Top 10 Songs

Updated on May 24, 2014

This article contains a list of the top 10 songs, along with link to a video of each of the top 10 songs where possible. The top 10 list is given in descending order, with the song at number 10 being towards the top of the list of the top 10 songs and the best song (number one) being towards the bottom.

These are my own personal feelings of the top 10 songs of all time, although most, if not all, of these will also appear on other lists of the top 10 songs of all time or top 100 songs of all time. If you have any feedback on this list of top 10 songs, whether it be that you agree with my choices for the top 10, or disagree with the songs which I have included, please do not hesitate to use the comment section below. I apologise for there only being two videos embedded in this article and three links.  This is due to difficulty in finding a free, legal version of the song for many of the top 10 songs.

10. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

Number ten on the list of the top 10 songs of all time is the 1978 Dire Straits song Sultans of Swing. At the time this song was released Dire Straits were a relatively unknown band from Newcastle, England and so this track failed to chart, however it is now has one of the most recognisable guitar solos of any song, as well as great lyrics and this is why it is included in this list of top 10 songs.

9. Bob Dylan - Blowin' In The Wind

I have placed the Bob Dylan song Blowin' in the Wind at number 9 on the top 10 songs. The song was originally released in 1963 and is probably the most famous of Bob Dylan's songs. It is classed by many to be a protest song against war and civil rights, which accounts for part of the reason I have included it on this list.

8. Michael Jackson - Bad

Michael Jackson is considered to be one of the greatest musical artists of all time who made some great songs, and so it was to be expected that one would feature on this list of top 10 songs. I chose the song Bad which was initially released in 1987 and can be found on the album by the same name. The song Bad is at number 8 on this list of top 10 song. Link to the song on Youtube.

7. Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger

Oasis are possibly one of the biggest British bands of the last 20 years, who were a key part of the Britpop scene. This song came off the album What's The Story Morning Glory and was released in 1996. I have placed it at number 7 on my list of top 10 songs of all times because of the effect it has had on the UK music scene in the late 90s and 00s.

6. Eagles - Hotel California

Hotel California by the Eagles is number six on this list of top 10 songs of all time. Released in 1977, the song is widely believed to be a musical interpretation of the American dream. Hotel California has the rare distinction of having sold 1,000,000 copies in both digital downloads and physical form, which shows it's popularity and another reason for including it as one of the best 10 songs of all time.

5. Elvis Presly - Suspicious Minds

Elvis Presley, Elvis, The King of Rock 'n' Roll or The King are all the same person. The fact that there are so many names for the same person shows the effect he had on popular music worldwide. There have been many famous tracks, but to me Suspicious Minds is the one which should appear on the top 10 songs of all time.

4. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen are possibly one of the most famous British bands of all time, partly due to their charismatic lead singer Freddie Mercury, who was also famous for being openly gay when it was still relatively rare for public figures to be so. Bohemian Rhapsody is a song which is made up of a series of relatively separate parts and yet the whole song flows relatively well. An epic song, which most music lovers know all the words to despite it's length, it only just misses out on the top 3 of my best songs of all time.

3. The Beatles - Hey Jude

The Beatles are arguably the biggest recording artist of all time, with a massive catalogue of hits. Certainly, they are the most popular artist on Wikipedia in terms of page views, despite having split up in 1970! The song Hey Jude is a very long song and has sold over eight million copies worldwide since it's release in 1968. For me Hey Jude is very deserving of it's 3rd place on the list of the top 10 songs.

2. Frank Sinatra - My Way

Coming second on this list of top 10 songs is My Way which was made famous by Frank Sinatra. This song has an interesting history. The music was for an old French song, but the lyrics were re-written in English, with a few changes, to make My Way. The song has been covered by many artists from many different genres, which shows the high regard it is held in by a diverse range of musicians. It tells the story of a person on their death-bed who is looking back on his life in a way which makes themselves happy for doing things in the way they saw fit.

1. John Lennon - Imagine

John Lennon was a member of The Beatles and upon the band splitting he continued to release songs until he was murdered. Throughout his solo career he, along with his partner Yoko Ono were campaigners for world peace and harmony and this song tried to capture John Lennon's feelings on what the world could potentially be like. Imagine is now considered to be one of the most influential songs of all time having been the focal song for many anti-war and equality movements and continues to be to this day. More than that though, it is a thoroughly good song which is why it is number one on my list of the top 10 songs.

Other songs

By the very nature of a top 10 list there can only be 10 entries.  However, this meant that many very good songs were missed out.  As such, what follows is a list of some of the songs which I consider to be very good, but not quite good enough to make it into the top 10 songs.  Note that these songs are in no particular order.

Radiohead - Creep

Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise

REM - Everybody Hurts

Aerosmith - Don't Wanna Miss a Thing

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You

Elton John - Your Song

Guns n Roses - Sweet Child of Mine

Don McLean - American Pie

Louis Armstrong - Wonderful World
