What is Bloodless Surgery

Have you ever thought of having Bloodless Surgery as an alternative option rather than have a blood transfusion ?

Rather than just having a blood transfusion why not be pro active with your choices and ask your doctor about checking out the alternative choices so you have the best health care possible.

What is Bloodless Surgery ?The Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut defines bloodless surgery as "...surgical and medical treatment without the administration of blood or blood-related products."

More people are now more proactive about their healthcare and are aware that they have choices about health care and expect medical professionals to respect their decisions.

It is used for a few reasons now as well as religious beliefs there are also social concerns about blood transfusions also legal, medical concerns and economic issues.

Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah's Witnesses were the first people to abstain from having blood transfusions obeying the scripture in Acts 15:20,29 which state to "abstain from blood".

Many people thought they were crazy until they too could see that Bloodless Surgery was a far better choice and the hospitals found Non Jehovah's Witnesses pretenending to be a Witness so they too could refuse a bolld transfusion.

Disadvantages to Blood Transfusions

Many people are worried about having a blood transfusion due to the fear of catching aids Aids or hepatitis .During the Korean War, nearly 22 percent of those who received plasma transfusions developed hepatitis & by the 1970's transfusion-related hepatitis deaths were approx 3,500 a year .

Others worry about diseases that haven't been proven to be transmitted through blood transfusions such as malaria, babesiosis, and Chagas' disease .

Transfusion errors are another concern & there are deaths every year through ABORh incompatibility.

Others are concerned about the lack of blood available for blood transfusions as well as the cost per person.

Advantages to Bloodless Surgery

Many hospitals have found that patients recover faster with fewer complications; several centers have reported that patients requiring inpatient procedures leave the hospital on average a full day earlier than patients who have had conventional transfusions.

There isn't the worry of having caught a disease from someone through a blood transfusion.

More care is taken to minimise the amount of blood taken from the patient . The invention of microanalyzers allows hospital laboratories to run blood tests on samples of blood that are 30–60% smaller than those previously collected, and to use the same blood sample for multiple tests.
