Why is Soy Latte the Miracle Coffee Drink?

Coffee Beans

The Soy Latte

Recent research indicates that using soy milk in your latte beverage will supercharge your metabolism.

The Research:

A study conducted by the University of Illinois found that soy has a special protein; it is this protein that works with caffeine to increase the rate in which your body burns fat. It also boosts muscle mass and helps reduce overall fat storage.

How it Works:

The amino acid in soy increases the level of the hormone known as leptin. Leptin tells your brain when you feel satisfied.

Other Benefits From the Study:

The same research study found that soy also stops hunger by making the brain receptors think you are full.

Coffee is Coffee is Coffee...

Unfortunately, the supermarket brand of packaged ground coffee can be described, at best, as 'inferior' robusta. The only benefit may be a jolt of caffeine. To enjoy the known benefits of coffee it is important to have a freshly ground cup of coffee.

The beans should be arabica, the roast should be your choice depending on how much caffeine you like - and other personal preferences. If you stop at a coffee house where they grind the beans, most likely the beans will be arabica. (See links below about types of coffee beans and different roasts).

If purchasing your own coffee beans, it is best to go with organic beans which should be shade grown - this has always been the natural way to grow coffee. For mass produced commercial grade coffee - it is grown in the sun, and with the use of pesticides.

The French Press/Coffee Grinder:

I like the French press for making a cup of coffee as it cuts out using those coffee filters that are bleached. I always grind my own beans as well. This is pretty close to a really great cup of coffee - minus me growing and roasting the beans myself. Then a splash of soy milk. I also find doing coffee like this avoids the caffeine jitters and I feel no addiction.

For Boosting Metabolism:

The research study found results to occur with three soy lattes per week.

This is interesting - I've always known about the health benefits of soy - and heard about soy milk - never knew it could be used to lose weight! Shame I don't like the taste of soy milk in coffee!!!

Hmm! I wonder if the soy creamer would be just as beneficial - I often use it because I don't want to carry home a giant container of soy milk - and it's tasty! I even enjoy good coffee black which is how I think most of the world drinks it.

Seems the soy with the caffeine creates a certain result.

I'm convinced we use so much milk and sugar to cover up the horrid taste of the cheap commercial grade stuff we call coffee.

Thanks for writing SimeyC!

Great news as I only drink Soy Milk. I only wish soy milk was more readily available in restaurants and coffee shops here in France, but unless you are in Paris, you can not ask for a Soy latte :( That is one of the little things I miss about New York!

I'm definitely going back over to soy milk after reading this! I knew about health benefits but not about it boosting metabolism - thanks for such an interesting read BK :)

So true Princessa - about getting soy in every coffee shop here in NYC. Coffee shops have become really big in the last few years - they are all over my Brooklyn neighborhood. And lots of options!

You know Moonbun - I've only been using soy in my coffee because milk in America is filled with bovine growth hormones so it never comes in my home - so when I saw the research about soy and caffeine it caught my eye. Glad you like the article.

Thank you for writing creativeone! I appreciate your comments!

I've had to choose soy milk merely out of necessity (both my girls and I are lactose intolerant), and have always been pleased by its benefits. The fact that it helps stop hunger was very good news to me. Although I'm not a coffee drinker, I do appreciate the information concerning the best choice of coffee beans and how to get the most benefit from them. Thank you for all the research you put into this hub.

Very interesting indeed. Although I really like coffee, I had to stop drinking it (a well-known commercial brand) because of those caffeine jitters you mentioned, as well as insomnia. Now it's one cup of green tea a day (2 cups = 2 much caffeine). I'm sleeping very well now and no jitters. Maybe I'll look into the soy, french press, and ground beans. Thanks for this informative hub!

Hello PWalker281! I find grinding my beans and using a press - I have no jitters and no addiction either - I can have coffee a couple times a week and then forget about it. Maybe this will work for you. I know Hawaii has great coffee!

BK, This was great for me to read because for years was only drinking soy lattes until a few months ago I went back to organic milk - I'm going back to soy! Thanks for the info! Also, my coffee houses use freshly ground, fair traded, organic beans! Love your hubs! Kartika

Very interesting information here. This is great, I am going to try the suggestions on my coffee next time. I have try soy milk but don't really use it that much. But with the information you just provided, I am going to use it more and also pay attention to my coffee when I buy them. Thanks a bunch.

Hello Amanda Severn - You're one of the rare black coffee drinkers which is how I think most of the world drinks their coffee. I tried it and liked it. I find I like it too with the soy milk. Hope you like it too!

I think I will start as drinking Soy milk as well. It's always one of those things that you think you should start, but don't; the mantra of my life, haha!

All things in moderation TheSablirab! Hope you like it. I just like it in coffee or over oatmeal or such. I did buy a chocolate flavored soy milk to make great smoothies. I'd throw in one banana and then cherries or strawberrie or mixed berries - excellent!

Interesting to know about the soy milk. I think I tried that once. It tasted fine. I think my consern is the price. I am going to try that with my coffee sometimes. Thanks for the tips! I am trying so hard to tone my body. I need to do something different to see if I would lose weight. Thanks for your great hub!
