What Are Under Deck Waterproofing Systems

Under deck waterproofing systems are a great way to create a usable space under your normally wet or worthless deck area.  If you wish you could enjoy the space under your deck more often, then you need to consider utilizing a method to help divert the water out of your space.

While a deck is a great thing, often times the space under your deck can be ugly or worthless.  With the exposed boards and rafters, spider webs, leaves and other debris can accumulate and cause an unsightly eyesore that makes sitting under your deck not so enjoyable.

By using an under deck ceiling to create a waterproof liner on your deck ceiling, you can really turn that ugly, unenjoyable space into a great location to entertain or relax.

Two Methods of Under Deck Waterproofing

There are generally two methods to use when you want to create under deck waterproofing systems for your home. Both are simple enough for a do it yourselfer to install, however one is installed during the deck construction and the other after the deck is built.

The first method is a liner type material that is laid over the joists of your deck that creates a waterproof membrane. The deck boards are then put down over this membrane which creates the waterproof layer. This is a good system that requires some planning before you install your deck. One benefit is the costs are usually lower due to lower materials cost. However, if a hole or leak develops for whatever reason, you could be stuck with a leak or trying to remove boards to repair the membrane.

The more accepted and most popular option is to install a traditional under deck ceiling. This popular option has lots of different styles that you can choose from. If you want a simple and clean look, or something more fancy, this is what you should consider.

Similar to vinyl siding in how it attaches to each piece next to it, many under deck ceilings offer drainage systems with gutters to help divert the water away from your porch or outdoor living area. If a leak should occur or debris accumulates causing problems, you can easily access or clean the area.

Both systems are great, it just depends on if your deck is already built or if you are in the planning stages. You can install both systems if you really feel the need, such as if you want a decorative ceiling on your deck area that can be viewed from below.
