Sailing has been with man long before christ. Sailing is done by controlling the boat we pieces of canvas cloth called sails. The Power of sailing the boat is drived from the wind. By adjusting the rigging, rudder, and dagger, a sailor is able to manupilate the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the speed and direction of the boat. A boat or a sailing vessel is able to move forward because it has been pushed by the strength of the wind in that direction.

How The Energy For Sailing Is Generated

In sailing, it is not possible to move directly into the wind because the angle of attack would be zero. However, its possible to move in any other direction. One is able to do so by manipulating the relative movement of the wind and water speed. All what is necessary is a difference between the speed of the wind and the speed of water current. It is through combining the aerodynamic force from the wind(sails) and the hydrodynamic force from the water (hull) that will allow you to manupilate the boat in any direction other than directly into the wind direction. This is like squeezing wet soap in your hands and will shoot out perpendicular to the two forces of your hands – this is how the energy for sailing is generated.

Sailing is an art by itself and it takes time to learn. The wind and ocean current is the source of energy that you have to manipulate to power your manual boat. But too much of ocean currents and strong winds are not good either. They bring rough sea conditions. Manouvering a boat in rough weather due to the flow of the current, wind and sea conditions is very dangerous.

Fishermen

Rough weather conditions will include strong currents from sea breeze, land breeze, frontal systems, depressions and hurricanes. Fishermen make their living by working in these harsh conditions. Like other activities at sea, fishing is an enjoyable sport but deadly and the potential for disaster or tragidy is very high.
