Samuel said to all Israel , “ I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you. Now you have a king as your leader. “

Israel have asked for a king. Why they were asking foe a king ? Because they have witnessed that their neighbors had kings and became mighty nations. They were not contented in having God as their king . Asking for their own king is somewhat seeking independence from the rulership of God. When the nation becomes independent from God, sinfulness starts to abound.

Even as a Christian, when we cease from dependence upon God for all the areas of our life even some of the areas, backsliding for us becomes easier. Israel started to covet and envy what other nations have, military prowess, economic prosperity, technological advancement. They become discontented with the things God provided for them.

When we start to envy the “people of the world” for what they have, we start to become discontent with our lives, with what God has provided for us do far. We tend to get out of the simplicity of life and work out ways toward gaining the “things” the people of the world have apart from God. Soon we seek independence from God and backsliding find its way in out life. Truly enviousness and covetousness are grievous sins. They are deadly sins that sting.
