Want to be a Reporter? Here's Your Chance!
66Dorsi: San Francisco Climate Change Examiner
I was recently hired by the Examiner Newspaper to be an online reporter on the subject of climate change. Up until this time I have been an active hubber here at HubPages (which I still plan to be) but I have to admit the prospect of actually reporting news about one of my favorite subjects at the Examiner is right up my alley. Being a community columnist for over 5 years with a local San Fransisco paper certainly helped my chances of being hired - but I really think my online writing here at HubPages is what ultimately sealed the deal .
So about my new job as the SF Climate Change Examiner and why you will want to read this if you are interested in working as a reporter too.....

Examiners Write About Their Subject of Expertise
I will be reporting about climate change, which is a subject I know alot about. Let's face it, there are those of us here that have those special subjects that are near and dear to our hearts. Climate Change is my "pet" subject that I have studied and researched for many years. Although I actually applied for a different position with the Examiner, I was hired to report instead on the subject of climate change after the Examiner reviewed my writing (I had originally applied for a position about writing on "green living")
So I should tell you a little bit about what the Examiner is doing. To date they have hired over 2,700 examiners and plan to hire over 12,000 by the end of this year. Examiners (reporters) report on subjects all the way from single parenting to gardening and sports reviews. Examiners are being hired all over the country for major metropolis cities. ( My city is San Francisco) Examiners can be anyone from the guy that delivers your mail but knows how to grow killer tomatoes to the checker at your local supermarket that has a wealth of knowledge on finance and home mortgages. What I am trying to say here is that you don't have to be working in your area of expertise full-time to write about it....and this is where I believe the Examiner is going to take online newspaper publishing by storm.
By hiring the best and brightest writers in their field of expertise, covering major metropolis's and tapping into the online news streams....well let's just say I think their concept is going the not only change hard copy news reporting but will create the new reporters of the future.
An Invitation to my Fellow Writers
After writing here at HubPages for over a year and meeting some of the best and brightest writers on the Internet, I'd like to extend an invitation to my fellow writers and fans to join me over at the Examiner reporting on the subject you love best. Do I get something out of this? Well in the sake of all honesty yes I will (Just think of me as a writer headhunter if you will..lol) In their quest to hire 10,000 more reporters, the Examiner is actually giving their reporters referral fees for referring other writers to fill positions. You do have to fill out a regular application, pass a background check and show your area of expertise (for me I just linked to some of my Hubpage articles on climate change) and once accepted, you will make a profile similar to the one here at Hubpages and you will have to write a very short bio (under 35 words) explaining why you are a credible person to write about the subject.
If this sounds interesting to you please contact me at dorsidiaz at gmail.com and let's get the ball rolling. I will send you a referral link where you can see what positions are available and you can also fill out an online application (or feel free to leave a comment here expressing your interest and I will contact you)
Happy writing to you!
(This hub is on NO way intended to influence and/or replace your activities here at HubPages. We all know how we feel about our great platform here! This is however another opportunity for you to make money doing what you love best- writing!)

Sweetie Pie: You are a good writer. I think you have a good shot at it. What category did you apply for?
Glad you shared with everyone. I hope you love your new job Dorsi and I wish you the best of luck.
Sent you an email. Hope to hear from you soon. Congratulations and thank you.
Thanks Gwendyom!
And Sir Dent, I just sent an email to you (thanks!)
Dorsi: I am a little nervous about it as my degree is not in Journalism however I would love to apply and see what may transpire, you are welcome to e-mail me. :)
I checked the application over. Not sure if I qualify because the closest ciuty to me isn't listed. In fact no WV cities are listed. Will check it out better tomorrow.
AE: I'll contact you with the application process. My major was not journalism either, it was a general ed degree majoring in commercial art. As long as you are a good writer you are a good candidate (and you are a good writer!)
Sir Dent: Perhaps find the closest city and apply for that one. There are examiners covering alot of things other than just local news.
LOL I have no degree unless Mining classes count :P
Sir Dent, you are so funny. I don't even think they asked about school (at least I don't remember!) I think the school of life works just fine for them...lol....
and hey, maybe you can be the mining expert over there!
I applied for the category of crafting tips as a suggestion. Thought that if they ever decided to adopt this category at least I have a chance.
This is a good idea. I write a regular garden column for our local weekly.
I guess they won't be covering Perth, Australia any time soon - its an interesting concept though - why the localization - why would climate change be any different in SF than NY or Perth for that matter?
Dorsi, I'm VERY interested and will be sending you an email shortly.
Good info Dorsi but I am not much interested in this field so it is not my cup of tea. However for those who are interested it is a good Hub/
I'd love this but I'm in the Uk so excluded. very well done though and thanks for sharing around.
Once again, I was accepted with them--but they still haven't given me any instructions. Very shady.
Congratulations! I am really not interested in the job, but like to read everything that is interesting. I am sure you will be successful in your new job. God bless.
Dorsi,
I was wondering since writing for this company said it was a contract position if people outside the US could not anyway. Maybe if someone is familar with a US city they can apply and write anyway. It is just a thought for those who live outside the US and want to take part in this opportunity.
looks the wave of the future. I heard the Denver post or a paper similar is closing down as it is not profitable. good hub !
Thank you all for dropping by. I've had several writers contact me- and it looks like we will have some hubber reporters pretty soon! And I'm sorry for those of you out of the US, I don't see that the Examiner has expanded outside the US yet, but they need too! There is a need. I'll make that comment to them.
Hmmm. Not a bad idea! Thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps organic gardening would be fun to report on!
Dorsi, this is great information. I just spent about a half-hour looking through my city's examiners' articles, and I'm fascinated. The site is full ofuseful local information, and nearly all the pieces I read were quite well-written. Plus, the whole concept of examiner.com is brilliant...looks like what I'd call local niche writing. You did a great service to Hubbers by writing this Hub. I'll be sure to email you if I decide to get involved. Oh, and congratulations on becoming an examiner!
I have written three articles so far there, here is my bio. Boy it's been great to get back in the swing of things regarding climate change but there is so much happening now it's hard to keep up with. This will be a great challenge for me.
Congratulations on publishing your first three articles. I checked them out, and the comments. The examiner.com reader base is a lot different from HP's, isn't it? Kudus to you for pioneering what can be a fantastic opportunity for Hubbers whose applications are accepted there.
I would definitely apply but being outside America I am not eligible for this!
Congratulations on this great opportunity though, Dorsi!
Congrats Drosi, I'm going to check you out!
Funny thing, I live in the SF area and know the Examiner as sfexaminer.com.
Are you working for a branch of the newspaper?
JoJo, I am the online examiner. The link is in my above comment. The video for what the Examiner is doing with their online presence is in the news clip above too.
Hey Dorsi,I saw your ad on Craigslist and it made me really interested in writing about Relationships. I'd love to receive the referral form so I can get started!
Dorsi: Congratulations! Had missed this hub. Wish you a lot of success!
I could be interested, as my area of expertise is worldwide.
But seeing as they don't want Aussies - too bad.
Cheers, Eric G.
Dorsi,
well, this is good information. I am interested. You can send the link through baruch@presidency.com
Thanks
Thanks. The application looks a little intimidating because I can't figure out my news area of expertise.

I just applied, but I am not sure they will even consider me. However, I put hubpages.com as the referral page because I saw your post in the forum before I read this. I wish you luck with your writing at the examiner.
