Update your Facebook or Twitter Status on your Blackberry

Updated on October 24, 2010

Here are the ways I've learned to update your Facebook status using a Blackberry. Any one of these 5 ways work; the status update takes up to 30 seconds max to propagate through to Facebook (usually only around 10 seconds).

Here are the ways you can do it:

  • The Facebook app for Blackberry (does not require Twitter)
  • SMS/text message (via Twitter + TwitterSync)
  • Gtalk (Google Talk) (via Twitter + TwitterSync)
  • Twitter app for Blackberry (via Twitter + TwitterSync)
  • Jott (via Twitter + TwitterSync) - a toll-free 800 number!

Option 1 - Facebook's app for the Blackberry

This is a great option, since it doesn't require routing through Twitter, and the app allows you to upload pictures, respond to messages and other fun Facebook stuff, too.

However, sometimes it doesn't seem to synch real-time, so I've seen 3-day-old statuses listed there with the "Fetching..." message churning away with no end in sight.

Option 2 - Via Twitter update by SMS/Text Message

  1. Set up a Twitter account here
  2. Set up your phone on your Twitter account here (involves entering in your number & verifying a text message they send you)
  3. Install TwitterSync on your Facebook account here
  4. Make sure your TwitterSync settings with your Twitter account details, and give it permission to update your Facebook status
  5. SMS/Text your status update to 40404.

It's best to start with the pattern "is doing..." so that both Facebook and Twitter show "Myusername is doing..."

Option 3 - Via Twitter update by Gtalk (Google Talk)

  1. Set up a Twitter account here
  2. Set up your IM setting here to "on"
  3. Install TwitterSync on your Facebook account here
  4. Make sure your TwitterSync settings with your Twitter account details, and give it permission to update your Facebook status
  5. Send your status update via Gtalk to twitter@twitter.com

It's best to start with the pattern "is doing..." so that both Facebook and Twitter show "Myusername is doing..."

Option 4 - Via Twitter update by Twitter BB app

  1. Set up a Twitter account here
  2. Install TwitterSync on your Facebook account here
  3. Make sure your TwitterSync settings with your Twitter account details, and give it permission to update your Facebook status
  4. Download the Twitterberry app for Blackberry here (direct over air | via computer - IE only)
  5. Load Twitterberry on your BB, enter your Twitter credentials, and enter your status update under "What are you doing?"

It's best to start with the pattern "is doing..." so that both Facebook and Twitter show "Myusername is doing..."

Option 5 - Via Twitter update by Jott

  1. Set up a Twitter account here
  2. Install TwitterSync on your Facebook account here
  3. Make sure your TwitterSync settings with your Twitter account details, and give it permission to update your Facebook status
  4. Set up a Jott account (free) here
  5. Follow the painfully easy instructions here (Jott transcribes messages remarkably well; it usually takes about 3-5 minutes)

It's best to start with the pattern "is doing..." so that both Facebook and Twitter show "Myusername is doing..."
