Top 5 Rock Bands of the 21st Century

There are many rock bands out there that have evolved over the past eight years, but only a few of them have really made a difference in the music world today. Of course, everyone has different tastes when it comes to rock music, but when researching to see which bands really made an impact on the 21st Century, these five bands seemed to appear wherever I looked.

  1. Muse: Muse are an English rock band who are best known for their energetic and intense live performances. Their music is often compared to Radiohead, but with a louder, heavier rock tone. Muse actually released their debut album ‘Showbiz" at the end of 1999, but didn't really become a big hit until their third album ‘Absolution' was released in 2003. Their biggest hits off this album would have to be ‘Time Is Running Out' and ‘Hysteria'. They released their fourth album ‘Black Holes and Revelations' in 2006. They have been quoted by many as "the greatest band in the world", but they've also been quoted as "the best Radiohead cover band out there". Personally, I think they're one of the greatest bands that rock has seen in a long time. Their music is unique and captivating.

  2. My Chemical Romance: Personally, I love these guys. The first time I heard "Helena" I fell in love with the gothic, emotional rocker sound of it. Next came "Welcome To The Black Parade" which was more of an upbeat rock song, so it showed they had some diveristy in their music skill set. These guys have a lot of talent and I hope they continue to do well in the future.

  3. Audioslave: Audioslave caused quite a hype when they first came together. The band consisted of former Soundgarden frontman, Chris Cornell, and former Rage Against the Machine guitarist, Tom Morello, so for anyone who was a fan of both Rage and Soundgarden, their music was like a dream come true. They sounded like a mix of Soundgarden's 90's grunge rock and Rage's aggressive, hard-rock instrumentation. Their debut self-titled album was released in November of 2002, which reached #7 on the Billboard chart after only one week. The band released two more albums, ‘Out of Exile', in 2004 and ‘Revelations' in 2006. They broke up in 2007, shortly after the release of ‘Revelations', due to "personality conflicts and musical differences," Cornell stated. Cornell has since decided to tour solo, and released a solo album "Carry On" in May of 2007.

  4. The White Stripes: The White Stripes are a grammy-winning rock duo, consisting of singer/guitarist Jack White and his wife, Meg White (drums). Their music is unlike anything else you've ever heard before. It's been described as "50's inspired rock music." I've found that the majority of people either love them or despise them, there's rarely an in between. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1999, but they didn't become a musical success until the release of their third album, "White Blood Cells", which was their first major label album and featured their hit single, "Fell In Love With A Girl". Their most recent album "Icky Thump" was released in 2007, and has been compared to Black Sabbath's earlier albums.

  5. The Killers: The Killers are a Las-Vegas based rock band most famous for their hit singles "Mr. Brightside" and "When You Were Young". Their debut album, "Hot Fuss" was released in 2004, followed by the release of their second album, "Sam's Town" in 2006. The first two albums have sold over 10 millions copies to date. Although they are an American rock band, they sound like they're a British rock band. When I first heard them, I had no idea they were from the states. Nevertheless, they've become quite a hit to teens everywhere over the past few years.

Honorable mentions:

A Perfect Circle: Led by Tool frontman, Maynard Kennan, A Perfect Circle released their debut album in 2000. They had quite a following since Tool is a very well-known band, but in comparison to Tool, their music has much more of a relaxed, mellow vibe to it.

Tenacious D : Who knew Jack Black could sing? I mean, come on, we all knew the guy could act and that he's hilarious, but singing seemed out of the question. When I first heard that Jack Black was in a band with one other guy (Kyle Gass), it seemed like a joke. There's no way that a comedian could form a band with one other guy and be anywhere close to talented, right? Wrong. Believe it or not, Jack Black actually has a great voice. Their music is kind of like mixing acoustic rock with a stand up comedy act, but surprisingly, some of their songs are not only funny, but pretty catchy.

Velvet Revolver: Velvet Revolver is yet another collaboration of well-known music artists thrown together. They not only have STP's frontman Scott Weiland as their lead singer, but some of the remaining members of Guns and Roses as well: Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. The band released their first album, "Contraband" in 2003, which sounded a bit like a mix of old-school rock and roll and 90's grunge. Hopefully Weiland will get his act together soon so we can see more of what these guys are really made of.

30 Seconds To Mars: When I firstheard these guys, I had no idea that the lead singer was "Jordan Catalano" from the TV series "My So-Called Life", AKA Jared Leto. What's up with all these actors showing their vocal talents these days? The band actually released their self-titled debut album in 2002, but didn't become a hit until their second album was released in 2005. Their first hit single, ‘The Kill" actually won the MTV2 award in 2006 and I have to admit, the lyrics may be a little tormented, but overall it's a very emotional, powerful rock song.

I'd have to agree with you on the White Stripes, but the others.... Well, I've just never gotten into them. I saw the White Stripes in RI just before they broke out. It wasa this small dingy little place and there was just a small group of people there. It was great!!!!

Nice hub!!!

GREAT HUB !! I have to agree with vreccc though THE WHITE STRIPES really are a band that as you say "really made an impact on the 21st Century" and I look forward to seeing that impact. A lot of these groups are bands that no one will remember in a decade.

Tool & Rage & Soundgarden = legit

spinoff groups = Temple of the Dog

The Killers have potential but they'll probably never become THE CURE like so desperately seem to want to do.

I will look into MUSE based on your amazing hub though.

His other great new video is for "27 Jennifers" That song is addictive!

Lyrics:

I rode the bus with 27 Jennifers.

16 Jens 10 Jennys and then there was her.

Yep, believe it or not, they're genres are categorized as "Rock/Pop"

I actually don't like The Killers, but they are one of the bigger bands of the 2000's

I realized earlier that I forgot one of my favorites: My Chemical Romance! I like those guys too

Krystle and RB, Built to Spill I think is one of the greatest rock bands of the last decade. They are not wellknown, but there are 2 things that really impress me about them:

1- Wall-of-sound guitar.

2- Twists and turns in every song. they never start like they begin. It's like listen to a story unfold.

Have you two heard of them. I started a hub on them but it sucks right now. I need to do it more justice

I grew up in a generation where most people didn't even like GREEN DAY b/c of the whining Billie Joe does sometimes and now there's a whole genre of whiney pseudo-punks in dark eye liner.

I love Green Day but it's sorta their fault.

Same way it's Madonna's fault we have to put up with Britney and her ilk.  She proved that image and style were more important than talent.

Kudos to vreccc cause Built To Spill is real music. I'm not a big fan but every song I here by them is quality.
Didn't they break-up?

vreccc  says:

Nope, they are still in full swing. Head over to my hub where you can find some video of them in concert:

http://hubpages.com/hub/Built-To-Spill

I just saw them in concert a few months ago and had chat with the lead singer. They aren't breaking up, but they don't have an album in the works right.

I apologize for the hub. I don't know how to write about music so I just sound like a zit-faced groupy. Maybe you could give me some ideas

Cheers!!

Hoo-ahhh to real rock! RB I think they lean more towards the pop side with a little rock influence but still good music. They're catchy!

I just started writing about music as well, it's tough because there's only so many adjectives you can use to describe music. I write for Starpulse Entertainment, which is where I post my articles from: http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2008/02/26

You're best bet is to google music reviews so you can get an idea of different writing styles.

I will check out Built to Spill as long as your both check out OURS!

Exactly. I wanna tell you so you'll whip out your secret song and we all benefit.

Re: OURS  -- I have heard Kill The Band before but only cause it's on a CMJ Compilation I have.

I still have the CD my friend gave me of BUILT TO SPILL & MODEST MOUSE (who to his credit were not famous yet) all the songs are short & simple but the musicians sound like they have a grip on something that we the listener should long to understand.......or not.

I'm a big modest mouse fan too. I found them back in 1996. I don't like the stuff they hit it big with last year. Listen to that older stuff and you'll hear something quite different.

WAIT A MINUTE WAIT A MINUTE WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!

hOW hAVE wE GONE tHIS lONG WITHOUT discussing the best band of the 2000s besides Jack White and that is the incredible aussies WOLFMOTHER.

They frkin rock so hard that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant asked them to Play two of their songs while Led Zep was inducted into the Brit Hall of Fame.

Appletree, Woman, Dimension and Love Train are all great songs by Wolfmother.

Not to mention SPOON is good too.  and the ARCTIC MONKEYS have their moments too.

The only reliable artist out there though is BECK.    EVERY TIME.
