PETA Against Vice President Joe Biden
65
The Current Crisis
In this time of economic turmoil, pirates holding Americans hostage and the other pressing issues of the day, I appreciate that PETA has focused attention on what is truly important: Vice President Joe Biden bought a puppy from a dog breeder instead of getting a dog from a shelter.
Vice President Biden and his wife Jill obtained a German Shephard from a dog breeder in Pennsylvania around Christmas time. Apparently, Jill Biden promised her husband the family could get a dog if Obama and Biden won the election. The dog was delivered shortly after the inauguration and the family named him Champ.
Now the group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, has raised an issue with the fact that Biden bought the puppy from a breeder rather than getting the puppy from a Shelter. The Breeder now regrets selling the puppy to the Bidens because of all the negative press and has even received some death threats.
- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): The animal rights organization
PETA's animal rights campaigns include ending fur and leather use meat and dairy consumption fishing hunting trapping factory farming circuses bull fighting rodeos and animal experimentation
PETA Has Got This One Wrong
I don't question PETA's motives. They are an organization that is attempting to do a good thing; ensure the ethical treament of animals and help saves the lives of thousands of dogs and cats that currently reside in shelters. However, there is a time and place to raise this type of issue and now is not the time.
The Country is in the middle of a real economic crisis and real threats exist abroad. The Obama admistration has taken some positive steps in regards to the economy. The stock market has rebounded a bit and the jobless rate is slowing. While not out of the woods, positive steps have been taken.
Further, Obama faces real threats abroad. Pirates, yes pirates, captures Americans off the Somalian Coast. Obama sent in Navy Seals to rescue the Captain. The mission was successful. Of course two hundred people are still being held captive.
The problem with what PETA is doing is making noise about this non-issue right now. Instead of talking up the economy or raising the issue of Americans being held captive abroad in Somalia and North Korea (See My Other Blog Re Detained In North Korea and Please Help If You Can) CNN is telling this story. Why? Because they can show newsreel of Pamela Anderson.
Stop Feeding The Beast
Worst of all, this story is feeding the right wing commentators who never miss an opportunity to rail against the Obama administration. And why shouldn't they? PETA is considered a liberal group and here it is embarrasing the Democratic Administration. That itself is a story and one that the Right Wing will tell over and over again.
PETA needs to do what is right by the group they represent; the animals. By raising these type of issues in order to capture publicity only alienates the very people they need to exist: Liberals like me. Further, it makes the Obama Administration lose credibility. When the media doesn't have to report of successes and reports on embarrasing non-issues like this, the public loses faith. Nobody lost their house, job or savings. Nobody was killed by a terrorist. Joe Biden bought a dog.

Well, I don't think people are losing faith, yet. And there are signs that better things are coming.
But the media these days is a joke. Fox, CNN, Local News - All second rate compared to TMZ these days.
As always Tony, a joy to hear your thoughts.
bgpappa~ Yes, people are losing faith. Nothing is really getting done. Everyone knows it won't happen overnight, but c'mon...counterproductive movements will never help. But that's a WHOLE different hub! Here it is: I cannot stand Obama, and I think I hate Biden even more. HOWEVER, what the hell is wrong with the guy buying a dog from a breeder? You're right, it's ridiculous. There are indeedy bigger issues at hand in the world. PETA wants to tout a noble cover, but uses back-asswards tactics to demonstrate, yes, at all the wrong times... Good hub, and I'll watch for the fire from the PETA lovers...! :p
Thanks for your comments Amy.
I think it is an indictment on the media as much as PETA. PETA's tactics are horrible, but they work because the media would rather report about this than the real issues. In the last hour, four or five dog stories, no mention of pirates. Odd.
True - I should have mentioned that, because I think the same. The media apparently has trouble sorting out what we want/should hear.
Unless the dog in question (Champ) came from an abusive environment, why is this even a PETA issue? There is and always will be a market for purebred dogs. Some people prefer to raise their own pets from puppyhood. What is wrong with that? They would seem to be the kind of positive, responsible pet owners that PETA would support.
If it comes down to a media showdown, I'm putting my money on the Westminster Kennel Club over PETA any day...
BTW -- How long do you think it will be before PETA starts in on the new Obama dog, Beau? I hear he is a Portuguese Water Spaniel or something and a gift from Ted Kennedy. How shocking! How awful. How irresponsible...
PETA is full of a bunch of nutcases. They have been doing strange things in the name of publicity for a while now. This surprises you??
Pam Anderson is a prime example of the type of people they have representing them. How does she think all that plastic surgery and those implants were deemed safe for use on humans? They test that stuff on animals.
I admit, animal testing is cruel, but in a lot of ways, necessary. Cancer drugs, cures for all kinds of diseases, vaccines are all tested on animals before they are tested with human subjects.
I don't support mistreatment of animals. I don't like puppy mills, but not all dog breeders are evil. My uncle was a dog breeder, and he treated all of his animals very humanely, and was very good about making sure the dogs were properly taken care of. His dogs were like family, not dollar signs.
Like I said, PETA is known for thier nut-ball ways, and their publicity seeking. I find it funny that you give Obama credit for the issue with saving the captain held hostage by the pirates. He legally had no other option. From the way he was absent during most of it, it seemed as if he was hoping he could ignore it, and it would go away.
Well bgpappa the women have spoken and I cannot debate them . They are some of my favorites .
Tony, they are some of my favorites too.
To respond about Obama, I disagree that he was required to take action. I know Sean Hannity is spouting that off today, but from what I read he was legally required to be involved and make the final decision. Because it was not an extension of the war on terror and therefore there was no command and control on the ground but rather a hostage situation, Obama had to make the final decision. I give him credit for making the right one. But if you have non Fox News information about what Obama was required to do, I would love to see it and will take back my remarks.
As for animals, I am not supporting animal cruelty either. But I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a dog from a breeder either. As for the Obama dog, same situation. Why is this even a story? He promised his kids a dog and they got it. OK, end of story. Shouldn't be told by either side.
I don't recall a large PETA outcry against Michael Vick. What Joe Biden? Does not compute.
Thats a good point mighty mom. Where were they? Perhaps because there was already outcry, there was no point to get involved.
But what kind of outcry are they trying to cause with the Biden dog? It's not abused. It's just cute. As they say in the news biz, it's a non-story.
Years ago I used to do publicity for Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus when they came to town. Every year we had to be on "PETA watch" because some years they came out to protest about the elephants. Have also seen them throw red paint on women in NYC who had the audacity to wear fur. I agree with what Anna Marie said. Those people are kinda nutty. Imagine if they put even 1/2 as much thought and energy into helping their fellow humans.
Well, I'm climbing off my MM soapbox now. Time to go cuddle with my own little rescue pets. Gremlin & Storm (pound), Patty (a construction site) and Jimmy (saved from a grass fire). Ain't no way PETA's coming after me!!!
Great points MM and you are always welcome to bring your soapbox here.
I am not sure what they are trying to do here, why I wrote the hub.
And I agree their tactics are nutty. Nutty is not what we need right now, we need sane.
PETA reminds me of a lot of people I know. They talk and talk about what is wrong with this and what is wrong with that, but I don't see a lot of them doing anything. They would do themselves a lot more good if they promoted the fact that they volunteered at shelters, took in shelter animals themselves, funded the thousands of under-funded shelters, that sort of thing, instead of making strange commercials where women rub fruit on themselves.
As far as the Obama issue is concerned, you are right. I have no idea whether or not he was legally obligated. My real issue is why he seemed to be absent until the issue was resolved. I do think he should have made a statement before the whole thing was resolved. I feel he is showing himself to be weak. With the cries of retribution from the pirates, we need a strong leader who can make the right decisions quickly.
Fair points Anna. I agree that woman rubbing fruit on themselves doesn't solve anything, only serves as Entertainment. Their point gets lost.
As for Obama, their statement was he didn't want to tip his hand by speaking in public but was very involved behind the scenes. I am not saying its true, only that is what the Admistration is saying. As for the pirates calling for retribution, we will see. There are still more hostages so there is more work to be done
bgpapa - recently we were on a PEYA sight (my husband was alerted by email from some fishermen's site) and read their piece on how they object to fishing. they claim that fish have the same intelligence as nonhuman promates (i'd like to see you teach a fish sign language) and that we should start to think of them as sea kittens. that's right. sea kittens. check it out. sea kittens
Wow, it is a good thing that humans around the world don't eat fish as a main source of food. That is taking it a bit too far.
Thanks.
Let's be honest, as someone previously has pointed out, Pamela Anderson makes the case against PETA. She perfectly represents their ideology. Take the one issue that you can partly understand, inflate it ad nauseum to stupidity, and claim credit for trying to do some good when you've actually accomplished nothing. Wait a minute! am I talking about PETA, or the GOP? Oh, yes, PETA...... Pam Anderson is so perfect for their cause- artificial, enhanced, shallow, vapid, blathering and still making a mint. Yes, Virginia, good looks and exposing oneself alone can create success in america.
Always appreciate your comments Icon. Of course, you caught on to my underlying theme: PETA stop acting like the Republican Machine. And yes, they are hurting the liberal cause in America by allowing Sean Hannity point to them as the example of a liberal. They are not.
