Want Home Cooking on I-95? Eat at Plums!
If you’re traveling North or South on I-95 through southeastern Georgia, You may want to check out a spot not far from exits 87 or 90. Richmond Hill, Georgia is home to some of the best home style cooking on the planet! Yes a little spot in the business district of a little town just 11 miles south of Savannah, serves Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, and is a local favorite. Gary Breon, the owner, has been operating Plums Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop since 2003 when he purchased it from its previous owners. It was in fact struggling at the time and coupled with ill health on the part of the original owners, Plums presented Gary with a challenge. One he saw as a chance to use all of his Management and Leadership skills, he developed as a Major and Public Health Officer in the Army, and turn it around.
Turn it around he did, his team building and management skills are immediately apparent as one watches the Staff operate the restaurant like a fine Swiss watch. Customers are greeted with a smile, the food is prepared with efficiency and care, by Jackie in the kitchen, served hot by Michelle, in the mornings and Mike in the Afternoons, Assistant Manager Adam does a bit of everything and supervises when Gary is not there. You can see the pride they all take in their work and as Michelle says “I Love my regular customers and I have a great Boss.”
This attitude gives the customers a great experience, and fosters deep and lasting loyalty. When I talked to Jamie Royal while he was having a Club Sandwich for lunch, he summed it up well when he said,”It’s simple really it’s a friendly place where you get great food at a good value.” Wednesday mornings see the assemblage of the DP Club (Dedicated People), a group of about a dozen old friends that have been having Breakfast at Plums since it opened in 1999.
