Waimanalo's Turquoise Waters
63Nature is my medicine. -Sara Moss-Wolfe
It could have something to do with the fact that turquoise is a favorite gem and color. I have a need to go to a place to relax and the sea does that to me. I am prone to nervousness, and according to people who practise holistic medicine, turquoise has a calming effect on patients. The color is actually used to treat patients who have panic attacks or mania. To a lesser degree, mainstream Psychiatric hospitals also use turquoise and other light shades of blue and green to calm patients by painting the walls these colors. We can surmise then, that the sea will do the same, if not more.
It makes sense that Waimanalo beach is unlike any other for me. I keep going back, and i dream of living very close by. Really, i have never seen the sea as turquoise as i have seen it in Waimanalo, and i have been to a lot of beaches. The color turquoise is a slightly greenish shade of cyan, sometimes a mixture of pale blue and green. It is beautiful indeed!
Waimanalo means, “protected precious waters“ and the locals call it "God’s Country" because of its majestic mountains, unrivaled beaches, and tranquil atmosphere, Actually, Waimanalo Beach is considered as a nautical town because parts of it are on the ocean or touch tidal bodies of water such as inlets and tidal rivers. The town has a total area of 3.0 square miles and 45.56 percent of that is water.
Famous author James Michener wrote his novel Hawaii in Waimanalo. While it does not carry the name recognition of places like Waikiki, Kailua, Northshore, scenes of Waimanalo have actually been showcased on television screens for nearly 30 years. The estate that Tom Selleck’s "Magnum P.I." character called home is actually located in Waimanalo, many of the beautiful beach scenes that were shown on "Baywatch Hawaii" were shot at Waimanalo Beach. Adam Sandler’s movie, "50 First Dates," featured a great deal of footage of Waimanalo’s Sea Life Park.
Waimanalo Beach is one of the longest beaches on Oahu, about three miles long. The beach park is one of the more favorite in Oahu, simply for the reason that it is very close to urban Honolulu and suburban Kailua and Kaneohe. It has a very nice shallow sandbar, and the surf is about one to two feet high, making it ideal for kids and novice wave riders. Some of the favorite pastimes here are beachcombing, fishing, surfing, swimming, and wave riding. The park also provides ample shade with the ironwood trees all year.
Waimanalo is located on Hawaii's main island, Oahu, a short drive over the mountains from Honolulu Airport. It's close to the city but retains a small-town country feel. A few locally owned lunch stops and grocery shops dot the highway. None of the buildings are taller than two stories. Big city nightlife in Waikiki is a short drive away, but Waimanalo is quiet at night.
Nearby Kailua also has a full range of restaurants, stores, services and nightspots.
Well-known restaurants close by include Buzz’s Original Steak House, where former U.S. Presidents have dined, Lucy’s Bar and Grill and Board Riders Restaurant. Again, do not be surprised to see limos in the area, and celebrities who do not have to worry about being recognized. In such magnificent landscape, no one dare compete for attention and believe me, nature at it's best makes us all equal. And nothing can be more wonderful and so relaxing.
Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think. ~Robert Henri

Thanks again Aqua! Come right away!
Beautiful photos, IslandVoice! I find those who have never seen turquoise water can't believe it until they do. I experienced it when I lived and worked on the Spanish Main (northern coastal areas of Venezuela). The water is turquoise and clear, so the shore bottom can be seen. Those who live near such waters (the Pacific, Caribbean, etc.) are truly blessed. Great hub, IslandVoice.
Yes Tina, you are so right. I myself couldn't believe how the ocean can provide such color. We are blessed to experience such. I've heard about Spain, as you mentioned, Thanks for the ok on this hub.
