Used and Preowned Rolex Watches: Are They Worth It?

Updated on December 30, 2011

You know what they say about women and wine - they get better with age. The same can certainly be said about a Rolex watch.

Buying a Pre-owned Rolex Watch

If you think only people who can't afford a new Rolex would resort to buying a pre-owned Rolex, think again. Many watch enthusiasts would strongly disagree with this statement, including yours truly. As a matter of fact, I have no qualms about admitting that I once purchased a used Yacht-Master, which kept on ticking with amazing accuracy and precision for many years. And I couldn't even begin to tell you how many watch collectors are willing to wait years and pay exorbitant prices for the privilege of wearing a preowned Rolex Daytona around their wrists. The fact is that with proper care and maintenance, a Rolex will last forever.

Preowned Rolex: Less depreciation than new

Why, you may ask, are used Rolex watches so prized? Think about it as you would about a motorcar. If you buy a new one, it loses up to 30 percent of its value the minute you drive it off the lot. Likewise, as soon as you slip on a new Rolex, its value will take a dive (even if you are not wearing a Submariner or a Sea-Dweller!). A used watch, however, will not depreciate immediately after purchase.

You can find true bargains online, but be sure to ask for the watch's certification.

Rolex Certification

If you want to get the best value out of your pre-owned Rolex - and who doesn't? - you have to make sure you purchase it only from a reputable dealer. After all, you wouldn't buy a used Jaguar from a chap doing business in a back alley, would you?

A reputable used Rolex dealer is your best insurance that you will not walk away with a lemon. That is because he or she will provide you with a certificate of authenticity, a warranty, invoices and serial numbers.

Buying from online auctions, such as eBay, has become popular, although online dealers should also be able to provide the necessary certification to prove the watch you'd like to buy is genuine.

If you are still hesitant about purchasing a used Rolex, listen to this: Nobody will ever know, not even your hairdresser, whether the superbly crafted, luxurious timepiece around your wrist is new or pre-owned. Such is the power of a Rolex!

How much is my Rolex worth?

If you're looking to sell your authentic Rolex watch, it's a good idea to do a little research before you sell. A lot of research can be done on the internet by searching for your watch on a search engine and seeing the results. Another option is to go to a trusted jeweler and have it appraised. Once you have decided on a price, you have a couple of options. You can find a dealer online to sell to, try to sell to a local jeweler, or sell your watch on eBay. If you decide to sell your watch on eBay, be sure you are absolutely familiar with selling on eBay. Your watch is too pricey of an item to not know what you are doing.

Would you consider buying a pre-owned Rolex?
