacquelyn, just go to the website ad get the "Daily Alerts" to your email (free)or cellphone (text message fees apply as per your carrier) you will have your balance sent to you and you never have to guess again. HEY EVERYONE, IT IS FREE TO GET CASHBACK WHEN YOU MAKE A DEBIT PURCHASE IF YOU NEED CASH.

Leslie  says:

Dear Unarmmed Postman, I don't understand? The only fees is the $3.00 load & monthly fees. total $6.00 if you load enough money to get you through the month, that is the key. Greentdot (the originator) charges $4.95/mthly & $4.95/load if you get this card anywhere else. THAT is expensive. You will receive your new card in the mail one month before it expires with a new expiration date on it. it is only a one year card and it comes in the mail in an unidentified envelope (that is the downside) when I first got my card 5 years ago i threw out my new card when it came in the mail because i thought it was junkmail. i never made that mistake again. and yes I miss checks but I just buy a money order if i need it, i pay every bill over the phone (credit)with a person FREE. AND PEOPLE EVERYWHERE PLEASE I CAN NOT EMPHASIS ENOUGH THAT YOU NEED TO READ EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH YOUR TEMPORARY CARD.

Great hub and what a good idea from Wal Mart!

Michele  says:

Here's what happened:

I opened a prepaid Visa card at your Walmart store located in Mt. Dora, FL 6 months ago. When I spoke with the cashier who sold the card to me, I let her know that I would be having my pay check direct deposited on the card, and many deposits would be in excess of $5K (I get paid 2 times per month). She assured me this was fine as long as the money was direct deposited, so I bought the card, did the direct deposit, and off I went.

Now, six months later, your company decided that my deposits are too high, and without contacting me, went ahead and closed my account without my knowledge. I was stranded in the middle of nowhere and tried to get gas, the card was declined, so I called your Customer Support number from my cell phone. They explained this ridiculous mess to me (my deposits are too high). Then, they reopened the card for an hour, just long enough for me to remove what was left on the card, and the account was closed. A couple of days later, your Loss Management department called me and said how "sorry" they were, that the account was closed in error, and they offered to re-open the card, which I accepted so I didn't have to cancel my direct deposit, and for my "pain and suffering", they gave me a HUGE $25.00 credit (lol).

Yesterday there was $15.74 on my card. I went to check the balance today, and it was "ZERO", so I called your Customer Service department (and was transferred to Phillipines, Pakistan, and Guatamala....I thought this was a US based company???). Ana, ID #10838 informed me the account was closed a second time in error (I was supposed to have a $5K direct deposit on the card at midnight tonight), and she promised it would be re-opened in 10-15 minutes, and the $15.74 would be put back on the card. Four hours later, nothing happened, so I called Loss Management yet AGAIN. I spent better than an hour talking to them, who then informed me that it was tough 'S _ I T", (Kathleen....another Supervisor at Loss Management) the account was closed again permanently, and there was nothing I could do. They also informed me that my direct deposit would be DENIED, completely screwing me up royally since I had bills that I paid right off the card, not to mention that the payroll would have to be sent back to ADP, then back to my company before it could be forwarded to me. Thanks Walmart......

Then, the idiot "Claudia" (Supervisor at Loss Management), offered to open me another card!!!! After I was done laughing (why in the name of God would I do THAT???), I told her I wanted nothing more to do with Walmart, and I mean that completely. My sister works for channel 9 news in Boston, and is Diane Sawyer's neighbor on Martha's Vineyard, and they are friends. This will make a WONDERFUL human interest story once it hits the airways, don't you agree??? I am going to be SURE that this story is told everywhere. From your idiot cashiers, right down to your incompetent Loss Management group (you get a different story from everyone you speak to), I can't think of ONE good reason why I, or anyone else would want to shop at Walmart. I find it interesting that no one will give you their last name or ID number (except Ana), and they spend the majority of the time putting you on hold so they can pass the buck, all the while telling you how sorry they are!!! In reality, they couldn't care less, they just want to pass you onto someone else so they don't have to deal with you.

Having said all this, Walmart is TRASH and not only will I not get another card, I will no longer patronize your store. I am starting a Blog as well, and when my sister speaks with Diane Sawyer (this is happening first thing in the morning), I am sure they will be contacting you for comments (especially the lawyers).

Thanks everyone for stopping by and checking out my hub on the Walmart Money Card. I only wrote this from my personal experience, and I have no way of helping anyone get their balances. You need to go to the Walmart Money card site to do that. I have had my card for close to a year now and it works out great for me. I also have a PayPal card, and my new job puts my pay directly on a reloadable card also. It makes it easier for me to control my spending this way but is not for everybody.

Unfortunately the Walmart card is one of the most expensive cards you could buy. http://hubpages.com/hub/Corporate-American-Robbing I just finished reading an independent report of prepaid cards and the Walmart Card averaged $21.54 a month in fees! Walmart takes cash. So why give your money away like that? People think that Walmart is cheaper. They are not always cheaper. They drive out local business, get special tax incentives from local government. Then once the competition is gone they actually raise prices. I recently needed Antifreeze. So I went to Walmart because it was close by. And they wanted $9.50 for a gallon of Peak... I went to the counter to pay. When I got there I realized it was 50/50 mix! It was half water! They didn't even have a gallon of REAL antifreeze. So I put it back. Went to the local autoparts store. I paid $11.50 for a gallon of REAL antifreeze and it was the higher quality 5 year product. You really have to watch what you buy at Walmart.

Walmart also pays an average wage of $9.56 per hour and only covers 24% of their employees with Health Insurance. Conversely Costco pays $16 an hour with just over 80% of their employees covered with Health Insurance. And Costco has 1/3rd the turnover. And now for the real kicker... Costco Employees make their company more money per employee. Costco CEO pays himself $350,000 a year. Walmart's CEO pays himself over $5 Million a year. Walmart is duping the American Public.

My husband and I Have been using this card for about 2-3 years now. As long as you load enough in a month there are no charges. Yes he pay the money to cash his check at Walmart, but he was doing that to begin with. We love it! When it expires we get a new card with a new date..just like any other credit card.

Robin Davis  says:

I started using the card in November of last year. I love it. Quite honestly folks, I am terrible at writing down gas purchases and things that don't come out right away. It seems every month I am overdrawn on my bank account. This little card has been a great tool for assisting me in learning money management. I am terrible at it and I admit it. Paying out over $3,000 in one year in overdraft and other fee's, the Walmart card made more sense for me personnally.
