Victory Junction Gang Camp - North Carolina Camp Enriching Children's Lives

Updated on September 6, 2007

Located in Randleman, North Carolina, the Victory Junction Gang Camp is enriching the lives of children with serious illnesses or chronic medical conditions by providing camping experiences that are fun and empowering in an environment that is safe and at facilities staffed to provide any needed medical attention. The camp was founded by NASCAR driver Kyle Petty and his wife Pattie, in honor of their son Adam.

The idea for the camp came from Adam, who was also a stock car driver. Adam was killed in a practice crash in 2000. Determined to carry out his vision, his parents began talks with actor Paul Newman, founder of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps. The Association of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps is a not-for-profit organization that assists existing Hole in the Wall Gang Camps and camps still in the stages of formation. The association aids member camps in providing unique recreational and therapeutic camping experiences to children throughout the world at no charge. Victory Junction Gang Camp is a member of Newman's association.

The camp was built on land donated by seven-time NASCAR champion Richard Petty, and his wife Lynda. It relies on the donations of corporations, organizations and individuals. Many racing drivers, teams, and sponsors have made huge donations to the camp. Most children that attend Victory Junction would not be able to attend a camp otherwise because of their medical needs. The camp is operational throughout the year and serves children ages 7 to 15 with a variety of health issues. During the Summer, there are sessions devoted to specific diseases. Up to 125 children can be accommodated. In the Spring, Fall, and Winter, family weekends are offered with up to 32 families per weekend. The size of the sessions are kept relatively small to allow the children to have personal attention. Victory Junction primarily serves North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, but the number of campers from other areas of the country continues to grow.

Victory Junction Gang Camp has a racing theme with the look and feel of a racetrack. Facilities at the camp include a swimming pool, game room, computer lab, an outdoor recreation area, and a top-notch medical clinic. The camp had a special guest in October 2006 when President George W. Bush visited. He joined campers on the NASCAR simulator and posed for pictures with campers and staff. His visit was due to his interest in the wonderful humanitarian work that is going on at the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
