What is health?

Updated on January 24, 2014

Looking after You

Is health just feeling fine? Is health being able to do what you want to do without any restraints? Or is health merely the absence of disease?

Health is more than just the absence of disease. It is the ability of the body to adapt to different situations, whether that is a physical, emotional or chemical stress. Health is when we are able to express ourselves to our full potential without any hindrance.

Health is the state of optimum physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.

Your health is your greatest asset. Without your health all other areas of your life may also suffer the consequences.

Your health comes from within. If your body is not functioning properly it is unable to adapt to the situation which surrounds it.

If you have a cold is it because there is a shortage of cold and cough flu medication or is it because your body has been unable to adapt to its environment? Perhaps you have been unable to adapt to the colder weather, or the dry, dusty heat from the central heating.  Being unable to adapt you have become more susceptible to the environment, your body responds by coughing and sneezing to help expel these micro organisms, to help keep you healthy.

Health does not come in a bottle. Taking headache tablets to suppress a headache is not helping your body to recover, only suppressing the symptoms. Taking pain killers to get you through your back pain may minimise your pain, however it is likely to recur as the cause of the problem has not been addressed.

Only your body can do the healing. Holistic health looks at you the individual to help balance your body, if it is run down then a holistic health practitioner may be able to enhance your body’s own healing powers rather than suppressing it with drugs or removing parts with surgery.

Modern medicine does have a well earned place. Modern orthodox medicine is not preventative nor is it about keeping you well. It looks to the disease you present with to suppress it or to cut it out.

Your health is about keeping you healthy, to keep you well, keep you balanced and able to adapt to your surroundings.  Look to your health to help you find ways of enhancing your recuperative powers. Help your body to look after you.
